Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who's posted on this board for all the great tips and inspiration. This is the first time I've tried to do anything like this, and I have to say I'm pleased with the way it turned out.

I've seen this thread at least a hundred times, and each time I did I thought "I really need to do that!" I'm a huge tomahawk and knife fanatic, so after modding my own pair, I've gone ahead and registered here. Love all the different hawks and designs I've seen! Good to know I'm not the only person over-obsessed with sharp pointy things.

ANYWAY. Here's my customized Trail Hawk and Old Hickory Slicer knife. Both were given custom stains, custom engravings were done via my hand dremel (what a useful tool!), and the wrap is simply some craft leather and sinew. For now, I've only sanded the paint off on the hawk head; I like the rough, forged look by not cleaning it entirely of paint, so I've left it as is. I may at some later point decide to cold blue the head if I get tired of how it looks now, but we'll see.

Also got a couple of custom leather sheaths for the pair. Not too bad, nothing fancy (yet). The thing I like about them the most is that, despite all my modifications to them, they still function great as actual tools. Took em camping several times, had no issues.

You all will have to forgive the cheesy map underneath. It's the only "Weathered map" that I could find. Seemed to fit the theme, hehehe.

Ah damn. I was afraid that would happen. I tried linking the pics, but that's all I got. I hate that Bladeforums image attachment option is closed. I think if you right click on them you can copy the image URL. In the meantime, I'll see if I can fix the links by switching image site URLs.

EDIT: Fixed! Yay Picasa!

Spike hawk... Gave it to my nephew for Christmas

Sanded head to 600 then gave it a brushed look using green pad, cold blued, screwed up pewter inlay where screw hole was. Had my initials etched on other side of screw hole but pics don't show very well... Handle sanded down to 600, BLO with wax finish and blued metal caps, waxed leather wrap.

Has anyone acquired a CS Viking Axe yet? That big wide BARE steel blade is just begging for some runes and jelling knotwork:cool:

I don't have one, but a buddy of mine does and I'm going to help him do some norse runework modding soon. I'll see if he'll let me upload some pics!

On a separate note, I've been considering something for a while. As much as I love my old hickory and trail hawk, I've been looking for a while at those 2Hawks Longhunters and the Jeff White Longhunter knives.

What do you guys think? Think it's worth the money to get 'em? Are they enough of an upgrade to pay the money? They're so nice, I wouldn't want to mess with them like my TH and OH, but they come with a much higher quality already.

I have one of Jeff White's english trade knives. Very good quality. Good 1095 & well heat treated. Takes and holds a wicked edge.

Good to hear. I'm actually now veering more towards a Fort Turner Poled Iriquois. I saw you had a couple on a separate thread. What's your assessment?

Fort Turner is currently my favorite tomahawk maker. Very good quality and very affordable. American made. Very sharp! The bits are thin but not too thin; just right, and the resulting light weight makes them fast and agile in the hand. And despite the thinnish bits, they are plenty tough. Additionally Dana Turner forges these with a very subtle taper inside the eye; the result is the head tends to be very secure on the haft. I've never had one come loose.

Where is everyone getting the brass looking tacks they're putting on the ends of their handles? Couldn't find anything similar at the local craft store...
