Here is my effort.
All work was done with hand tools and sandpaper.
The original head forging/casting was very badly done and I had to smooth and reshape the eye, as well as entirely reshaping the outside of the head, as everything was crooked and out of line, the heat treatment seems to be OK though.
It is not perfect, and does not compare with some other examples shown in this thread..
The edge guard is a stopgap until I make something better.
The haft has been covered with heat shrink tubing to re-inforce it as the grain is very badly aligned.
I will only make a new haft if and when this one breaks.
I hope to add some fancy cord covering to the haft as soon as I can locate some non-synthetic "small stuff", as I do not like working with the synthetics like paracord.

Love this thread, very cool mods. Inspired me to do my own. Did this one a couple weekends ago. Stripped the paint off the head, but I think the imperfections in the head are kinda cool,
so I left it alone(no sanding), and gun blued it. Stained the handle with black walnut stain, coating with varathane. Found some leather pieces at the local Michael's.
Sorry for the blurry cell phone pics.

Here's mine Cold Steel Norse Hawk. I wans't really feeling the viking vibe, so I cut the to off and now it has a wicked sharp hook. Simple yet deadly

What do you guys do to get those hearts cut in to the head? Just a dremel and a lot of time or is there some trick to it?

I would guess a drill and some small files as well. I have never had any good results with a dremel in getting a smoth line. Use a dremels to get the general shape and files to finish.

I have looked through *most* of the pages of this thread and see a ton of handles wrapped in 550 and a few people say they will spare the details of it because it has its own thread and tutorial, anyone have a link to wrapping the handle?

I have never seen a thread on BF about handle wrapping, i'm sure they're there.

Just go to this link: http://www.paracordist.com/

He also has a youtube channel, its where I go. But if you wanna find one in BF I can't help.

All I could find on his sight was pictures of the finished wraps no tutorial or how to unless I just missed it, but I found a plenty of tips on YouTube that I think will work, I just ordered a spike hawk and trail hawk from blade hq to try my hand at this stuff

I'm happy for you. It really is quite fun to mess around with these as you can see from the amount of posts on this thread.

I'm thinking of getting this hawk purely to mod...I've already done a rifle mans hawk...took a week!
I saw one trail hawk mod where the guy wrapped sinew in an x over the screw hole. Anyone else done that here? Anyone know a good place to buy the stuff? Thanks!

I agree. I've been using the bk16 for most of my basic bushcraft needs, and only really used the 15 for food prep. I tried the 15 on a couple day hikes, and decided im gonna use it, and a hawk, all season. So far, I'm loving the ergonomics and handling of the trailing point.

Here is my take on Norse Hawk.

Wow, this is beautiful work. I am working on modding my first pipe hawk and wanted to ask a few questions.

1 - how did you cut the heart shaped hole in the blade?

2 - I have been looking at ways to do etching into the blade and am planning on trying the dc power supply/vinegar and salt method. How did you do the designs on yours?

3 - How did you do the metal bands and the cross? That looks really good. Does it make it such that you can't take off the head?

Thanks for the info!

Mike,
That is exactly the patina I would like to get on mine and actually I did almost the same scroll work on mine. You say you dropped it into boiling white vinegar. How long did you leave it in and what did you do to it when you pulled it out? Thanks for the info!
