Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

The sandwich was prosciutto and mozzarella with heirloom tomato and olive oil on ciabatta. Light toast on the bread. A little sea salt and cracked black pepper. Sort of like a bruschetta sandwich. Delicious.

Excellent. I'd like to see a pic of a sandwich like that ..... with an axe sticking out of it. Like the tomahawk was just chopped down on the sandwich as it lay on a board or chopping block or whatever. Maybe need a separate thread for hawk-sandwich combinations....

This thread is AWESOME!!!

Thanks for posting all the pic's and sharing all the info!!!

The etching thing is super sweet and WAY simpler than what I have seen in "Blade" magazine. . .

. . .inspired me to go to town on an old hatchet head from my Dad's toolbox rather than keep putting off making a tomahawk because I don't have a forge or anvil yet.

Thanks again and keep the pic's coming!!!

Not a Trailhawk, but it's what I have. . .gonna start mod'ing it by recontouring the bottom of the blade (I think. . .I really like the notch in the bottom of the blade, but if I recontour the bottom of the blade into a concave shape to get a more tomahawk-like shape the notch will be lost) and doing some file work on the top of the blade. . .

I just finished marking it up with a Sharpie and I decided to get rid of the notch and belly. . .

. . .just trying to decide if I should use my hand grinder to get rid of the material or wait until Monday and use the vertical bandsaw at work. . .have to use the Rockwell tester to see if the saw blade can handle it before I ruin a blade first though. . .

. . .then it will be time to go to town with a file.

What are sandwich pictures????

Missing a joke here???

Wait, I think I might know what you mean. . .one side view, top view (to show the file work), and opposite side view???

Yeah. . .I think I'm gonna chuck it up in the vise sometime tomorrow and hit it with the angle-grinder. . .

. . .if I can figure out what type of steel this is I will probably be throwing it in the heat treat oven at work to normalize and re-heat treat/temper it after I'm done with it.

Gotta start practicing the file work on some scrap steel. . .

It won't be that bad. . .I've already got it layed out, that's the hard part. . .removing metal won't be too bad. . .as long as I take my time and don't get over-exuberant I will be fine.

Sorry. . .I found this thread after it was already 72 pages long. . .so I skimmed through all the pages stopping to look at the pic's. . .missed the sandwich part. . .

. . .was gonna start work on my 'hawk today, but it took almost 9 hours to help a friend pull an engine (stupid EFI engines) so I didn't have any time and I'm dead exhausted now!

Maybe I'll start a separate thread today

I was actually thinking the same thing. Maybe "Hawks in the Kitchen" or "Cooking with Hawks". I have 25# of tomatoes to "chop" for sauce - perhaps some pics are in order. Who knows, maybe someone will get picked up on foodtv

I have a question about paint stripper(unrelated to this forum but i thought this was a good place to ask seeing all the mods done to the hawks), i stripped the paint off of a knife blade but it has woden scales i covered them with tape but some of the stripper could have gotten on the scales or under them. i washed the knife with alot of soapy water then doused in mineral oil. any idea how unsafe this knife is now? am i being paranoid? Just not sure just how dangerous the small amount that may have soaked into the wood could be?

It is indeed. We just got a shipment on base so Ive been trying to buy up as much as I can before it sales out. The stuff is delicious.
