New GEC #13 Congress series (Clerk, Speaker Jack and Whip)

That's a sweet one, Scott!
Reality is starting to set in now that I know just how small this run was. But in the end as long as I end up with a stag clerk I'll be content.
The rust red jigged whittler turned out stunning though.

Just ordered a whittler in micarta. Didn't really expect to get my hands on one. There was an amazing one on the site I ordered from, but it was gone already. Whoever got that one is a lucky guy, my respect. I would much preffer one of the jigged bone whittlers, but the site didn't have any (are they even out already?). :grumpy: I've never had a knife with micaarta scales, I'm a big sucker for bone. Hopefully I'll like it. Now the terrible waiting, will probably last some 3 weeks or a bit more till I can hold it in person, with the customs and everything ...

I too just ordered a whittler in micarta. I'm looking forward to the Whip but that still looks to be a ways out.

Jig Bone have not been shipped from the factory yet....

So my whittler is on its way! Is there an advantage to having two of the same blade? I'm thinking I'll likely turn one of the pens into a mini clip...

I went back to the site where I ordered mine and they show out-of-stock already. That was quick! Sure glad I snagged one.

Discuss the knives. Not the ordering process.

The Whittlers look great, but I don't know that I'll be getting one. I did order a Speaker Jack in jigged bone, although I'll agree with (and paraphrase) what someone said in the "Let's Talk GEC" thread: after seeing the centered shield on the Whittlers, the offset shield on the Speaker Jack does look a bit odd. I'm curious to see if I feel the same about it when I see it in person.

I really hope I get one. I was out of the whole knife game for a while, but I feel like I got an email in quick with interest in this one. The Muslin Micarta looks amazing.

GEC's website shows a really nice Northfield Blackwood version with Gimp shield which I think would look just right on the Clerk, this one is an SFO.

Obviously, they're not doing the Rat-Tails but the other Northwoods will be interesting to see. Back to another controversy of some age, those Stag ones deserve a shield, pity GEC flunk that nowadays..:(

This frame offers a lot of options though, enthusiasts of this rather rare style are going to be well pleased, I'm looking forward to the Wharncliffe versions as I think a long blade is what is wanted in this frame. The Whittler's Sheepfoot seems a bit short and it appears high riding, which I would've thought compromises hand comfort? Something essential in a Whittler. But like I say, this frame accommodates much, tastes included

Thanks, Will

I was wondering the same thing and the only advantage I can think of for haveing 2 small pen blades is you basically have a half whittler with a back up pen when the other gets dull. I don't know this to be true it's just a thought. One from someone with very little experience in traditional knives as well lol. :)

I'm also a bit concerned about the comfort of the high-riding sheepsfoot. But, I can imagine its length being an advantage if that allows the index finger to remain clear of it and grip securely around the frame.

I'm curious to hear initial impressions of comfort when using the secondaries from the folks who have handled the whittler.

Themail half whittler by GEC has the same blade combo and on one of my favorite frames. My personal issues with it was how tall the wharncliffe blade sat when closed and it was uncomfortable to me to use the pen for anything more than cutting the tape on a box or opening a letter. I pretty much just used the main blade only so I traded it away.

On the 79 3 spring whittler, the gap from the spear blade to the end of the frame allows for your finger to rest against the frame and makes for a comfortable hard use knife.

Everyone's hands and grip are a little different so it will be hard to say if the shorterror sheepsfoot main will feel good or not. This is why I am excited for the clerk. With the low laying wharncliffe on the Congress frame their will be no interference issues hopefully and it should be comfortable to use in any grip.

Jeff that mircarta 79 is really nice . I'm quite fond of my ebony workhorse
I think the red bone whittler might be the cream of this run . The blackwood is right there too.

I'm merely curious if the Muslin micarta is essentially the same as Bone micarta that was used on some 77s a bit ago? Same stuff, but a different name?

Interesting thing about that 79 canvas micarta is they were able to polish them fully. That is, they didn't need to leave a satin finish on the bolsters. They did the same (full polish) with a short run of 54 or 53 (one or the other) cigar patterns a few years ago. I wonder what changed from then to now to necessite leaving the canvas with a rougher finish. Just making an observation. I like both versions.

Looks the same to me...

I think having to take all the extra time cleaning up compound on those older runs brought them to that decision. If the micarta is heavy on epoxy, it buffs much better than a batch that has more canvas surface area.
