Paramilitary refinement - need input

One more thing guys, I am confused how some of you can't use the lock with one hand? I am a righty and all I have to do is change the grip of my index finger from the choil to the piece of metal that releases the lock and pinch. I like it better than the lockback because I have to completly change the grip of my thumb which I feel secures the knife more than the index finger. I am a clumsy guy and I have dropped a few lockbacks changing my grip this much. on a lockback you also have to place the index finger at the top of the handle to stop the blade and then close the blade. With the Compression lock, I can pinch the lock and close it shut with a little flick of my wrist instead of the steps I have to take with the backlock. my favorite lock before this was the axis lock, but now I like having the lock completly tucked away inside of the knife instead of two huge studs sticking out. It keeps the knife cleaner looking in my opinion and also keeps it from accidently dissengaging. Being the dork I am I was stabbing cardboard and I stabbed a bit too far with my griptillian and a piece of the cardboard gripped the axis lock and disengaged it. This would be an impossibility with my Para. I would like to thank Sal and Spyderco for this design. You are going to have to work twice as hard to get this out of my pocket now.

Oh, I can unlock it one-handed all right, but in my right hand, I have to either roll the knife to the right or shift the whole knife forward to reach the lock with my index finger. It just feels awkward to me. In my left hand, I can release the lock with my thumb without shifting my grip. I set my Salsa up for left hand carry for that reason. I really don't care which way they go, as long as I can get the carry and lock to agree for me.

4-way clip

Low ride clip

Full sized titanium liners

Colored G-10

2.99" blade

Thank you,
Regards,
FRIZ

wire clip, possibly low ride?

different color g10s would be cool

coated 3v 110v etc whatever blade?

eliminate vertical play in pivot

Ti = big price hike, no?

With all these suggested changes, I'm glad I have one of the originals. I love it the way it is!

I second a 2.99 in blade because alot of towns have sub 3 inch knife laws. The para is almost less than 3 inches anyways.

Make it a liner or frame lock.
If you go with a shorter blade please shorten the scales as well.

I'd like to thank all of you for your well thought out suggestions.

We'll be starting this refinement at the end of the year and all thoughts and suggestions will be considered.

I do have some questions;

The blade length of the current model was the result of design rquirements to maintain a finger choil, like the Military and still provide for a full grip without using the chioil. If the blade is any shorter, say the 3" as suggested, the dynamic of the design must change. :o

This means a "finger choil only" grip like the Native or Caly, or a very tight joint like the Lil Temperance.

Neither of which do the same as the Para

Keeping in mind that performance and ergos carry more weight than appearance.

Whatchathink?

I would keep the blade lentgh the same, the knife feels great as is.
The only reason I do not have one is because of the compression lock and no tip up carry.

I would keep the blade length the same. I really doubt that any cop is going to get out a ruler and measure the blade. If you get into an issue tell them you bought the knife because of it's 3" blade because it's legal.

As for anything else, I love the current model just as it is.

I love this knife and think it only needs minimal updates.
-Blade and handle size/ratio.. SAME!!!
-Clip... 4 way Wire style.
-Steel... I have to agree with some that prefer BG42 over S30V. I find the BG42 much easier to touch up. Sometimes I have a heck of a time touching up my Para.
-Choil... I'd do it like the new military style on top and make the thumb ramp notches match it.
-Pivot pin... It is a bit tough to get it to stay at a set tension. I used blue locktite and that worked a couple months, but then it went back to the easy, but secure opening. I guess i like a bit more resistance when i open it that it was designed for. How about a one sided torx. To match the other screws and be more durable.
-Lock... Let's stick with the compression. Everyone has their opinion, but I think it just shines on this size/style of knife. OR... how about a Framelock with a Titanium handle!!

Cheers.

IMO Sperderco has enough 3-3.5 inch blades, especially with the UKPK, Delica 4 and the new black Calypso coming out. I have two of the S30V's and love the design ... if push came to shove, I'd like to see a blade steel that would make the design more available to the ELU. The premium editions are great but not easily affordable to the masses. I know it's redundant with the Byrd line (i.e. the Cara Cara) and the Endura, but something in VG-10 in G-10 with nested liners would be great in the sub $100 range. Compression or liner lock, no diff in my mind ... prefer the liner lock myself (if it fails it crumples, preventing the blade from folding and won't collapse on the fingers but thats another argument not for this thread ...). My $.02 :D

I think the handle to blade ratio IS perfect on the current Para. I don't care for the compression lock on this knife either. I would be thrilled if it was a lock back or framelock.

The Paramilitary fits a certain niche' in the Spyderco lineup and it doesn't really need much updating, beyond a couple of the suggestions already brought up:

- Drilled for both tip-up and tip-down carry
- Finer jimping
- Lower-riding pocket clip. Notice I didn't say "low-ride." When I think low-ride, I picture only 1 or 2 centimeters of the handle peeking out of the pocket. It's fine for some knives, but I like being able to grab on to a good portion of the handle when retrieving the knife from my pocket. The Paramilitary does sit a little high in the pocket...if there was a way to bring it down a little... :D
- Nested titanium liners/lock? Please? ;) :)

The blade-handle ratio is perfect, I love the thinness due to the nested liners, LOVE the compression lock (oh, and about that Military update... ;) ;)), and great blade profile/steel. The upcoming Calypso 3 will fill the needs of some that want full-liners, a lock back, smaller handle, etc. Keep the Paramilitary as was originally intended!

I would rather see it remain as it is than changed very much, but I think the blade could be shortened 1/8" without a total redesign. It doesn't really matter here, we have a 4" limit, but it would open up areas suffering under a sub-3" limit to another fine knife. I think I could stand to lose an eighth of an inch from the tip. Shucks, I've sharpened more than that off my old Delica over the years!
Just flip the clip and lower the ride a quarter inch or so, and I'll buy another one :D

I just measured the blade lenght when open on mine and it's at exactly 3". Why is this a problem?

I measured from the G10 to the tip of the blade. It's 3".
