Old Friends Friday

I always enjoy carrying this old friend, a Thiers-Issard Violon :)

I've been tempted by the violon, but I was put off by what Sabot said about who carried them traditionally. I don't remember , priests and somebody.
This might be my first poured epoxy handle. It's a while ago. It was meant to be sky- blue, but the brass show-through made it green.

Still no natural light here to speak of. It's snowing but not sticking.

That's interesting Jer, I wonder why it was popular with the clergy?! :D I must admit, I have not looked into the history of the pattern at all

Sabot has removed the bit I was remembering.
Fancying myself as one of Nature's warrior priest poet philosopher kings, I wasn't put off by the priests so much as the combination.
Maybe it was just an excuse to not buy another knife at the moment.
After all, I can carry this little girlie kitchen garden knife all right.

I was just looking for it Jer 🙂 You have some nice French knives 😎 I reckon I could easily spend another lifetime learning about, and collecting, French cutlery 🙂

In 2013 this Farm Boy was on the shelf for weeks with me admiring it almost daily. Guess those days are gone 😢 but... I remember being totally thrilled to receive it after what seemed like a very long wait. Today, after ten years of regular use and some minor personalization, I'm even happier to have this Good Ol' Friend in hand then I was day one.

Classic pocketknife - in a knife like that you can see that GEC achieved their purpose of breathing new life into old standards. OH

Thanks Jack. Yes, those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end... ;)
At that time half the fun of the hobby was in mulling over potential purchases, comparing other possible choices, reading reviews and talking with friends about their experiences. We live in a whole new world. One in which my wonderful MIL says, "I didn't sign up for this." I'm not quite there yet but I can certainly understand the sentiment.

I think GEC has dine a good job of resurrection new life in the older traditional styles, and while I think they can be pricey in the secondary marke, at least we have an American knife company keeping the hobby alive, and introduced traditional knives to new generations.

Had an old friend from 30 years ago call me out of the blue a couple of weeks ago. We have stayed in sporadic contact since then, but only through email - I’m still not sure how he got my number. His phone battery died and we got cut off after just a few minutes.

His call brought on a flood of powerful memories from a time in my life that left an indelible mark on me. I dug some old souvenirs and photos out of a closet where I try to keep them buried most of the time, and also spent hours on Google Earth looking at the places I have been.

I get this way from time to time, and each time it seems I get a little closer to reconciling my past with my present - acknowledging the good parts, and admitting to the bad parts but understanding they were still a part of what made me the person I am today.

While in this state I learned of the death of a longtime work buddy, who I also shared some volunteering activities with, which reminded me of the death of a common buddy of ours 2 years ago.

Hearing of Duane’s passing this morning brought all this back to the fore - even though I didn’t know him I understand how it feels for those of you who did. I get the idea he would have too.

Sorry for the long read. Here is a picture of an old “knife friend”:

Sorry for the loss of your friends Tom :( I do think that Duane would have been able to relate to what you said, as I can myself. Revisiting the past is not always easy
Sorry for the departure of an old friend Jack.
Thank you Bob
