Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

My 15 year old son decided that he wanted to try his hand at modding a hawk and here's what he made. He watched me make and etch one earlier and that's all of the guidance he needed. All that's left to do is sharpen the edge.

Not bad for paper, scissors, spray paint, etching solution and some elbow grease!

That's a cool looking Punisher skull! One of these days I gotta try some etching!

Just wondering, ...is your son into comics and comic art?
I dable in that stuff myself. :)

Man, I thought I could resist the lure of the spike hawk, but I was wrong. I need one of those.

Nice job guys.

He's not really into comics or comic art, but I suggested a skull and he thought that the Punisher logo was the coolest. I was impressed with his thought process and the organized manner in which he completed the project.

Now, I've got a stripped spike hawk and no clue what to create. The Watchmen smiley face was one idea, but now that would be too simple. I'll really have to step it up to top the boy.

outstanding... i joined this forums just to post to this.. this has forced me to stop looking at knives and persue tomahawks lol. what do you guys think is a good fist buy? cold steel? i have heard alot of good things about there hawks my brother has the Bad Axe and i think it was pretty good construction.. i also have one of their spartans and its pretty solid..

Personally, I'd go cheap for a first buy, if you're aiming to modify. Actually most other options I've seen I'm not sure I'd be able to improve on the look and design. So yeah cold steel. Ebay is your friend for that.

Been checking out all the awesome mods you guys have done on here and finally decided to show mine.. when I firt got my hawk i sanded down the head a bit and it almost had that "hand forged" look to it thanks to the black paint.. Unfortunately i have no pictures of that state and the pics im showing are after i let it bath in white vinegar papertowels for aprox. 48 hours, the towels started growing this nasty black stuff so i figured id take it off.. might need to try again as the vinegar made most of the paint peel off leaving un-patina'd steel open.
Anyway here it is

Wow that etching is cool. I figure that the topic of how to etch has been covered somewhere here. Could someone post of link of where I could find out how to do that. I do a lot of drawing and painting and would love to try out this.

Jack check out pages 25 and 26 of this thread for etching information.

This thread has 're-inspired' me to pull out my old Plumb hatchet to hawk mod and actually get down to finishing it!

Keep up the great work!

FINALLY my turn to humbly contribute to this AWESOME thread!

Mods made to mine are: deburred the eye, polished the hammer, sharpened the edge, sanded the haft smooth (220, 400), drilled a lanyard hole, fitted the head (no gaps, tight fit), finished the haft with light brown stain and boiled linseed oil, wet paracord wrap, and made a leather sheath.

There's some pretty amazing hawks in this thread; I hope we'll see even more!

Gods help me, here I go. I have a rifleman hawk that is probably a good 15 years old. Gonna have to mod it. ;)

Anyone know if I can use any CS replacement handle for my rifleman hawk or is it product specific?

As far as I know any CS replacement haft will work, however to achieve a good fit some hand work is necessary. You won't have any gaps if you true the eye first then hand fit the haft.

Oh, no. I guess I'm in for it too. After reading this thread from start to finish, I ordered two CS Trail Hawks and they came in today. I can't work on them for a couple of weeks because I'll be making Xmas presents, but once I'm done its on and I can't wait.

I got my trail hawk yesterday! All I've done to it so far is remove the paint, de-bur the eye, and sand the haft some. I deburred the eye and took the paint off with my dremel. I still have some hand sanding to do. And I've got to figure out what if anything I want to coat the head in. Oh and I got rid of the set screw, no point in keeping that.

Is there any sort of easily removable wrapping I can use on the haft? I want to have something on there for protection when throwing, but removable for when I go camping? I want to be able to easily take the head off when I go camping and try some of the things in the "versatility of a trail hawk" video.

I'll probably just buy an extra haft or two in case I break one throwing.

KG it seems like the standard paracord wrap up, placed up under the head, would do for temporary protection

I am wondering why you boil the head in vinegar, does it add any rust protection.

I was also wondering if anyone uses the hawks they mod or just mod them for fun , where are all the beatup nasty modified coldsteel hawks.

Not poking fun, just want to see some well used items.

Mine get used for sure!!

Putting the head in heated vineager forces a patina and helps fight corrosion. In addition it gives it sort of an old world look!
