Our "Front Porch" ....

I heard those PA chipmunks can be hard to kill and quite dangerous if wounded, good luck with the hunt and be careful! :)

I'll say F.O. - I've run into Military trained Drug Cartel assassins in Honduras (mid-80's) that weren't as crafty and slick as the Great N/E Chipmunk.
I (of course) started with the PC/Humane route of the "live trap" - that was a joke. They went in, stole the bait and painted graffitti on the walls.
Mouse traps with peanut butter and oatmeal - licked clean tripped and flipped.
It's sniper time.
Just gotta get up pre-dawn and wait.

Happy hunting. If you would like a wake-up call just let me know. Most every of my days begins prior to sunrise.

Hope you're not gunning for Alvin of the three chipmunks, with his wealth he may hire Honduran hit men to get you! Hey if this escalates and you need back up maybe we can round up some of the regulars and their weapondry for a chipmunk hunt! Keep us posted on your progress !

Hello all,

I've been lurking here for a little while, but I _just_ received my very first Hinderer (a 3.5" Gen 4 XM-18 Spanto w/ a goldish/bronze anodized lockside and blue-black G-10 scale) literally 20 min ago and I'm pretty excited about it so I thought I'd take a couple minutes and introduce myself. My first name is Shane, I'm relatively new to BF and brand new to RH knives - actually I'm fairly new to "higher end" knives overall, only really been getting more into them over the past year or so. I would occasionally have some downtime and internet access on my most recent deployment and discovered Blade HQ and then BF. Up to that point I was fairly content with my small assortment of Benchmades, Gerbers, and Kershaws (I thought the S30V Blur w/ assisted opening was awesome...), and a couple of Pro-tech autos.

Since then, I've really gotten into custom fixed-blade knives - mostly with an eye toward functionality for hunting and outdoors use, but there sure are a lot of "pretty" ones out there too! I'll be honest, I've been trying to figure out for a long time the huge following (and consequently high secondary market prices) of Hinderers and CRKs - I might be getting there :)

This thing is cool! I bought it off another member who frequents these forums, so it may or may not look familiar. I have a 3" XM-18 on layaway at a local knife shop, so I'm not entirely sure if I want to consider this one my first or second - but since it's in my hands now I guess I'll call it my first :)

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and gush a bit over my "first" Hinderer with like-minded folks since my wife's response is gonna be something like, "that's cool, you spent how much?!" I think I'm going to really enjoy tinkering with this one and acquiring at least a couple more...

While I was anxiously waiting for this one to arrive today (I think I wore out the USPS tracking system), I pretty much read through this entire thread - seems like a nice place to hang out if you'll have me. I enjoy a good bourbon/scotch/coffee/beer/red wine and cigar on the porch, preferably while grilling up something I've killed or caught!

Well, think I'll go pour a cold one and play with my new knife!! (I think it needs a lanyard if I can find some complimentary-colored paracord around here somewhere..)
Cheers,
Shane

Welcome Shane and congrats on discovering XMs and scoring your first one. Check out the "sticky" threads for some good information as well when you have time.

Shane, welcome and congrats on the XM.

In time, you will come to your own understandings on some of the questions / topics you mentioned. I avoid posting in certain area of BF due to the various opinions on topics that boil down to very personal choices / concepts.

Enjoy your beverages and your new knife!

Hello all,

I've been lurking here for a little while, but I _just_ received my very first Hinderer...........

Hello, and welcome! You picked the perfect first (or only) Hinderer, and you got my favorite scale color. My EDC has a scratched up scale in the same color, and I don't leave home without it. Stick around, make friends, and post lots of pics! ;)

Oh, and congrats on getting back from your deployment. I may be going back over there soon, if I can get medical clearance.

AZ2 welcome, you have purchased the most iconic Hinderer and should serve your needs well. Lone Wolfe appreciate your service, you have done your duty, please consider stateside deployment. I understand the need, as a SWAT guy, I could not wait for the next call, either way we all stand by your decision.

Yes, Welcome. Look around. Check out the stickies and the threads with a gaZillion views for some good info and great pics.

Thanks all! It's been almost a day and I'm still pretty happy - my wife made me put it away when we grabbed some lunch but otherwise been doing my best to wear it out...

I've taken a look at the stickies, yep lots of good info - looking forward to learning more!

I agree, I think this scale looks great - especially w/ the bronze anodized lock side. I fully intend to carry this one quite a bit, I don't expect that I'd ever sell it - I typically don't like reselling things like knives and guns. Even if it's one I just don't ever seem to use or carry I like to hang onto stuff, then again it might be because once I decide to buy something it's because I want to own it. A rare exception to that was some Emerson I ordered from Blade HQ while I was in the desert this last time, I returned it because it was just too big and unwieldy for pocket carry (I forget which one it was exactly, but iirc it has a 3.75-4" ish blade).

I find this 3.5" XM-18 right on the line of big enough to not quite too big for my taste in a folder. I don't think I'd like the 4" XM-24, but I do think I'm really going to like the 3" XM-18 for days when I don't want the bigger knife tugging at my pocket. Or, actually, my flight suit - I'm a USAF flyer (well, I was - still authorized to wear the bag, but not longer actively flying) and I like to tote around a folder clipped to the zipper seam of my right thigh pocket and a large/heavy knife tends to sag and flop around right there..

and congrats on getting back from your deployment. I may be going back over there soon, if I can get medical clearance.

Thanks! It's good to be back, I'm sure you and many others around here know the feeling. I didn't mind deploying, quite the opposite - that's when we actually get to do the job for real - except for the obvious downside of being away from home and family. That said, the time away wore away at the wife and I (she was also AD USAF ) and we decided that we had enough time on the road between multiple deployments and several remotes. My dream assignment came through (full-time Air Guard, stationed in Alaska) so I recently punched off AD and plan to finish out my 20 or so in the AKANG. Sorry about the med issues - without knowing the particulars, I sincerely hope it works out/gets better so that you're able to deploy if that's your desire.

Cheers,
Shane

Rubicon, your hunting story reminded me of a few nights ago. My dog (Honey, a golden retriever) was acting strange outside, and found that she had an opossom trapped in the garden. Since I live in the city, firing off a gun at midnight is rather frowned upon, even if I do have gun friendly neighbors. So, out came the Gamo air rifle. After a body shot and a head shot later, the threat was eliminated.
I guess my dog was upset that she didn't get to dispatch the ugly rat-looking creature, because the next day while mowing, I scared a rabbit out of the bushes, and after a brief chase, Honey had a new chew toy.

@AZ2AK my thanks and appreciation to you and your wife for your service and sacrifice.

@BikerTrash Not too long ago I had to dispatch a deer that had been struck by a vehicle at night. I had a clip of sub-sonic 9 mike mike (can-friendly) that did the job and did not alert anyone in the area...I knocked on a friendly door and asked them not to be startled by the noise...their response was "what noise".

That's hilarious...I miss having a dog!:D

Great stories (love this thread for that) My definition of "excitement" is "Pete" muscleing me out of the way at 0400hrs. when the Bear is out back. Pete has absolutely zero fear (Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred to hunt Lions...so) a Bear even weighing in at 600-800 Lbs. is simply an aggravation for Pete. I wish I had had a free hand the night my Wife went to take Pete out one night only to find the Bear when they opened the door. How she got in a position where the Bear was between her and the house but, she did. Never seen her or heard her so scared.
I went into dark mode and only remember moving faster than most people might believe I'm capable. I got past the Bear, grabbed Kim by her arms and she landed 10-12 feet away and at the bottom of the stairs leading to safety. I then turned my attention to what was quickly developing into a dangerous death match of tag between Pete and the Bear, Pete stepped his game Up when he realized what was going on with Mom and Dad - cudos Pete. As for Me, No Man left behind includes ALL my buddies furry ones included.
I commenced to bouncing 2-3 lb rocks off of Big Blacks head and ass. He didn't know what was irritating him more - Pete or Me.
Time to leave except Pete was having none of that so now I'm really pushing the envelope following Pete and Big Black deeper into the Dark woods. Thank God Pete finally heard Dad screaming and realized I sounded ...... like I wanted "us" to go home.
Man o Man, I needed a drink to calm down that evening.
Pete is good stuff, great friend to have.:)

Nice story of teamwork to a desirable outcome, Rubi.

Often the instinct of the friend can exacerbate a situation, glad he realized his master knows best. My previous doggie was all kill, and a hassle to control once turned on...current puppy is better behaved.
