Our "Front Porch" ....

I tried to talk my dad into a Raptor, he bought a Platinum 6.2L instead, was sold on all of the luxury options (heated seats, auto fold down running boards, etc). It is funny, he has always had a truck, but that didn't rub off on me, I like cars.

Hello folks...

Every now an then I have a thought...I'll share this one and see what happens.

If time travel ever is to exist; it exists right now, and has always existed...chicken/egg.

That's operating under a standard(ish) view of time. If you view time as linear (think- no free will/fate/predestination) as opposed to the to exponentially growing cones of time touching at the singular point of present, even traveling back in time would be traveling forward. I don't believe in any of that predestination business, but neither do I have high hopes for time travel. ;)

Time is a man-made concept. It's own true existence can be called into question. Humans use it to understand and discuss certain concepts for which the concept of time is necessary. Yes, it's linear; perhaps cone-shaped as you said..but it's certainly over-lapping layers (like a very large folded blanket viewed from the side to see the folds)...draw a vertical line thru all the folds and its possible to see "alternate" realities co-existing along the same plain even if not interacting with one another.

Anyone wana talk about black holes? :D

It's been too long since I've read A Brief History of Time, and I was more of an English and History nerd in college. Every few years I briefly get super interested in physics and read a few books that don't make nearly enough sense to me, but that pretty much the extent of my knowledge. I'm always up for good conversation, but I'm pretty easily out classed on black holes or physics. :D

So, speaking of trucks, I had something of a tragedy last Thursday. I had been off work for about a week (for my birthday no less) so I hadn't driven my truck for pretty much that whole time and the temps dipped down to the single digits for the highs and low negative double-digit lows. My batteries were dead since I didn't think to plug the truck in, I typically don't until it hits -20 or so.. Anyway, I pulled them out and putt'em on the charger Wed night so I could fire up the truck on Thu before having to go back to work on Fri.

Well, since I was already tinkering with the truck I decided that I'd chase down a small but pesky leak that cropped up recently. Since the truck was immobile, I was going to be crawling around under it in the snow and ice so I decided (and this is how I know I'm getting soft in my old age) to put a propane heater (Heater Buddy) on the ground near the front bumper facing toward the back of the truck. At about this time, my wife pulls up with breakfast burritos so I decide to join her inside for food and another cup of coffee.. Fast forward 15-20 min to me walking outside with said coffee to find the whole front end/engine compartment engulfed in flames. I'm talking 4-5' flame jetting up from the edges of the hood, which was closed but not latched. An initial OH F*** was followed by yelling to my wife to call the FD as I grabbed my (pretty much worthless) household fire extinguisher. It made zero impact to the fire. At about that time the FD arrived, having already been called by my neighbor, whom I'm sure was concerned about all of our trees and subsequently houses going up..

The FD put it out with lots of water, the end result being a completely destroyed engine compartment/front end and a water-logged dash and interior. Luckily, nothing else was damaged and no one was hurt - like my dumb-a$$, when I stood next to it trying to put it out initially.. So, my insurance is thinking total loss but it could have been so much worse - I'm so thankful that only the truck suffered. Although, the loss of this truck does bum me out - it was an '06 3/4 ton Silverado LT w/ the Duramax and Allison. My favorite truck of the ones I've owned, it was paid off and I had planned to keep it for as long as it was drivable.

As far as we (me and the FD) can surmise, it seems the heater malfunctioned and caught on fire, possibly exploding consequently catching the truck. We think this because: the heater was not actually under the truck, there were no fuel leaks, the front license plate was found several feet away and off to the side, and 1/3 of the radiator is missing - looks torn away. Well after the fact, I had the creepy thought of what shape I'd be in if I had been under the truck when this happened...! Lot's of lessons learned here, some of which could fall under "I should have known better" - like not leaving the heater unattended or using it around the truck in the first place. Although I, and most of my fishing buddies, use these heaters on our boats - often when sleeping...

So, to make this post at least a little topical - no new XMs for this guy for a little while anyway... Well, off to clean the debris off my driveway since I was at work all weekend.. Here's a pic - looks like it was a VBIED

Whoa, glad no one was hurt but that does suck. I used to use one of those style heaters when working in my dad's garage, hated that thing and glad I don't have to use it now.

That is a crazy story Shane. I'm glad everyone is ok and that the fire didn't spread. I'm sorry about your truck. That really sucks.

I had a client using that same heater IN his Garage (attached to his home) Working on the truck and his Son had moved the heater to get around the back. Moved it too close to the rear of the vehicle. About 20 minutes later B00M!
They barely got out of the garage alive. The explosion sent gasoline everywhere, the hood being up protected them from getting hit. It gets worse.
Took their brand new Home to the Ground and it was around this time of year.

Glad you were OK Shane - Truck can/will be replaced - You are still OEM. :)

Very thankful that you were not under the truck when that happened! That could have been much worse!

AZ2AK sorry about your loss, you really fried it! The bright side might be the insurance value may be higher than trade in value. Glad you're ok.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I was just sick for days, it really just sank in in a past 48 hrs or so. Yeah, I've been using these heaters for years - gonna reevaluate that from here on out, especially with Rubi's story! I am SO thankful it was only the truck. While it's not new, we only moved into our house this past year in April, so still new to us - regardless it would have really sucked to lose the house, or the neighbors, or the neighborhood. We're heavily wooded, lots of trees on bigs lots - spruce and birch.. The FD is only about a mile away, but the roads were icy and our neighborhood is hilly - I'm glad they were able to get in..

Also, and here's a silver lining of sorts, I'm fortunate enough to be able to swing replacing the truck - although I didn't want to and I'm not looking forward to a car payment, I had been perfectly content without one! I have a good insurance company that I've had my whole adult life, had carried comprehensive after paying the truck off - so should see a decent settlement hopefully this week. So, I've already decided to fast forward the eight years since I bought the one I just killed and replace it with a new version, a 2014 Silverado 2500HD w/ the 6.6L Duramax and Allision tranny.. I need something to pull my boat (that is if/when I get it now - the new truck might back burner the boat for a while). I'm off work today and tomorrow, already have financing secured - the local Chevy dealer (ironically the one I bought the other one from 8 years ago) has what I want in stock - even the color I want :) I think this will be a pretty significant example of "retail therapy"...

So, off to buy a new truck :)

On a lighter note, my wife benefits from all of this - she now has the trump card for the foreseeable future.

"...oh yeah? Well, you set your truck on fire..."

Since she forgot my birthday a couple of years back I had held the high ground. Alas, she has retaken it :o

Wow, Man...that sucks.

Glad people are alight.

Hope you get the replacement vehicle you're after.

Wow, good thing you are all right!

I watched a house burn down on a -15 degree morning in WI, cause was a space heater in the garage. Can't be too careful with those things.

As much as the initial situation sucks for you brother (honestly no bueno at all) - Trucks have came a long way in that time frame and you'll hopefully love the new one! The loss of that trump card though.... true tragedy!!!

I'm predicting one Hell of a Before/After Photo Pic-a-Thon coming as a result of B-fast Tacos :)

(not sure if that sounds quite right but you know what I mean)

Ah shoot, I forgot to take a pic at the dealer before driving off!! Too stoked I guess.. Stopped to grab a cup of coffee a couple blocks from the dealer and the truck's already dirty - the woes of winter driving in AK..

Pic of new but now dirty truck shortly.. (It's nice ;) kinda helps the sting...)
