Our "Front Porch" ....

Shane, you got some great advise from good folks here. My advise based on LEO supervisor dealing with both the general public and employee addiction issues, professional help is a must. If the base that you are stationed at has EAP ( employee assistance program) avail yourself to their services or referrals that they may have for you and your family. Like Others have said addicts are masters at deception including theft to support their habit, so securing money, jewelry, and other valuables (especially weapons) may be in order at this time. It certainly is a shame that you and your wife have to deal with this after opening your house to her, however good people that you are, you will get through this, God Bless
Joe

Today I brought my mothers 2009 Grand Marquis vehicle to the dealer for a warranty recall for the steering linkage. While up on the lift the assigned mechanic performed a " complimentary safety inspection", also known as mining for repair work. I was in the customer lounge watching the news loop of where the Malaysian Airliner may be or what happened to it and how our President ( community organizer) is trying to intimidate the Russian President (former Lt Col of KGB) to leave the Ukraine . The mechanic came in the lounge where I was presented with a list of repairs that were needed to make the car safe.

This is the vehicle that my dad bought new in 2009 and drove for four years prior to his death last November. His last couple of years driving were quite worrisome for our family. Here is the list of items that needed repair.

1. Passenger side mirror needs replacing. The duct tape and bungy cord are fine, dad clipped the mirror off several times pulling up to his mailbox ( mailbox replaced twice, last time I set it in sand so it would fall, over easier when he ran into it)

2. Front and rear brake rotors and pads need replacing due to bent rotors. He would drive the car through the pasture to check fence line, probably struck a couple of rocks.

3. Exhaust loose and catalytic converted bent and squashed. That damage I'm sure occurred last spring when he drove around a police barricade set up about a mile from our farm due to a farmer digging a ditch that struck a natural gas pipeline. He drove the car down a steep embankment then through a hedgerow and an old cornfield to get home. Unfortunately the deputy came to the house and escorted both mom and dad out until the danger had passed.

4. Front bumper twisted and pushed in on side. That occurred last fall in a parking garage at an Indian Casino when he didn't realize that the ramp inside the parking garage was one way, he was going the wrong way.

5. Front hood pushed in against the air cleaner. Apparently my mother said he ran over a speed sign on the NY S Thruway and the sign " slapped " the hood.

All said and done the estimate was a lot. I would present the estimate to mom and see what she wanted to do.

All that considered, it got my mother and father out to see friends and relatives. It got them to church every week, got them to doctors offices, pharmacy, shopping for groceries all the while keeping them safe. He was a careful driver and never had an accident only at the casino parking garage. While I was driving the car back to the farm, I was thinking what an important piece of their life this beat up car was a what it meant to them.

Anyhow it goes in next week for repairs, on me dad!

Reminds me of something I used to tell myself when I stopped working on daily drivers, and went to exotics for 4 yrs...I used to work on cars, vehicles that take people to work, pick up kids from school, and newborns from hospitals, quite a noble profession if done with those responcibilities in mind....then I went to repairing $250,000 (some were worth four times that!) cars, something I likened to "sharpening the tines of the devils pitchfork"...(sorry if any are offended! :) )....ultimately I realised that the exceptionally wealthy are humans just like me, and some of them were actually really wonderfull people to know, but it always bothered me when a pair of carbon ceramic brake rotors cost $10,000.00 and my daily driver was worth less...finally three years ago I went back to working on daily drivers, my wallet has regained much lost weight and my sole feels normal again, especially when I read a post like the one above!! /\ ... Thanks FO!!

oh and now you know why I've got a '64 db5 tach as my avatar.....I restored that one...

F.O. & Coop, thanks for the kind words fellas :) F.O., great story - made me smile. Ahhh, family.

Shane, sorry to hear about your SIL. I hope all the best for you and the best for her as well. She is going to need it as well as you too buddy. These things are very hard to deal with. Let me know if you need to talk brother :)

Wowcoop, on your side note... I bought a DAC from Audioengine it is relatively inexpensive for what you get. You can hook it up to anything with RCA jacks or digital fiber optics. It's called the D1. They also have an ultra portable one called D3. Both are 24bit DAC. But I'm no real audiophile, especially compared to Rubi. Their products are very highly rated. I also have their powered bookshelf speakers the A5+ model. And I love them :) Check em out

Thanks KJ will do! have you seen PONO? 9300kbps !!!! thats got to sound amazing! I can't believe how good lossless from cd sounds, and thats an embarrassing thing to admit....can't imagine what a master recording would be like..... for now I'm just re ripping all the cd's i still have into lossless format and loading up my old iPod classic , most of my collection was stolen a few years ago, and my digital library is all I've got left. How do you get HD content?

Can you upload lossless on your Ipod? I thought you couldn't? I'll have to check out the PONO!! I like the website called audioholics, maybe you've heard of it... If not check it out bro!!! I get lossless from cd's and other methods. It's expensive buying FLAC. I got fully emerged into reading about audio in depth and listening for awhile, but its been a minute :) How about yourself?

I've been drinking the mp3 coolaid for years, we even listened through ipods on $15,000 car stereos, and people from B&O trained us on sound staging using ipods, pretty funny when you think about it, kind of like ordering a Big Mac so you can take it to the Ritz for dinner.... any way a couple of years ago i built a component system in my car, and suddenly realized my audio collection sounds like crap....... been looking for "high quality 256 and 320kbps" ever since until I finally listened to lossless yesterday for the first time........pretty funny and embarrassing because lossless from a CD is only as good as the CD, so my average CD's are running around 968kbps or so, but thats kids play compared to what PONO is claiming, 9350kbps....... sort of why I posted the original question, which still stands: What Quality are our forum members listening to? Come on Rubi I know your reading this! We need to be schooled!

Haha! Yes it can get crazy just like anything else we love!!! But you still can't play lossless from an Ipod, right? And I don't think that PONO will play music at that level... Not only that, but can we really hear the difference. Maybe some of us could with audiophile speakers. And I don't think you know what you're missing from music until you have audiophile speakers and the lossless audio to play them to really hear the stuff you were missing before.

you can play lossless on an ipod if its an older classic.....according to what I've been reading (I think i did read that the latest gen does not support the lossless format, which if true is SAD!), and in any-case my re-ripped band of gypsys just blew me away! There is a ton of off recording chatter from Hendrix I never heard before, and new reverb and harmonics, not to mention low level feedback, all of which I never heard or forgot about when I trashed my vinyl... but you do have me second guessing, all I know is im deleting my old ripped content and replacing it at 900kbps avg and it sounds GREAT! If you check out PONO you will be impressed I think, they use old style big pot transistors, and amp circuits, in stead of chips...... i'm still on the fence, want to exhaust the quality i've got before I change my kit..no sense wasting the resources i've got until they've been maxed out.. I'll be synching my classic later tonight and i'll double check the settings and let you know, either way ripping at lossless has definitely improved the sound quality so far. My ipod has never sounded better through my car system, note: I connect through the 30pin not the audio jack..... and apologies too all for hijacking our forum I'll try to keep this topic to a minimum....Thanks guys .....

You/I can hear the difference up to that point but I don't think we could at the 9000 level is all I'm saying. That's cool you can play lossless on the classic. Maybe i'll have to snag one up :D I will check it out :)

KJ Lossless definitely does load and work on a classic. (in cd quality loss less, NOT IN HD QUALITY lossless)...sounds great too! Ok thats it no more hijacking the porch by wowcoop, sorry again Rubi, promise I'll bring crackers and cheese for everyone next time!

KJ, it is the first day of spring and the weather seems to be cooperating. It is only supposed to be in the lower 40's today but compared to the winter we have had in MN, sunny and 40 degree weather is very welcomed!

Wow, I didn't realize it's the first day of spring. That is a very welcoming 40 degrees Michael. I mean that's t-shirt and short weather compared to what you're used too over there!!! Haha!!
