Primble’s Oaks Derby - Preface and Rules for the Mystery Questions and Mystery Gift:

PREFACE

The Kentucky Derby is an annual event in Kentucky and many of us consider it our state festival of the year. There is way more to it than what many see on Saturday afternoon, on Derby Day. The celebrations usually begin in Lexington, earlier in the week, and continue on to Louisville. It is a draw for many famous celebrities, including movie stars, television stars, professional athletes, and of course, politicians.

As well as the horse racing, there are dinners, dances, and many many blowout parties, however, the big day is indeed Derby Day, where all roads lead to Churchill Downs, in Louisville, KY. The ladies, in their colorful, traditional and beautiful full length dresses and Derby hats, capture the day. The bold and brillant colors worn by the jockeys is also impressive. But, those beautiful and well groomed and fast horses, now that is what it is all about. ;)

Many of the questions surrounding the mystery will be about my lasting impressions from meeting and lingering with the famous, where circumstances caused me to spend a number of consecutive years on Millionaires Row, at the Kentucky Derby. I met many famous people and even chatted with them, throughout the days. The large majority of them were easy to talk to and very kind. It was always a relaxed atmosphere there, which surprised me the first year I attended. I am afraid that I have forgotten some of them - it was quite a few years back. The famous that I remember most were also the nicest.

During those years I attended, it was very enjoyable, but, I was not all that fond of parties and large gatherings. It took me years to finally conclude that those times were a very special time in my life, indeed a treat to me, especially because I was no where close to a millionaire, nor rich, nor famous. I think most anyone would cherish those times, as they look back on their life. Not like your children, but, cherish, none the less.

To elaborate on question # 7, during one year I attended the derby, I had been going back and forth to the betting windows and it was a pretty long walk. I had stayed up late the night before. I was about gassed, at an hour before the actual derby. I sat at a table near the back.

As I was about to nod off, someone had sat down in the chair behind me and started shaking my left shoulder. I turned to see who it could be. He was an elderly man and was smiling at me. He had a crumpled old program, which he must have been carrying all day. He said to me, "Young man, if I can stay awake, you most certainly look able to and I was afraid you were going to nod off and miss the Derby". After I got over my shock of his position, my sleepiness vanished. I spent some time with him, going over his picks on his crumpled old program. That encounter was most memorable.

Every year now, on Derby Day, I watch on television, but, reflect back to the years I fondly remember, attending. I have aged and so have the people I met. I expect many of the celebrities I met, now watch on television, as well, and probably reflect back as I do. Some of them have passed on to greener pastures.

Many of the questions here were derived from my Derby experiences and others questions from sports figures or teams which I do or have like(d).

The Rules

All clues are given in this thread, however, you can use search engines to speed up your answers. The reason that I picked my derby impressions is because the search engines won’t help you completely solve the mystery questions. For questions that are two part, your answer should be separated by a comma. Here is the format to use to answer all questions - these are for question numbers 2 and 3:

2. Joe Theismann, Washington Redskins (not the correct answer)
3. Babe Ruth, Brooklyn Dodgers (not the correct answer)

You must enter the question numbers beside your answers.

If I were any of you, I would keep all of my answers to myself until I was ready to submit them, then all at once. Keep the answers on your computers notepad or word processor and then copy them to the thread, once you are finished. Once you feel like you might have all the questions right, post them in order. Remember that when you post your answers, if they are not all correct, you may be suppling the missing answer for another contestant. I will check progress every so often and see if anyone has won. If so, I will post who won immediately, as soon as I see it. The game ends this Sunday at 4:00 p.m., EST, if it lasts that long. If nobody has all the answers, then the one with the most correct answers wins. In the event of a tie, I will randomly draw from the tied names.

If you get frustrated and think it is not worth a free knife, just quit.

You can enter your answers as many times as you want.

The mystery contest is only open to members with more than 200 posts in the traditional knife forum. PLEASE DO NOT POST ANSWERS IF YOU DO NOT QUALIFY.

The only prize open to members of 50 or more posts in Traditionals is the 3rd prize drawing.

Questions will follow, this afternoon.

Good luck everyone. Go eat your lunch - for now. ;):D

Great photos! I'm late to the party and haven't had time to browse the entire thread so I'm not sure what this "question" thing is. I read the original post and decided to throw these in.

Mystery questions in fifteen minutes.

Mystery Questions:

1. He hailed from Arkansas, led two different SEC football schools to an SEC Championship, and wore a now famous hat. He had a nickname and it was given in the thread as a hidden clue. Who was this man and what was his nickname?

2. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and later was a member of at least two Superbowl winning teams. I met him at the derby one year and he left a memorable impression. His uniform number was given as a clue. He also had a physical impairment, which was never apparent, yet, similar to a few others like him, on this very forum. What was his name and who did he play for?

3. He was a wonderful MLB baseball player. His life was cut short. He was respected by many. There is an award given every year, in his honor. A hidden clue was given in the thread that disclosed the location where he played. Who was this man and what team did he play for? (all seasons for the same team)

4. In one of my posts, I posted a picture and later described a building. Where was the material gathered to build this wonderful structure?

5. I have lived in Kentucky all my life. I attended how many Kentucky Derbies during my lifetime, which turned out to be consecutive years? A clue was given.

6. She was a famous singer with a rarely used first name. I was pleased to make her acquaintance at a Derby. She was very mannerly and she also starred in movies. Who is this kind and lovely lady? A clue was given.

7. This man was involved in politics. I credit him for keeping me from missing out on the run for the roses, on one derby that I attended. What was his name and what was his highest rank (twice) in politics? Multiple clues and quotes were given.

8. Another famous singer that I encountered. I found him to be a really good guy. A clue was given and this one should be so easy. What was his name and who was his wife, at the time he died? She attended the derby with him.

9. She was a very famous television star and wore a uniform of three colors. In her day, she has been described as the most beautiful woman on earth. Who was she and what was her main credit/or role, as a television star? I found her to be one of the nicest of all celebrities, which I encountered. A clue was given, and another hidden clue revealed her last name.

10. Since this thread invloves being proud of you home area, this thread would not be complete without me mentioning the University of Kentucky basketball program. I have been a UK basketball fan for many many years. To many that live here, the teams are the pride of the state. I gave a hidden clue to the answer for this question. What nickname has been given to the fans of the U.K. basketball program?

11. Somewhere in this thread, I mentioned two other well respected college basketball teams. It was a tip of the hat to other great programs. What were the two teams I mentioned?

12. When I was a young man and in the time period of the 1960’s, I had two favorite MLB teams. One was the Cincinnati Reds in the National League and another in the American League. Name the American League team? A hidden photo clue was given.

13. The Kentucky Derby runs in which season of every year? What breed are the horses that run for the roses? A clue was given.

14. What horse holds the fastest track record for the Kentucky Derby? A hidden clue was given.

15. During one 1980‘s derby, which I attended, I was seated next to a famous jockey’s wife. She was very nice and she supplied me with betting tips. I left the derby with full pockets, and I don’t mean my pocket knives. Her first name was Cindy and she also told me not to bet on her husband’s horse for the actual derby race. That was about the only wrong tip she gave me all day, as her husband’s horse did indeed win the Run for the Roses! She was so excited, jumping up and down and nearly beat me half to death, then exclaimed “Please help me to winners circle”. As we were quite a few levels up, and the crowd so thick, the task seemed impossible, but, I did push and shove our way down and I continued to escort her across the track and to the winners circle, just as the mantle of roses were being draped over the horse. Who was her husband and what was the name of the derby winning horse? (There was an uproar over this same horse, not associated with the win, and years later) Clue was given, maybe google for the horse, if you know the jockey.

16. During my years of attending the derby row, I met three United States Presidents. One of them was not so popular. Who was the least popular one and this was one of his quotes? : "If you fear making anyone mad, then you ultimately probe for the lowest common denominator of human achievement.” A hidden clue was given of his last name and a given clue was also provided.

Friday’s extra questions: If you attempt to solve the mystery today, then I made the clues too good or the questions too easy. If you post your answers before midnight tonight, you must answer these questions to solve the mystery completely. Beginning Saturday morning, you may disregard questions 17 and 18.

17. In my opening of this thread, I showed my favorite knife, but, there was another knife shown in the thread that I would say is one of my favorite knives. What was that knife specifically?

18. Who was the third President, where no questions were asked about? You should know the time frame by now. He was Vice president when I met him.
