New Run of No. 15s (Beer Scout and Otherwise)

I'm wondering how the golden ale jigged bone will look when it's finished up. Looking forward to seeing more photos.

So, if this picture is from the beginning of production and only pertains to the Beer Scouts (it's only on the Beer Scout page), that would mean that GEC is pumping out 350pcs in EACH handle material (1400pcs total). Or is that only the middle liner, and they are producing 700pcs in each handle material? Even if including the Scout knives, that would mean 350pcs of each handle material for both lines.

Outside of the Forum Knife (which I recall reading was 350pcs + 150pcs for the HJ10) has GEC ever done a run that large of single handle materials? Ever done a 1400/2800pcs run? I'm very glad to see production further ramp up on popular models; hopefully, it's a model that continues moving forward.

I hope quality doesn't slip. My crown lifter came with a very noticeable but minor flaw.

Shawn, that is a good question. I do think the three liners in each Beer Scout are identical so perhaps we should divide the 2,800 by three.

I'm liking the maroon

Newbie and saw this pic of the knife I just got preorder email for Nov 14th (1st Traditional buy) and I went from Eh to can't wait for next week.

AusLoX, you must work there to get these pictures or live close by?

Noah, The photos are from GEC's website. They post WIP (work in progress) photos under the "What's Happening" heading. They also have a production schedule (about a month at a time)--worth checking out. You picked a nice first traditional knife.

Thanks for putting it nicely, duh feel like a newbie.....Very neat site with great pictures. I tried to get into traditionals for years when I lived in Florida. At every gunshow there were 2-3 collectors with 2-3 folding tables showing their collection and new knives for sale. I had no money for nice knives, and hadn't seen a #15 Beer Scout until about a month ago and it just clicked. Now I have disposable income and still like nice knives and beer, viola!

Ordered with a leather clip case, how I carry my small fixed knives and been researching the steel, sharpening, maintaining, patinas, making lanyards etc....

Hey guys! I've been lurking around BF, on and off, for quite a while now, but I've just recently gotten interested in traditional folders. I picked up a GEC Beagle last week, and I love it. But now I'm on the hunt for something a little larger for my EDC, and the beer scout seems like a great choice. I'm having a hard time deciding between the maroon micarta and the golden ale jigged bone.

In my uninformed mind the micarta seems like it might be less fragile, so that might lend itself well to an edc role. But I'm a big fidgeter, so the jigged bone is appealing for tactile reasons. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Go for the jigged bone. GEC doesnt jig their bone very well compared to other companies, but you will still find their jigging nice and tactile compared to the smooth finish.

The other option is the wood. I would go for this over the micarta. No one is quite sure what to expect but we have our fingers crossed hopefully it will look nice.

Jigged bone is a very traditional handle material and it can last a very long time (I've seen knives over 100 years old in excellent condition) but drop it and it may crack. Micarta is pretty wear resistant but I somehow managed to get a small gouge in the covers of one of my knives so it's not impervious to damage.

Thanks for the quick replies! I was already leaning towards the bone, so thanks for giving me a nudge. My only hangup with the beer scout is the bail... I don't plan on attaching a lanyard, so I just picture it getting in the way more than it being useful. Is there an easy way to remove it, and if so, is there an actual tube running all the way through the body in case I change my mind and decide to attach a lanyard without the bail?

The bail is easy to remove. Have you taken a look at the Crown Lifters that were just released? Basically a Beer Scout without the bail, available in OD Micarta, Antique Yellow jigged bone, Ebony and Nifebrite acrylic.

Here are my Ebony and Antique Yellow:

This just came in today. I like it more than I imagined. The acrylic is actually what sold me on this run.
