If any of you guys owned a Strider AR you'll know what I'm talking about. A Stud was just (at times) not enough to get that big ole blade into motion. There were times I'd slip if my hands were wet or really dirty. And once the stud got caught on the edge of my pocket and opened the damn thing as I was pulling it out. Bought cut my finger off LOL. I like the HOLE. Nothing to snag. The only part about it that's gonna fail is your thumb. And it doesn't need any refurbishing or refinishing or retightening like a stud might. I bet Jerry would be hating life if he had to start doing regular warranty maintainance on a bunch of thumb stubs. It's one more (Attached) piece that can fail or fall off or something. If your hole fails... your blade has failed. And I don't see that happening with INFI... It is INFI right?

The hole is the way to go if your blade shape/design will support it. The Spyderco Military Model showed that the 9/16" (14mm) hole works great even if the user has large/stubby fingers or is wearing gloves. This works great, good grip, holes work for "Right-ies" and "Left-ies", holes don't snag, and less weight.

This is twice now that I have to ditto WTFOver's thoughts on the folder design; I guess great minds think alike.

One thing that I still cannot believe that other manufacturerws haven't done os to have a hole (maybe with a little groove machined into it) and then a hole insert containing a thumb stud for those who prefer that. The insert would be reversible for righties and lefties and have a set screw, cam, toggle or some other means of attachment. Depending on the complexity of the design the thubm studded hole insert could push the manufacturing cost up beyond its market interest, but hey, how many of us appreciate watches with complications we rarely use?

Great feedback boys!!!! Excellent! ! I have been very surprised by the results. I thought the thumb stud would win by an overwhelming majority.

Thanks,

Keep it coming!

Thumb Hole! No stud to loosen or loose and nothing to snag. Thumb hole would also be better for a heaver blade. More surface for the thumb to use for opening. Looks like my goal to start saving money is going right out the window.

I want ambi operation (opening and carry). I would prefer a dual stud, but would take the hole over a single side stud.

Jerry,
please don't use the thumb hole.
It is ugly,
it weakens the blade,
dis I mention it is really ugly?
I use folders with dual studs for some years now, there was never a problem. My starmate was retired after six weeks of carry, I got fes up with the ugly hole.
Last year I "ordered" The Folder at Bussecombat germany, but I wont buy a folder with a big hole in the blade.
Maybe you could use both designs as options?
Hans

BIG HOLE! :D The Strider AR stud is poorly designed. It's too small & has a freakin' sharp edge. :barf:

Hey Guys..

I'm Really happy you guys like my idea soooooo much...

Don't everyone rush to say "Good Idea Eric":)

As an alternative to my earlier comments, in preference of a hole, but thinking you should do both, let me now suggest:

Neither!

How about making a folding knife with a durable enough locking mechanism and a heavy enough blade, intended primarily for flicking open. Then give it a closing bias and put traditional tiny thumbnail grooves (on BOTH sides--like I said, I'm ambidextrous), to keep it legal under silly laws in places like California.

This design wouldn't have any unnecessary large hump sticking out from the handle when the blade is folded closed. It wouldn't have any unnecessary stress risers. It would be simple, elegant, and minimalist. Cheaper to make, less to break.

I vote for a large, oval shapped hole. A hole is simple, probably is less costly to produce, has less weight, can be elegant in its design, used right or left handed, will not tear-up the corner of your fingernail under stress, will not snag or jam when slicing with the full length of the blade and will not have a tendency to fray the carrying material it has contact with.

that will work for me, i hold the blade and flick the handle down. as long as there is enough blade showing i could grip it between my thumb and index finger, it would work fine. you could even stipple the blade for "no skid flip grip"

i do understand some hold the handle and flip the blade, and for those of you who haven't tried the other flip try it, it works great for me.

with knife in pocket and tip down (benchmade mini afk) reach in and grip the blade with your thumb and forefinger, by the hole if it has one, after removing knife, hold it with handle on the bottom and fingers in the same place (the hole) flick the handle down towards the floor. if it is fairly smooth in action the handle will travel down and the to the rear into the palm of your hand. it should be deployed with out having to change the grip at all.

or pull the pin and start counting to three, if the vegi or villain doesn't run like hell then the knife wouldn't have any effect either.

did i miss something or is there a fold in the future for us? a busse?

does a bear $hit in the woods?

will hood own one?

hanover, i agree 100 nuclear %, now if we could sway them to tip down or at least reversable, the democratic way, we could vote after we got the elusive busse 1/4" infi folder!:D

or we could send the design to florida and let them vote on it. that should put the knife on the market sometime around the turn of the NEXT century.

buy the way... was my vote for tip down counted right? who is doing the tally? are they sober? do the like guys from out west? how about indians? do they like republicans? sushi? kangaroos?

:D :D :D :D

forgive me, i got a early start on a saturday gin and tonic!

stay safe this weekend my friends! :footinmou :footinmou

May I offer an opinion?

Be prudent in naming the folder and in designing the opening mechanics if you want Canadian residents to avoid the risk of summary convictions, fines and possibly jail time.

The Canadian Criminal Code, S. 84., which defines Prohibited Weapons, includes any knife that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device attached to the handle of the blade. The "push" is to apply this definition to knives that can be opened with one hand. A favorite tactic of the police or RCMP when they see a pocket knife clip is to: (1) Ask you to open it for them, and (2) justify why you are carrying a knife in the first place --- I will not comment on an answer for this second question. Incidentially, if the knife is not visible at all times, you get a summary conviction on a concealed weapons charge.

Continued in part two.

Part 2.

If you open the folder with a snap of the wrist, you are in trouble. If you flick it open smoothly with one hand (stud or hole), you are in trouble. Always demonstrate the opening slowly with two hands. If the officers still want to confiscate the knife on the spot by giving you the choice of giving the folder to them and continuing on your way or taking a ride with them to the station, always take the ride. You will get your knife back and the officers will have one less $200.00 knife in their personal collection.

get your concealed permit if you haven't already exercised your right, and tell the sob's you are going fishing, if they ask for your fishing pole tell them you are on the way to buy it. if they ask where you're fishin then tell them "no tellem creek" if they harass you more then have them call ol nimmie, he'll just laugh and tell then to shove a artificial cherry up there tailpipe!

Spyderco hole (round hole) or stud, really don't like any other hole shapes-- uncomfortable and ugly.

I kinds figured it would just come out with an opening hole that doubles as a CBL bottle opener, and a can tab lifter built into the scales (for wimmin buyers)....:D :p :D

Hi Jerry-

Thanks for running these polls about features on the forthcoming folder. My vote was for an OPENING HOLE for this knife.

Nothing can go wrong with a hole. It works efficiently in the greatest number of positions. It cannot hang-up on pocket material. It is quite sleek if a person wants to push the whole knife into a garment pocket to minimize detection.

Concerned about breakage? C'mon folks, gimme a break?! How often are any of us really BREAKING our folders in normal (even abnormal) day-to-day use? Remember, this puppy is going to be handcrafted from INFI.

Thanks for your time,
