Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

No amazing sandwich today like carrotstick, but I am processing 25# of Amish paste and san marzano tomatoes into sauce.

Sounds like fun, and that's a great pic. Careful with that Golden Monkey, in my experience it can sneak up on you.

No kidding - my buddy turned me on to it but 'forgot' to mention the 9.5% ABV. Went to Victory after a mountain bike ride and nearly fell out of the booth!!! I now have a healthy respect for the Monkey.

No sandwiches with mine!

Some of your hawks are so cool and so finely crafted mods, I would be scared to use them and would probably mount them on the wall... good job all.

My trail hawk

Simple, functional, used.

Here's my "Goldilocks" hawk. I got the trail hawk and it was just too small. Got the rifleman's hawk and it's a little too big. Since it's easier to take material off of a hawk than add more in, I introduced the rifleman's hawk to the bench grinder and the Dremel. I took the poll and the ridge at the top of the head off (see the stock photo for comparison).

The stock weight was about 37 oz and it now registers an even 29 oz on my postal scale. It feels 100% better than it did!

Finish is vinegar-soaked paper towels for a couple hours, then some light steel wool and then oil. I may play with the finish some more but it'll do for now. I did the handle in red oak stain and then boiled linseed oil.

I started a mod on an older c/s Frontier Hawk. I have polished the head and sanded the handle. I would like to etch the blade with something of the period. any suggestions

Foecutter are you asking about etching pattern ideas or the process itself?

Might click through some of the historical links that the hawk brothers have set up on other threads for ideas. Myself, I aim for Nordic designs but like the northwest coast people's work, too.

Thanks pullrich
I will look at other posts for pattern ideas. I am thinking of an old wold cross pattern. I will posts a picture as soon as I can figure out how to do that.

Working on my first mod. The handle came really terrible from CS. As you can see from the pictures, it's still biting on the sides and back and literally falls right off. Before I continue to sand, should I radius the top hole of the head so it conforms to the haft better or just keep working on the haft?

That is about as bad as mine looks. What did you end up doing?

With mine, fit the way it came from CS, it rattles with the screw in, and falls with the screw out. There is no way you can press fit it enough that it will bite and hold. If I flip the head over to the other side of the haft (not other end, other side), it bites nicely and sticks, although it isn't fit very well (can see light in a few places through it). Haven't done anything yet, researching here, and trying to figure out what I want to do. Oh, mine is a Pipe Hawk.

One of the things I did was fill in the loose area below the "bite" with wood glue (several layers), let it dry, then sand to get the head to fit. Plasti-dip will fill in the last tightness needs, once I can find a store with Plasti-dip :)

Thanks, BRL.
I ended up taking a dremel, rounding off the inside of the ... pommel? ... in the head, getting it nice and radiused, and actually expanding (flaring) it a bit, probably. Then took some 100 grit sandpaper to the haft and smoothing out the cuts near the top. Plopped the head back on, little tap on a piece of wood, and it's tighter'n... well, tight. ;) It'll work. All this was after I let it sit overnight in stripping solution to strip the paint off.

Haven't done much more. Don't know if I will. Well, other than sharpen it. I'll just let it take on a natural patina.
