Need opinions for a cruise knife!

I would look past the unnecessary demand for a locking blade and just get a Victorinox recruit.

Honestly, when on a cruise are you going to have to cut something where a locking blade will come into play ?

nd something fairly inexpensive incase theft, loss or whatever.

but thinking maybe time to try a salt series!

Budget let’s say 100.00 or so if lost or whatever it wouldn’t hirt to awful bad!

Well, the most of the Salt series certainly fits in your budget. That said, losing a ~$70 knife, might still hurt.

For as short term as a cruise is, I think you'd REALLY have to try to screw up something like a Byrd Meadowlark.
Cheap- roughly $20
Handle material- FRN- salt water won't hurt it at all.
Steel- 8cr13mov, not going to win awards, but certainly serviceable and more that stainless enough to survive years on a cruise ship, never mind a week or two.
Size- nice carry size. Roughly that of a Delica.

Alternately, I'd go with an AUS8 Rat2, for pretty much all the same reasons.

Seriously, there aren't really many needs at all for a knife on a cruise. In fact, I was even thinking about knives like a CQC6 so you'd at least have the wave feature to use as a bottle opener since that would likely get much more use than a blade, and even then, I think they did away with glass bottles on the boats years ago...

Basically, getting yourself a "cruise knife" is a relatively frivolous endeavor, that said I've never been above frivolity.:) Have fun.

It would be a great excuse to test the stainless capability of the salt but you may want to also carry a cadet. Hard to open foreign beer bottles with a Spydie hole and my teeth are not what they used to be.....

I usually carry two knives when I go on a cruise - a Victorinox Tourist (or any of my SAKs that have a corkscrew) and a little throwaway locking knife - an Ozark Trail "Wood Handle Clip Knife 554122431" that I paid $4 for. Believe it or not, it's usable, takes a decent edge and if I lose it, no worries! It's light and carries well.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT GETTING OFF THE SHIP WITH A KNIFE! (sorry to yell, but it's important)
Just because it's legal on the ship DOES NOT make it legal in port!! And laws change - I usually leave my knives in my cabin on the ship. KNOW THE LAWS in the COUNTRY and PORTS before taking a chance of going to jail or prison in a foreign country! In the Virgin Islands, for example, carrying a "dangerous knife" can get you five years in prison! And the definition of a "dangerous knife" is somewhat open to interpretation...

I can't imagine how much you are going to use a knife on a cruise like that, even off the boat.

I would think, at most, pretty mundane stuff, opening beers and snacks, cutting the price tag off a new hat, etc.

How about one of the locking Vic SAKs?

I don't see your trip turning into a "shipwrecked and lost on a desert island" scenario.

Have fun!
You never seem to understand.

I would be bringing my endura.

I'm gonna say Steel Will Cutjack in D2, just wipe it down, post before and after pics so everybody knows how much the blade with rust/patina.

Don't understand what? Do you disagree that the main applications for a knife on a Carnival cruise are going to be typical EDC stuff? Mostly mundane? No doubt less demanding than the ones involved in going to work or puttering around the house on a weekend?

Is he going to be opening boxes on the cruise? Cutting a fan belt?

Not really.

So a SAK would be perfect for those little things. Heck, a Classic would probably suffice. Not fun, but would suffice.

Let me start off by saying I respect your input in every thread you post in. I feel your knowledge adds a lot to this forum.
I feel at times you don’t understand people’s attachments to certain styles of knives. I respect your opinion but your right answer isnt always the right answer.

When I went on a cruise a few years back, I took a folding waiter's knife with a cork screw, bottle opener and knife blade.
It was a real hit poolside and they're very cheap.
And because you do go through customs when you enter a foreign port, I left it in my cabin.

When i have gone on cruises, i have always just carried my regular edc knife. After all, it will be just like any other vacation except you are on water for a lot of the time. On my alaskan and mexican cruises, there were a lot of days on shore and my regular edc came in handy just as it would at home. Just make sure you are in compliance with any local laws. I am surprised to see posts on a knife forum saying you won't need a knife.

Don’t need it for a few months, the confiscation possibilities are why I didn’t want something expensive like an xm18. Hence the budget friendly ni hi end choices.

That’s kind of what I thought. A lot of why need a knife for that questions. On a forum about knives! Im not a fan of small ish slip joint and i get essentially made fun for saying im gonna be in survivor mode!

Definitely the local laws are something to check, or your cruise could be ruined, entirely. I'd be a little concerned about it, so I would go small. I'd go Spyderco Salt without a doubt, either Ladybug Hawkbill, Manbug or Dragonfly.

Those r my choices so far, I respect everyone’s opinions on intimidation factors but as long as it’s legal I don’t really care About the friendly looking factor not to be rude just not my concern.

I'd pick something on the smallish side to edc since you'll be in shorts and light clothing most of the time.

The Native5 in forest green G10 and S90V would be my choice. It's now $140 at KnifeCenter.
