I typically carry a folder that has a blade length between 3 and 4 inches, more commonly between 3.5 and 4".
It would be better to ask what I don't use my knife for. At home I use it for everything from packages, home improvement projects, to kitchen work. Outside the home I use it for cutting paper, cardboard, wood, food, packages, you name it. I've even had to use one to clear a trail to get to a sampling location. None of this even includes the constant poor lost soul I encounter nearly every week who needs a knife to cut something or open something and doesn't carry one themselves. If I'm going to be doing a lot of outdoor work I'll typically be wearing a fixed blade as well, usually 5.5 inches in blade length or less, because they're stronger than a folder. I could say my knife would be pressed into service as a defensive tool if I ever needed it, but I'm just as likely to use a chair, bottle, antennae, stick, trashcan lid, coffee cup, rolled up magazine or whatever else is handy if I get into a bad situation. So far, then only bad situations I haven't been able to extricate myself from involved a dog. I've been able to use my wits, bluffing, a firearm once, and cautious retreats to avoid physical violence with people the few times it's ever come up in my life.
I think I started carrying a pocket knives sometime around 10 or 11 years old. I started carrying a fixed blade for outdoor work at age 13. Gasp!!!
I even regularly carried my pocket knife to school!!!! Of course, that was before America went crazy with paranoia about "weapons", so most boys where I grew up carried a pocket knife for sharpening up pencils, cutting paper or cardboard, or peeling their apple for lunch. I'm not that old either (38).
Hope this helps, whatever the problem.
