My new wilderness knife

Why? Seriously man, why? Go to Whine & Cheese or the Pirate's Cove for that kind of internet-commando nonsense.

You mistake a willingness to stand up for myself with a want to start something. I started this thread to show off a new knife I got and share with the forum. Somewhere along the line the handful of mouthy members here that always seem to have a problem with me because I like a knife that costs more than $10.00 start chiming in. I assume next I'll be accused of overcompensating for something or some other mindless internet slam... Much like Internet-Commando. You ask why... because I'm not gonna sit there and let someone make a smart remark and just let it sit. But I'll tell you what. I obviously don't fit in here with the 10% that take this stuff WAY too seriously. So I'll do ya a favor... I'll punch out of this thread. I'll look back in on it regularly to see if anyone is asking me something specifically so that I can reply... but I'll not lock up with anyone so long as no one locks up with me. I see a Internet-Commando comment or something like that... I'm back in baby. But if everyone else wishes this would just go away... then by all means let us let it go away.

Of course he is, I've been saying that since the first thread. I've got him on block so can't say much specifically, but do not feed the troll, people!!!

225px-DoNotFeedTroll.svg.png

See... now there is a guy that knows how to roll. he doesn't like me. I could care less but he has placed me on ignore and so i don't hear from him. If you don't like what I'm saying... ignore me. I've not found this level of hurt feelings in any other board on this forum. And I'm the same guy everywhere I go... so is it me? Maybe. But who cares right? Every other board I go to... smooth sailin all the way. We joke, we laugh, we share knife porn... we have a good time. Let's try not to take ourselves so seriously guys. This is the internet. And in the end it means nothing.

While we are on the subject:

Does anyone have any trouble with the INFI steel throwing sparks off of a firesteel??

I have a BAD and a Game Warden and I'm not sure what it is but I can only get minimal sparks from a firesteel with either. Are the spines beveled?
The spines usually are slightly beveled. You could easily square off a section for using a firesteel.

I just read throught this whole thread and honestly I dont understand why SJ doesnt get a more fair shake. Is there something I missed? Hes a dude on a dang internet forum dedicated to knives and us dorks that actually care which one we have:D. Hes on here sharing pics with us and just chatting about a comon interest, wheres the demonry in that.

People I know that were in actually SURVIVAL situations couldnt have given two tiny s**ts what kind of knife they had and whether it was thick, thin, busse, mora....whatever. They were just happy to have had a knife in a situation gone to s**t.

This is an internet forum dedicated to talking about a hobby. Lighten up for christs sake:D

Having said that I love this place for the comradrey (sp.) and having likeminded individuals to bouce ideas off of and share my experiences with. We all have differences and similaritys of opinions over a plethera of interesting and varying topics. I like to hear ways of doing things that are different to mine because it gives me the opportunity to compare how Im doing something against a way that might be more effecient, more comfortable, or just plain more funner! Why do we have useless preposterous arguments ONLINE .

For the record Im a thin edge fan myself,) but I have a kabar and a couple beckers and a couple hundred other blades that sit in bins and drawers, cause Im a knife dork just like you all.) But that dont mean SJ is an idiot because he likes a big thick Busse knive. That knife was awesome and you all know it. Why is the guy getting degraded.

Like I said, maybe I missed something but geeze! At the end of the day why get bent out of shape over anything that happens online, who really gives a hoot:D

Rant off. (and running for my life....!:D:D)

Warning! Meta-discussion contents:

Well, comments like "Is it a bushcraft knife for carving ducks and pipes... no... but a knife for field use and survival..." can be read like "small knives = carving ducks in the woods", and I suppose that makes people pissy.

Lets put it this way... I use a 4" blade. I can say it, post a pic, and explain why I dont like swords in the woods. Or I could say:

"Is it a knife I can cut open a car roof with, or dig a trench with, or that looks good when Im running around half-naked while rescuing MIAs in Vietnam? No, but its a time-tested solid cutting tool that does everything its supposed to when Im hiking, hunting, fishing, or spending nights in the woods."

I personally think that Busse SJ bought looks great. It would not be my choice for the woods, but if those Busses were any cheaper, Id propably still buy one at some point. But, this is a knife forum, and funny as it might be, calling a certain type of blade "duck carver" is an Insult, and will put people on defensive position :p

Thats just the way it is, and thats the way we all like it, no? :D

That sums it up about about as well as anything could. I am sure if you posted the above comment in regards to a Mora in the Busse subforum you would annoy a lot of people there. There is a level of respect involved and this is a very respectful forum...I like it that way personally.

Well I gave you guys the chance not to talk about me and let this thing die... and of course you can't... cause you welcome conflict. So let me chime in again. I never said that a thin bladed knife was only good for carving Ducks. Just that fine carving chores seems to be what has been pointed out to me as the key function of a bushcraft knife over other knives. In that... that's what it does BETTER than other knives with thicker edge geometry. And I haven't questioned that. My point has always been... that I do not find fine carving chores to be of use. And that a thicker knife will do what limited , albeit brutish, carving I need done, ie... notching wood, and making shavings, and spliting, and all that good stuff. I use the reference of a duck or pipe... becuase those are some of the videos I've seen to illustrate just how good at carving a true bushcraft knife can be. Of course that's not the point but it's a demonstration of what one can do with a little practice with just a knife. But as I've said over and over and over again... those fine carving chores are not important to me... I don't need to be able to make a pipe... and I don't need to be able to carve that finely with a knife. I require a more sturdy knife and so I give up the delicate work nature of a bushcraft knife that would allow me to do such intricate cutting. But for my needs I don't need a knife like that. And both of our choices are useful to us. You like to have a thin blade so you can do carving and such. But put to great stress yours will snap and fail long before mine. That being said... you probably don't beat on your knives like I do. I like having a knife that can be beaten like a dog... and for that... I give up a little on the fine carving end. It's ok. The fact that you take it as an insult shows that you take this stuff WAY WAY WAY too seriously. To be insulted, means to be offended, and in turn made angry. If anything on a damn internet web site gets your feathers ruffled to that degree... You need to take a chill pill. Cause at the end of the day I could care less about what's said in here. And no one has offended me or hurt my feelings or insulted me. Cause it doesn't matter. Use what you like... I don't care. But I'm gonna have my opinion too. And I don't really care what you think about it.

This isn't a Mora forum. It's a wilderness and survival forum. It's non brand specific. You can't say that slaming a Mora here is taboo.

Dunno if this was pointed to me specifically, or in general... I tried to write my post "tongue in cheek", or how do you guys say it, so, no need for a chill pill here :D

Anyway, my point simply was, that some of your comments can, and obviously have been, interpreted like I stated. You can either accept that as a fact, and be more polite in the future, or keep getting angry replies. Its really as simple as that.

I think it is kinda funny that you like a big ole he man knife that you beat like a dog and can't understand why we like little girly knives used to carve dolls. And yet you carry and defend a wee little pistol that would go better in a girls garter than in the woods. Seems like you would advocate a big he man 44 or something. ;) :D

Maybe some people have the same views on knives that you have on guns. Chris

Just when I thought my headache couldn't get any worse:(

No one is budging and nothing is going to get accomplished in this petty bickering. Steel Junky showed us his new wilderness knife and we all gave our oppinions of it. So the thread IMO is done, now let it die.

Great!!

Yeah there's not that much more that hasn't been already said regarding all this ...
There will be arguments FOREVER touting large vs small or thick vs thin which is better yada yada yada
A far more useful thread would be seeing this new wilderness knife being actually tested outdoors IMO.
THAT would certainly be of interest to me.

A thin blade can be used hard too. :)

Heres one that is.... OMG, 1/8in 1095, convex!!!!

I was instructed by the maker to break it, and well, I tried. I even shot the edge with my .45. So, Im not gonna preach thick vs. thin. Im gonna let the pics do that for me, and show that its all in your preferance.

Not tryin to stir the pot, or get confrontational, I just thought this was relevant.

Testing included pounding it through a truck hood with a hammer, shooting it, pounding it into a seasoned log of oak, and then beating it out of the side with a hammer, etc..etc.. after alot of tests the edge as still sharp enough to cut a seatbelt several times. Its all in the heat treat boys. :)

Way to go jake!!

Here is a 1/8th thick Koyote.

This is a big hard piece of Oak with a nasty knot that other thicker knives would not baton through and got wedged! This Koyote actually went through and flexed around the knott splittung the wood. A good thin knife can be abused and heavily used just as well as a thicker knife IMO!

In regards to edges; I find a thin edge to cut wood much better than a thick edge. A thin edge requires less force behind it to part the wood fibres IMO

This does not mean a thick knife can not have a good thin edge.

Here is a 1/4" NWA knife with one of the best thin edges I have ever seen. A 1/4" at spine tapering down to a near zero! It cuts outstanding.
