New GEC #48 with Wharncliffe blade?

I own a #48 slimline, and can't help but think slimline for some reason, when I see #48, and assumed, that's what this thread was about a #48 with a single Wharncliffe blade. Not the case, but owe well. Wharnies, are just so easy to sharpen freehand, and would be at home on a typical trapper. Having a blade the could be sharpened a bit easier would be nice to have in the field along side your clip point.

Blackwood ordered.

I have been wanting a Wharncliffe Trapper for the longest time, but I didn't want the Case model with Tru Sharp Steel.

Looking forward to it coming some of these days.

Got my smooth white bone today. snapped a few quick pics. My initial impression is that this is a new favorite, the blades are perfectly centered good fit and finish except a little gap where the scale meets the bolster on the mark side. not a big deal, I got more than I payed for in my opinion. The wharnecliffe is pinchable as well. The pull is about a 5 which I like. All said and done, I think GEC knocked this one out of the park..... The bone is very "alive".

Looks great Eric!! Mine came in today as well and I'm REALLY happy with them!! I can't decide if I should put one in my pocket now or wait for the Northfields and Charlie's #48 jacks to come in. I know I'll be using a bone and wood, possible a stag, but want them all in hand before I can decide. Although, the mottled bocote one has been calling to me...

how does the knife feel in hand when the clip blade is open? I mean does the wharncliffe feel like it rides very high in closed position? I am thinking of my BF2012 knife, which is a great knife, but the wharncliffe sticks out so far that it is a bit annoying.

@roninelh that's some nice looking bone, make sure to keep a lot of oil in the little gap between the scale and liner - I've learnt from my #92 with a similar problem that that is where rust breeds.

I didn't think to take any pics and the light is going... I can take some pics tomorrow if nobody else has some at hand. The wharncliffe is not as noticeable as on the #74 or even #53. I'd have to use it a bit but the narrower handle and blade don't seem as noticeable when using the clip.

This x2! This is why I bought this knife and why I'm interested in the Jack as well

Man, I like that bocote Tidioute! If I didn't go for the NF autumn gold bone I'd be all over the bocote, such nice looking handles.

The hard part now is waiting :D

I tried to get some quick pics in. This is the only shot of the clips open that wasn't blurry and the least blurry shot of the wharnies out :o Top to bottom, GEC #53 Furtaker trapper, #48 Improved Trapper, #74 2012 Forum knife, Reese Bose Wharncliffe Trapper to approximate the 2013 Case/Bose collaboration, Case Mini Wharncliffe Trapper.

Trand, I appreciate the comparison photos. Thanks for taking the time to help us all out

That mottled bocote is very nice, great score.

Awesome comparison shot, thanks for that! I don't suppose you'd be able to take a top down photo (picture of the blade spines) to compare the width of the #48 to the width of the #74 2012 forum knife?
Hope I'm not asking too much :)

Thanks guys. Jsd, I lost the light so no more pics but its close enough that the pics wouldn't really help. The scale-blade-scale-blade-scale section of both knives are of equal thickness. The forum knife is slightly thicker, or feels slightly thicker but I believe this is mostly due to it being bareheaded instead of having an end cap like on the #48. With the end cap, the covers taper down to be smooth with the cap. On the forum knife, it is straight to the butt.

Thanks for the tip on oiling that spot, I hadn't even thought about it.

I have only used it a little bit today, but for my use (which isn't very heavy) it have been very comfortable. Using the wharncliffe is a dream and the handle is thin enough as Trand pointed out that using the clip blade is comfortable. The deeper cut swedges on the northfield version might make it a little uncomfortable, but I haven't handled one yet. The handle width is a little wider than a 73 even with the wharncliffe sticking out. The little sway in the frame helps make it ergonomic as well. Seems to be a very slim/easy to use knife whichever blade you use. Just the first impressions of a man who is a little tickled at the moment though...... i'll carry and use it for a couple weeks and judge from that point.

These don't have quite the bling of the Northfields, but this is a perfect pocket knife. I like this knife immensely. Perfect size; this is what I was hoping the 2012 BF knife would have been. I'll probably have to get another, but I've got to tell you, this smooth ivory bone GEC has been using lately is hard to beat for looks.

Comparing this knife with the Case wharncliffe mini trapper, the wharncliffe here sticks out more and you can feel it more so than on the Case but that's because this is a more classic Wharncliffe shape than what Case uses. The Case also pairs a modified clip with the wharncliffe so that you can get to the nail nick. The GEC version having a higher spine on the wharncliffe does not need as narrow a clip as Case uses.
