Paramilitary refinement - need input

I guess I was more disappointed than I realized. :o I mixed up both the Millie and the Paramillie! Yes, as far as potential liner lock disengagement, it is the Millie which I speak of. All other factors still apply to the Para. I still ditched both! :D

ball bearing lock and carry options +/- low ride clip for me. thus far the one thing that has kept me away from spyderco has been the lack of a lock that is able to be operated entirely with one hand and is also ambidextrous. this and blade shape/steel are more important than anything else to me, any why i am mostly, thus far, a benchmade man. eagerly awaiting a spyderco that fits the bill though....

The lockbacks and ball bearing locks on Spyderco's can be closed with one hand and are ambidextrous.

Is there a possibility of getting a new pivot pin sent from Spyderco (hell, I'd pay a few bucks to cover it, no problem there) that fits the bill as far as replacing the double-sided torx pivot?

Or... I am putting on my thinking cap now... I guess that for this to work the pivot bolt and the hole it goes through would have to be flat on a side so that it would stay put while the nut was turned with the bit...

* * * * *

Okay, I just took apart my Military, for the first time ever. (!)

Now, as you know, the Military does not have the double-torx-pivot like the ParaMilitary. I had suspected that the pivot pin on the Military would have a flat side to keep it from rotating when the torx screw was turned on the other side. It does not. The pivot pin also would not come out of the G10 for me. I did not try to force it (very much) since I began to suspect it might be permanently installed.

So, although it is not flat on a side so as to resist turning, it resists turning pretty well all on its own. Is it just really tightly installed? (The lanyard-hole spacer was similarly tight, but I discovered that was because it is flanged on the part that goes through the G10.)

So... back to the original question: would it be possible to simply replace the ParaMilitary's pivot pin or would there have to be a redesign in the knife itself?

well, i guess it can, just not easily enough for me. ball bearing/axis/arc lock is the only way for me to fly right now, i just think they are overall superior for my needs. sadly the only company to offer the "entire package" for me with one of these locks is benchmade, i would much rather support spyderco...

I’ve only held one and the only improvement I can think of (other than the ones you’ve suggested) is a thicker lock-bar. It seems that one of the reasons it’s sticky is the lock-bar has some unpolished edges, a thicker one would still be stable and could have polished corners.

I think you could knock 3/8" or so off the handle length without compromising ergonomics.

Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing on my Para. Better quality control is all it needs. There are too many complaints and problems with blade play - although mine has never been an issue. 4 way clip is probably needed.

I like the para as is. Evolve the minor issues and leave all else alone !
What's good: dimensions, materials, overall design, lock.

How bout a sprint run with a different color handle and steel (any BG 42 left?) ?
Otherwise it's cool

If you were to lengthen the blade a tiny bit, make it ZDP189, and change it to a lockback, I'd be all over that baby. Of the three, the most important to me would be making it a lockback, then the steel, and lastly the length. Thanks for asking for input.

Thanx Nakano,

I spent 30 minutes last night trying to figure out how you accidentally released a compression lock with your index finger. I couldn't figure out how you did it. It's not an easy thing to do.

I'm looking to upgrade the design, not redesign. The model has a finger choil which we'll keep. We will cprobably change it some, but it's part of the design conceptg of the model.

Obviously you do not like finger choils, but many do, especially knife aficianado's. We do make quite a few designs without finger choils.

As far as locks and 4way clips;

Ball bearing locks, even with wings really get in the way of a tip down clip so those of you that are suggesting 4way clip and BB lock might want to think about that more deeply.

Although I'm new to this model, I'll still add my 5c.

I agree with th 4-way low ride clip camp - i prefer tip-up myself. Maybe a color G10 would be nice, green or blue.

Please do not change the lock or the blade steel. I am a big fan of the back lock, but the compression lock really is different (special).

As for the other issues mentioned about the handle, I can't say I've found it to be a problem.

I had never felt a smidge of blade play until I started (just last night) playing with the pivot Torx screws, as a result of the mention (which opened my eyes) of the fact that both sides have screws. (I now don't like that.)

I fooled around with it, but since I had only one Torx head for this, I was turning one side and it was turning the other. (Is there Loctite on it from the factory?) Now that I just bought another Torx bit to do the second side, I don't really want to open that can of worms, so I have not broken the connection that seems to exist between the two.

I have noticed that with quarter turn increments of the Torx screws, on some turns I end up with a tiny bit of vertical blade play, and with others it is eliminated. Bear in mind, that both screws are moving with the turn of one, so there is no blade tension change going on. This seems odd to me -- is there some reason why there would be on-again off-again blade play because of turning the screws?

I'm one of those people that never found a compression lock model I actually liked. Four examples I've personally owned had too much play for my tastes. (Two Li'l Temps and 2 Paras.)

No offense Sal, I'm a huge Spydie fan, but the compression lock has always left me with the impression that it "wasn't quite ready for primetime".

I like everything about the Para except for the lock, to be honest. Although I understand that pretty much falls into the category of "complete re-design".

Oh, and the first thing I did with my first Para was to install a new clip for tip-up carry.

Just my two cents.

(Woo-hoo! UPS says my ZDP Horn has arrived at home!)

As one who's carried and used their Para a fair bit, I've got the following recommendations.

-4 way clip sounds good

-when carrying in pocket, I've accidentally cut my finger, once, by reaching in for it, and finding the point accessible from between the scales of the handle. So, either a bit more handle, beyond the point of the blade when closed, or a stronger detent, as mine hardly has any detent at all... Possibly a QC issue.

-A bit more tip, for strength

-Full sized liners (even if they're nested) again for strength

-Availability of a para with Olive Drab G10 scales...

-Also, I'd LOVE to see it in a steel that's more famous for toughness, ductility, and/or strength, than S30V is.

I think it's REALLY cool of you to ask for input on this, Sal. :)

Well, pretty much all my desires for the para have already been mentioned, but I will add my voice just in case it might help push the improvements over the edge into adoption.

Deep pocket carry clip
abiliity to carry tip up
(the only reason I don't own one of these now. I have fifteen or so other spydercos, and loved this one until I saw you couldn't carry tip up. I feel you have to carry your folders in a consistant manner even if you don't carry the same one every day so that your movements to deploy are always the same)
Nested full length liners

I can't speak to the compression lock as I don't own a knife with this type of lock right now.

I'd like to see g10 in grey, brown or tan and a wave feature. The four way clip and rounded edge would take care of my only issues with this knife. I would also very much like to see a para fixed blade model in d2, basically identical to the folder with the exception of handle thickness.`
