Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

I get it now Bryfry just looked through all the past pages found you hawk on page 48 nice job that looks great. Sorry for the similarity

My CS Trail Hawk is finally here! The head is smaller than I expected which is good. This is going to be a pack piece so the smaller, the better.

No time to do much with it tonight but I did remove the set screw and tossed it.

Whoever assembled it must have been angry. The head was on tight! I have a lot of sanding to do to smooth it out.

You guys are right. I wouldn't have given this hawk a second glance in a store. It's plain looking and I couldn't cut myself on the edge if I tried. The edges on the top and bottom are more dangerous than the blade! Which I will be rounding off...

As I mod, I'll post pics. See ya soon!

No problem man! Alot of my mods were "inspired" from other peoples stuff, I always liked that Patriot hawk from the movie and that is what I based the hawk I did a while back on too. I think it's cool to see other people with similar tastes. :)

What did you use to carve/burn your haft with? ...I used a cheep wood burning/ soldering iron I got at a hobby store.

My name is Jack and I'm a tomaholic...

I'm trying to sort out why I can't post pics but in the mean time, I need your help. I'm at the point of etching my trail hawk blade. I've stripped the paint and rounded off all the sharp edges inside the eye. I'm in the process of masking out the etching pattern and will use a spray paint for my resist.

My question, is there a good homemade etching solution I can put together myself. All I'm looking for is a good contrast on my etch. I will probably finish with a patina (vinager soak). This will be a working hawk when I'm done so no fancy polish. (that's for my next one.)

I've searched the forum but it seems like different solutions for different metals. What would work the best for my hawk?

Thx,

Jack

You want circuit board etchant, typically bought at Radio Shack or online of course. I don't know anything about 'homemade' that will etch steel as well, unless you want to try to rig a saltwater/vinegar and battery contraption to give an electrochemical etch.

Posting pics. What I do is store my pics on Picasa. To get the pic in a post, I have the picture open (in Picasa) in a tab or window of my internet browser, and I open the pic's Properties window (right click) to show its address (URL). I copy (ctrl c) the address/URL. Then I start a reply to a thread in another window or tab, and when you're typing you see an Image icon above the words. I click that icon and follow directions to paste in the URL (ctrl v).

Thx Pullrich. That is exactly what I'm doing. I'm using Flickr. Maybe that's the problem. I'll try a different site tonight. See if that makes a difference.

Off to Radio Shack!

Figured out the photo problem.

Here's a couple of pics. I've stripped the head, rounded out all the edges and almost done sanding the handle. Much better fit.

I now have to decide on etching pattern for the head and get to work on the handle.

Finished sanding the handle last night. Used 100 to 150 to 320 grit. Nice and smooth.

Stained with a Honey Oak gel.

Now to seal with a Urathane finish tonight.

Next step: Etching!

Got a new trail hawk yesterday and wanted to take the head off and strip it. Removed the eye screw and tried to get the head off towards the bottom of the shaft, but all it does is bite into the wood and start to remove material. I could only go about a half inch down before curls started appearing. I stopped because it's taking off a lot of wood and taking a lot of effort.

Any suggestions?

Varg L you could try sanding down the haft immediately under the head. Or whittle with a knife a little in the worst spots.

Thanks pullrich. I ended up just using more hammer and pounding it until it came off. Totally wrecked the haft, looks-wise.

No matter. probably cover it will paracord or some wrap anyway.

Yeah, they are just cosmetic damages. Thanks for reminding me about pics. I totally forgotten about taking any.

I'll start taking some now and post the results when I'm done. I've got the head off and stripped. Next I'll probably start working on the haft. Sanding down some of the areas where the wood tore off.

damn u guys. I think I just picked up another bug... great looking axes!!!
