not happy with this transaction

Tried, convicted and executed in 'The Court of Public Opinion' because of one complaint and a response no one seemed to like.......

When being tried by a jury of your peers, it's best not to call them sheep.

Tried, convicted and executed in 'The Court of Public Opinion' because of one complaint and a response no one seemed to like.......

A NUMBER of responses, Dudley:

You have the knife so i dont understand your problem. Im not going to hold a customers hand untill they receive the knife, they go out as soon as i can

You have your knife and had to wait 15 days for it ,to me thats not a big deal.

Two weeks is not a big deal.I am not going to email everyone ,every day and keep them updated on there knife,i dont have the time......As for the others on the band wagon who are upset about me taking two weeks to send a knife out, thats fine that im on your ignore list.I dont want to deal with your attitude anyway.

So your all complaining about how disrespectful i am to customers but all but this one guy are happy.Your just sheep to me.

This is pretty funny, you guys act like i owe you all an apology because you buy knives from other makers......and your pissing and moaning about my communication skills. Its just stupid.Im done here, enjoy your sewing circle ladies.

This isn't a response, it is a pattern of dismissiveness and disregard in a tidy package for all consideration. As my business partner always says in relation to time "how would you like to hang by your thumbs for 15 days?"

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Looks like you got much more than a knife, lee brooks. Sure hope you got your 'money's worth' now since you've pushed this thing to the very end.....make you feel better?

It wasn't Lee that got mstephen tried, convicted and executed. It was mstephen himself. He obviously felt that everything he did in his deal with Lee was acceptable, so he owed nobody an apology. It was also apparent that he wasn't going to take the hit to his reputation lying down, so he decided to become defensive and insulting.

It is very clear that mstephen is not good at problem solving. It was his attitude that got him in this mess. If he had handled things in a different manner, everything would have turned out great. He would have bolstered his reputation instead of having it take an immense hit. He has no one but himself to blame for the direction this thread has taken.

Many people feel that events like this are one of the biggest problems that internet forums have. Trial by internet. I personally find threads like this to be very enlightening. They give me a look into other people's ability to handle unpleasant situations. In this case, mstephen failed miserably.

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity. In a way, that's true.In another way it's not.I've never even heard of mstephen until this thread.I checked out his stuff. It appears well made & is fairly priced. If it weren't for his callous statements & his blatent disrespect to his client & everyone else in this thread,I'd probably buy a knife or two from him.Not so much now.

This forum is not a Court of Public Opinion. It's an arena. Some combatants come poorly equipped for the contest.

I suggest that is because you and others like you make it a hobby to seek out these "events" and jump on....
Don't you all think that you've all made your point by now, and time to move on?

You've tried, convicted, and hung him....now how long do you intend to drag the body through the streets?

If you really intend to put an end to this discussion you would be best served to just leave it alone. A post from your point of view (especially when you're in the minority by a considerable margin) will be responded to by several from the other side. But you knew that, didn't you?;)

As long as you, and others like you, INSIST on playing "the Victim" when you clearly are not.

Two words of advice:
On the internets, reading comprehension is everything.
Remember the "First Rule of Holes"

as usual haze ya are correct............

now i dont mean to be ugly to anyone, but with so many 'smiths who do excellent work who also go above and beyond with CS and when they do make a mistake fall all over themselves to apologise and make it right ya gotta make a helluva product to do any good in the knife 'biz if ya dont respect your customers, thats just the way it is.

i've seen alot of big name 'smiths make a small error or 2 in shipping or whatever and be quick to post an apology to the customer and to make it right ASAP, when ya do that the problem usually goes away quickly with everyone happy, imho its just common sense to respond with civility any other response does nothing but make the 'smith look bad.

a simple explanation and perhaps an apology works wonders with most folks on BF, imho we are all faily quick to forgive & forget as long as someone is trying to show he is gonna do the right thing, or at least try his darndest to do the right thing.

just a thought...............

Very wise words sir

As long as you, and others like you, INSIST on playing "the Victim" when you clearly are not.

The only 'victims' I hear are Mr. Brooks, a victim of poor/no communication, and all of the 'victims' on BFC that feel they were offended.....no money was taken/stolen, no crimes commited, no fraud......only hurt feelings.

Like I have already stated, I had a fine experience, I got what I felt was more than my money's worth and had no communication problems.....no 'victim' here, sorry. :)

in order to make the hall of shame he would have to have some really bad transactions or complete failures to deliver a product.

being a jerk, in and of itself, doesn't really qualify.

I support brooksknives completely in his complaint. The problem with 15 days w/o communication is that until the product actually arrives it feels like forever....if fact, it could be forever as far as the buyer knows. And the responses given by the maker in question show he is unfit to sell on the internet. The market will ultimately exclude him unless his attitude changes.

Not trying to change the subject, but I have a candidate for the "hall of shame" myself. (Didn't know I could nominate someone until now. :D ) Here's my candidate:

Since this is a Community of people gathering for a common interest, the need to have a place to out the bad apples is important to protect the others.

Communities with decent people do that for each other. Not to criminalize certain members, but to protect and support each other.

The integrity shown by most of the members here in the BFC is something everyone should aspire to own for themselves. Keep up the good work Keith!

If you've ever been abused by a seller yourself your interest in the GBU forum increases. Making GBU a hobby is one way to help deal with any lack of justice you've experienced in your own dealings.

I think the "body" should be drug to the hall of shame and left on public display. That is, unless the dealer comes to his senses and simply apologizes for his thoughtlessness and rudeness. I ran an ebay store for three years with no negative reviews. That's not as hard as it may sound. If you goof on an order you apologize and provide some sort of compensation for the buyers trouble, such as, for example, covering the cost of shipping.

if you are going to continue to make these type of posts, you will continue to get responses, thus keeping this thread at the top of the page.

many here, including myself, buy most of our knives on the exchange.

as such, i am pleased that this forum polices itself. ie, we all watch out for each other (for the most part), and make public poorly handled transactions.

if you pay any attention at all, you should also take note that we also give sellers/makers the benefit of the doubt more often than not. they are always given an opportunity to address concerns. and again, more often than not, the op is made whole.

agreed, it seems like forever. not knowing the status of a shipment leaves the buyer thinking they are being ignored or the shipment has been lost.

however, i dont think 15 days is terribly long. i also think the maker should at the very least have indicated some timeline for shipping.

i dont think mstephen is unfit to sell here or on the net in general. one poorly handled transaction should not result in any sort of removal from bfc. given the attitude he has presented in this thread, i certainly would not buy from him, or buy one of his products from another member. he does have a customer base, however small or large it may be, who have been happy with the deals made here.

typically in threads such as this, there are many members who step forward to add dissenting opinions to the original post. that there have been very few here i find particularly troubling.

it is possible that others have had the same experiences, and chose not to start a thread for whatever reason. but of course, it is also possible this is an isolated event.

for the most part, all we have to make a judgement are the op's posts and mstephen's responses.

If someone posts a comment that I want to reply to, I will. If you have a problem with that, tell someone that cares.

You're very objective Morimotom and that's a good thing. What bothers me about mstephen is his unrepentant attitude. If you have disappointed a customer it costs you nothing to apologize, and it is in your own best interest to try to improve your business practices. But I think you are correct that buyers can make their own decisions in this case. Myself, I like nice, smooth transactions and would therefore avoid mstephen. Figuratively speaking, you could never tell whether you will get the lady or the tiger.

One more point. Sometimes makers develop a devoted following who are very fond of the products they provide. Some makers feel grateful and somewhat humbled by this response. Others become arrogant and develop the attitude that buyers, especially new buyers, are lucky to get a chance to deal with them at all. I call this the "Jesus Christ response". They think they can do no wrong and that ,even if they do [wrong], their devoted following will support them anyway. And sometimes their fan club does just that; after all, the problems revealed on GBU are other peoples problems. I've dealt with this sort of seller myself, and they seem to only get worse. Buyer beware!

Executed?????

Stepping on one's (*insert edit now-->*)"special area of a man's body"(<--end edit) ( like the extenze commercial) may be fatal but is a cruel but poorly effective means of suicide. It certainly is not the sole application of physcial force one would use to kill another. ouch!!!

Public Opinion of the self-employed can be deadly and/or profitable, depends I suppose on the opinion of the knife buying public.

But I do agree with others; this is starting to look like the horse has been beaten and is close to death.............

I should like to point out that the op originally stated in his post

however i did have to pay more for taxes and customs fees than i should have. I payed 75$plus shipping on this knife and on the customs form the knife maker put a 200$ value on the knife
so i paid almost double on the fees i do not see how or why he would say it is worth almost 3 times what i payed for

So the op was forced to pay almost 3 times the customs charges for the knife. Mstephen admitted that his wife made an error in shipping but NEVER APOLOGIZED for this. So the op is out some money due to the uncaring attitude of the maker.

Those of us who live outside the States and have to pay duty and tax are rather sensitive to overinflated values and wasting our money on unnecessary expenses.

It is true that Lee had to pay more for GST than he should, but he also paid $23.00 less for shipping than it actually cost, so in the end, Lee ended up way to the good. That doesn't mean that the maker couldn't have posted that he was sorry for the screw up, but that doesn't appear to be the way mstephen does things.
