Primble’s Oaks Derby - Preface and Rules for the Mystery Questions and Mystery Gift:
PREFACE
The Kentucky Derby is an annual event in Kentucky and many of us consider it our state festival of the year. There is way more to it than what many see on Saturday afternoon, on Derby Day. The celebrations usually begin in Lexington, earlier in the week, and continue on to Louisville. It is a draw for many famous celebrities, including movie stars, television stars, professional athletes, and of course, politicians.
As well as the horse racing, there are dinners, dances, and many many blowout parties, however, the big day is indeed Derby Day, where all roads lead to Churchill Downs, in Louisville, KY. The ladies, in their colorful, traditional and beautiful full length dresses and Derby hats, capture the day. The bold and brillant colors worn by the jockeys is also impressive. But, those beautiful and well groomed and fast horses, now that is what it is all about.
Many of the questions surrounding the mystery will be about my lasting impressions from meeting and lingering with the famous, where circumstances caused me to spend a number of consecutive years on Millionaires Row, at the Kentucky Derby. I met many famous people and even chatted with them, throughout the days. The large majority of them were easy to talk to and very kind. It was always a relaxed atmosphere there, which surprised me the first year I attended. I am afraid that I have forgotten some of them - it was quite a few years back. The famous that I remember most were also the nicest.
During those years I attended, it was very enjoyable, but, I was not all that fond of parties and large gatherings. It took me years to finally conclude that those times were a very special time in my life, indeed a treat to me, especially because I was no where close to a millionaire, nor rich, nor famous. I think most anyone would cherish those times, as they look back on their life. Not like your children, but, cherish, none the less.
To elaborate on question # 7, during one year I attended the derby, I had been going back and forth to the betting windows and it was a pretty long walk. I had stayed up late the night before. I was about gassed, at an hour before the actual derby. I sat at a table near the back.
As I was about to nod off, someone had sat down in the chair behind me and started shaking my left shoulder. I turned to see who it could be. He was an elderly man and was smiling at me. He had a crumpled old program, which he must have been carrying all day. He said to me, "Young man, if I can stay awake, you most certainly look able to and I was afraid you were going to nod off and miss the Derby". After I got over my shock of his position, my sleepiness vanished. I spent some time with him, going over his picks on his crumpled old program. That encounter was most memorable.
Every year now, on Derby Day, I watch on television, but, reflect back to the years I fondly remember, attending. I have aged and so have the people I met. I expect many of the celebrities I met, now watch on television, as well, and probably reflect back as I do. Some of them have passed on to greener pastures.
Many of the questions here were derived from my Derby experiences and others questions from sports figures or teams which I do or have like(d).
The Rules
All clues are given in this thread, however, you can use search engines to speed up your answers. The reason that I picked my derby impressions is because the search engines won’t help you completely solve the mystery questions. For questions that are two part, your answer should be separated by a comma. Here is the format to use to answer all questions - these are for question numbers 2 and 3:
2. Joe Theismann, Washington Redskins (not the correct answer)
3. Babe Ruth, Brooklyn Dodgers (not the correct answer)
You must enter the question numbers beside your answers.
If I were any of you, I would keep all of my answers to myself until I was ready to submit them, then all at once. Keep the answers on your computers notepad or word processor and then copy them to the thread, once you are finished. Once you feel like you might have all the questions right, post them in order. Remember that when you post your answers, if they are not all correct, you may be suppling the missing answer for another contestant. I will check progress every so often and see if anyone has won. If so, I will post who won immediately, as soon as I see it. The game ends this Sunday at 4:00 p.m., EST, if it lasts that long. If nobody has all the answers, then the one with the most correct answers wins. In the event of a tie, I will randomly draw from the tied names.
If you get frustrated and think it is not worth a free knife, just quit.
You can enter your answers as many times as you want.
The mystery contest is only open to members with more than 200 posts in the traditional knife forum. PLEASE DO NOT POST ANSWERS IF YOU DO NOT QUALIFY.
The only prize open to members of 50 or more posts in Traditionals is the 3rd prize drawing.
Questions will follow, this afternoon.
Good luck everyone. Go eat your lunch - for now.
