Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

IMG_1375.jpg

There's some fun. Good job on that TH. As for that middle one, I dont recall who mass produces those but now and again you see them scuffed up and listed on the Bay as "indian tomahawk my grandaddy had in his shed!". :thumbdn:

It's a Norlund frontiersman tomahawk, supposedly they're a rare find and less than 1000 were made back in the 50's-70's. I'm not aware of anyone making them anymore, much less mass producing them. There are a bunch more pictures of it in a thread in the main axe, tomahawk, & hatchet forum.

Thanks Joe. . .it looked interesting; I like knives, tomahawks, etc. that have a rough forged look to them so it caught my eye right off the bat.

There has to en enough wood at the top so the axe head fits snug. Usually i take a rubber mallet and pound it a few times so it stays.

CS Rifleman's Hawk after a lot of grinding. Cold blued head, stained and varnished handle. I also inserted a brass tube in the lanyard hole and flared the ends to keep it there but it's hard to see in the photos.

Thanks! The full weight was just unwieldy. I ground 6 oz off of it and it makes a world of difference. The poll was 2.5 oz by itself. I think I'll try the pipe hawk next since the other CS hawks are on the small size.

ah, but that's the glory of the hawk my friend! if you want a chunky old weight get an axe, if you want a slick, light weight and packable littlepocket rocket get hawk! Go for the trail hawk ;)

WOW! I just found this thread.

I've got several frontier hawks I use for throwing. They've taken a beating, so they're perfect for me to try some of these techniques!

I've never modded any knife or hawk for that matter so this thread has been an amazing resource. Of course I ordered a few trail hawks today as well....:D

If anyone on here thinks I stole their idea you're probably Right:eek: Thank you for all the inspiration!

Wow! That's a beautiful hawk, are those copper nails in the handle? I just got my trail hawk today and started working on it straight away, I will probably steal a few things from your example. Thanks for sharing!!

Copper coated nails. I couldn't find solid copper.

Hey guys. Just received the pipe hawk I ordered and I was kinda excited at first. The handle/head fit was pretty good but as I started working on it I noticed the bit in relation to the eye/shaft was canted a little. It probably wouldn't affect it's chopping really but I'm still exchanging it. My trail hawk has a defect with the bit too but I didn't see it until I had already sanded the finish off. I had already sanded the handle but hopefully that river store will take it back. If not, oh well. It probably won't affect it's performance if I do wind up stuck with it.

I can live with having to sand the handle and do some work to them but this isn't something I can fix. Moral of the story: inspect the item before you modify it. That probably goes without saying for most but there's probably some out there that aren't aware of these potential issues.

none of them are perfect, they have forging imperfections, malformed angles and eyes etc.

theya re what they are, cheap and reasonabley priced tool s that make great thrashing toys and modding projects. Mine has inperfections on the top of the eye and although it did bother me at first, I couldn't care about it now I've worked on it and got it mucky! :)

Like I said, I don't expect perfection. Having to fit the handle, clean up the eye, and thin and sharpen the edge I'm totally ok with. But I do expect the bit to be straight enough to the handle that I can't see it just be casually checking it out. If the next one is as bad I'll just get a refund and invest in a nicer hawk from someone else.
