Old Friends Friday

Jack, you must take pictures of the Vikings again! Was that last year that your Quest led you to some trouble with those folks?

In my pocket today is my old Boker. This is the knife that made me appreciate the Barlow pattern. Before, I thought they were too bulky for their size, and somehow off balance looking with that big single bolster. Then I held this one, and the switch flipped. I love this little tank.

Happy Friday, everyone!

This old friend came to my hand through some "horse trading" with Confucious37...

it'll brighten up my day riding in me pockets :)

This old Griffon is always my go to knife for fine leather cutting, the coping blade is like a tiny razor.

Have a great Friday and weekend folks.

Best regards

Robin

Back in 1991 I was home on leave from the Army. My folks and I found ourselves in a knife shop on Bath House Row in Hot Springs, Arkansas and Dad bought a Wenger S.I. stamped 88 on the file side. I loved that knife and carried it for a while before my work in the Army caused me to switch to a Leatherman PST. After active duty, my trusty S.I. went into my Search and Rescue pack I kept in my truck. Loved that knife, and would go back to the pack occasionally to carry it for a day. Then one day someone broke into the truck and my pack and knife was gone forever. That was five years ago. I've mourned the loss of that knife because of the sentimentality and it just being a great knife.

Friday I received a package in the mail from a dealer on the bay, and felt my chin quiver. It's not the same knife Dad gave me, but it's 1988 Wenger S.I. in near mint condition. I've looked for a while and finally found one that wasn't a crazy price or beat up. It's become my "new" old friend.

Here are the Old Friends that I've got with me today, in honor of Old Friends Friday.

First up is my Case trapper, in chestnut bone and CV. This one was made in 2000, which is when I bought it new. We've probably been through more adventures together than any of the other pocket knives I possess. Love this one.

Also along for the ride is this KHampton swayback. This was my first custom knife, and I was extremely lucky to have won it in a give-away by the maker, Kerry Hampton, some years ago. The D2 steel in this knife is *very* well treated -- it's SO hard, that of all the time I've owned and used this knife, I've only ever sharpened it TWICE. :D
This knife also reminds me how lucky I am to be a part of this community, which is filled to the brim with kind and generous folks.

Two lovelies there Alex

JB-not too many at ye olde viking meadhall now y'hear ? don't want any pre season injuries to contend with.

Unfortunately, poor old ScruffUk wasn't able to have a drink today due to a course of antibiotics. I thought I should have a few on his behalf :D  I got you a Viking flag and bumper sticker! :D

These are my two oldest friends, the top one my dad carried in his waistcoat pocket, as far as i can tell it is a Joseph Rodgers, the bottom one is probably my first knife a Richards given to me about 1953, of course i do not carry either one now although they both have good walk & talk and i would never part with them.

Very nice :)

It was indeed last year r8shell - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...d’s-Quest-Part-10-Vikings-and-Thieving-Varlet  Strangely, Vikings seemed comparitively thin on the ground this year - maybe Ragnarok had done for them after all  ;) I did manage to get one or two pics and will try to upload them later, but the only direct encounter Scruff and I had with one of the Vikings this year was with a Viking taxi-driver who was trying to encourage us to visit Vikingland on behalf of the Norwegian Tourist Board! :D

Great looking Barlow r8shell :)

Classic Sitflyer shots! :) Great stuff Duane, always a pleasure to see

That has heaps of character Robin

Glad there was something like a happy ending

This is the one that started it all. My first barlow and the one that sparked my fascination with the pattern. I have a few (;)) more now, but this is still one of my favorites.

Beauty, Philll! Looks good with black pants!!

This one walks around with me, especially on picnics and hikes.

It has served at the picnic table, de-barked a few hiking sticks, and skinned a few electrical wires, but is a relatively low miler.

At this rate, maybe my great-grandchildren will use it!!

Not an old friend, but a good one!:)

Very nice Lambertiana :)

Cheers JB.:)

The whole thing was pretty pitiful this year I'm afraid. This is about the nearest I got to a photo of a Viking, in the 14th Century Merchant Adventurers' Hall - http://www.theyorkcompany.co.uk/ There was a '10th Century Market' in there, which was one of the main events, and which you had to pay admission. Scruff was extremely scathing about the 'tat' on sale on the dozen stalls there. The whole event must have been very disappointing for anyone who had travelled a long way to see it :(

Viking bolas in the foreground?
Grand timber-work though.

I was carrying the Western in the middle yesterday. It has been largely displaced the the Case mini-trapper, right.

I've been meaning to post in this thread but Friday keeps going by without doing it. So here is my Old Friday friend, from sometime in the 1980s.

Jack, I remember visiting the Merchant's Hall when we were in York some years ago. It's a must see for a visitor. A beautiful building with lots of history. I'm sorry to hear the market was less than stellar.

I'm glad that you were able to see the Merchant's Hall Gary, a lot of visitors to the city seem to miss it as it's a bit tucked away  There's a few more pics of it in this old thread if anyone is interested - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...d’s-Quest-Part-10-Vikings-and-Thieving-Varlet

Great to see all these Old Friends being carried :)

Jack

We didn't miss much, Jack. Our youngest son, Daniel, was attending York U as part of his Cornell U undergrad program. He had been there awhile and was our tour guide.

Excellent Gary  Well if ever your lad misses anything about his stay in Yorkshire - a steak & kidney pie or some Marmite perhaps - you know who to ask! ;) :D
