Old Friends Friday

This was my first congress pattern a JA Henckels with gunstock walnut scales, made by Boker, I've had it for 15 years now and the scales still have a great luster which is hard to capture in a pic, I was Christmas shopping and bought a Boker 240 and this, I wasn't sure which I was going to keep and which I was going to gift, I picked the Henckels because I was still a professional chef at the time and had a few Henckels in my kit, I've since being a knife nut added the Boker 240 to my stable of sharps :D

Thanks Jack :) Whenever I take that wee knife out and handle it, lotsa warm memories come to me. He and his wife Dotty were very nice folks, living a simple life. She would take the opportunity of a visitor to sneak a piece of candy, she was diabetic, I'd always stay a while and chat with them after helping out.

Sound like great people Duane :)

Great thread, Jack!

Thanks Al, it's great seeing all these Old Friends, some real treasures :)

I love this thread. Beautiful stuff everyone!

Here is my first knife and the one that got me hooked:

Picture is from today - and we have another blizzard (yep, blizzard) hitting us tomorrow - our 3rd this year!

This one is also very nice as the spring is flat in all 3 positions:

Going into my pocket right now! Thanks Jack Black!

Away again on Friday, where I cannot post pics! Darn!
This is a great thread. I enjoy everyone's "friendly" back stories!

clutchcarter, that's an OUTSTANDING swayback jack!!:thumbup:
Your old friend can come play at my house any time! :D

This was the knife that started it all for me. I had just taken up whittling several years back and decided to get a good whittling knife. I saw this 1977 Case 64052 medium Congress knife in an antique store, and bought it. I carried this and whittled with it for quite a while, then I discovered GEC, Canal Street Cutlery, and many others. It has been in a drawer for a very long time, and I am glad you reminded me to revisit this old friend.

Not necessarily the "oldest" friend I have, but definitely one with which I've bonded quite strongly.
Makes me think of the kindness of the folks here on the forum, and how lucky I am for many reasons.

I like Old Friends Friday. Thinking about the notion for the rest of the afternoon, and on the drive home, made me inclined to hang out with another old friend when I finished work and began to shift into weekend mode. I grabbed this one off the bureau, snapped it open and closed, felt the edge with the ridges of my thumbprint, and dropped it into my pocket. Definitely an old friend, and always comforting to have close at hand, this lovely stag toothpick, by John Lloyd, was a gift from my and our good friend Duncan, a few years ago. it pushes all the right buttons for me, and is extra special due to its provenance.

Two beauties for sure, puukkomon!! One could easily bond to either of those knives:thumbup::thumbup:

What puukkoman says really resonates with me! I've only been here for a year, but it's certainly true that my "old friends" (knives) tend to be connected to "new friends" (people) I've "met" here! ;);)

Hey, what's wrong with that blade, side to side play? If so, it's easy enough to fix

Some side to side play, but more os a weak back spring. Blade sags when open. I know it can be fixed. But I like having it that way as a reminder that I used it more than any other knife.

The Texas Jack was, I think, my first Case knife, and I received it as a Christmas present. I really like the pattern, which I think is a classic, and initially carried it a lot. A few months later though, I had a serious problem with a GEC knife, and the vendor here in the UK, couldn't replace it. After a chat with Papa Andi, I opted for a GEC #66 Serpentine Jack as an alternative. That knife really kicked the Case out of my pocket, and I've felt guilty about it ever since :o Today, I thought I'd carry this old friend with me when I go to meet ScruffUK at Jorvik Viking Festival :)

Have a great Friday everyone, and a great weekend

Hey Paul-that is sensational. beautiful green coloured bone.I'm guessing family heirloom?
JB-not too many at ye olde viking meadhall now y'hear ? don't want any pre season injuries to contend with.

These are my two oldest friends, the top one my dad carried in his waistcoat pocket, as far as i can tell it is a Joseph Rodgers, the bottom one is probably my first knife a Richards given to me about 1953, of course i do not carry either one now although they both have good walk & talk and i would never part with them.
