Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Wow! looks great guys!

I really want too try some etching soon.

dougelder -you did sand the head before the etching right? Or did you use a solvent to strip the eraea clean? I've always used sandpaper, but that is kind of a pain.

Right on, glad that worked out. It's interesting that you got such good results with those two long soaks. I've always thought you needed to agitate as it etches but clearly that isnt the case. Also I really liked how the bluing brought out the etch.

I stripped it with solvent and sanded to get rid of the "Hecho in Taiwann" print. Then, I prepared it to be etched. Stickers, spray paint, etc...

I need to take some better shots outside, but here are a few more iPhone pics a little further along the way:

Managed to complete a couple hawk mods. I cut the hammer end off a trailhawk, did a little file work, ground out some of the belly and sharpened a partial edge on the bottom. I bought a great looking hickory replacement axe handle and worked it into shape for the trailhawk. Cutting off the hammer end lightened it up quit a bit, feels very fast. It is still a great thrower.

On the second hawk I burned the haft and soaked in lemon oil for a couple days, then applied a few coats of wipe on poly. I got the idea for the haft work in this thread from Q!! I then got inspired by my Busse addiction and filed in some mean serrations. I also ground off some of the belly and sharpened the partial edge on the bottom. I rounded off the hammer end.

Both hawks got a couple coats of OD green and they were ready to fly!!

Those serrations look pretty cool!

Just wondering if there is a reson for them other than looking mean? ...More dammage or intimidation in a SD situation maybe? :)

Thanks!!

For me they are just for looks... But I think they might inflict more damage used as a fighting tool.

I almost hate to put mine among these. You guys have raised the bar. I can see I will have to get to work.

I sand blasted the head, smoothed all the rough edges. A couple treatments of Plum Brown. Buff lightly, and oil. The handle was sanded and rubbed down with Majic Maple. Added a little heat here and there and sanded back down. A couple coats of laquer. Add one jacket and a skirt from Goose-52 and here is where we are for now.

I like the look on the haft p moore, well done. That axe head sheath/jacket is pretty cool, too. Where did you get that?

Goose-52 here on the forums makes them. Excellent job in my opinion! Very beautiful work, and the belt loop/holster even comes with a handy snap on and off feature, so you can remove it without taking off your belt. :)

Also, he left enough room for your paracord wraped handle to still fit in the belt loop. Thanks again Goose.

I gave Thawk #1 to a friend who constructed a sheath for it. I think he did a terriffic job on it. Here it is...

No, I don't think so bro...PM commin' atcha.

Where have all the mods gone? Its been toooooooo long...I need my fix man! That's it, I need to buy another hawk to frankenmod (I'm still learning). When my wife sees it I'm just going to point at the last posting date and blame y'all!

Hah, I bought all the stuff for my trailhawk mod, but school started and its been kinda pushed off to the side until just now when my girlfriend decided that moding the trailhawk would be really really awesome.....I'm glad that she's turned into such a blade lover......so sexy!

Lot's of nice work posted here. Insipired me to mod a couple TH's.
Here they are- poll reforged to spike / edge profile flattened / handles thinned to feel - refinished.
I did a plain jane - park finish and a fancy- forced patina head with inlays on the handle.
Both handles had the production indents on the top and botton sanded out for a more handcrafted look.
I'm still working on a propane forge to beat out some completely homemades. With a limited amount of time available the open charcoal forge isn't working out for me.
take care
