Product or Prototype?

So, let me see if I have this correct. You just joined this board, have ten posts, and you're saying that someone in good standing, who's been a (contributing AND paying) member of this board for like, a decade and who has thousands of posts is trolling?

Really?

His low post count doesn't detract from his correct observation. The OP by labeling the award incorrectly intended to troll for support on his position on the subject. He should be disciplined.

It's not a correct observation, sorry. In fact, it's really getting old how people become big crybabies every time there's someone posting an idea they don't like. Crying "Troll!!" usually actually means "I don't like the idea you are presenting, and I want you to stop talking and go away!!".

It's pathetic and puerile. Rather like saying that because the OP has incorrectly stated the name of some award, that it invalidates his whole point. Also, he should be disciplined? What? Over making a thread with a possibly unpopular opinion? Well, I don't like you posting, so maybe YOU should be disciplined. See how that works? In any case, yours is an amusing post, coming from someone with a peace symbol as their avatar.

Was there anything else you wanted to add?

. Was there anything else you wanted to add?

Yes. I have been attacked even though I quoted you in a neutral way. I am unaffected though such is common on the internet.

Back on topic, the award and its rules are not something we can influence. The knives are usually prototypes and don't have to be produced at any time. While they are usually produced (in limited numbers usually) they don't have to ever come to market, they are there to show what a company can do.

For me what really gets old is how threads suddenly become all about the OP. Really doesn't matter what the original point of the thread was.

Kai is probably my favorite production company right now. Huge fan. And I don't even necessarily completely agree with the OP (In fact I think someone posted the correct name of the award, which presents no conflict as far as I can recall) and part of his point is based on, I think, this misinformation. Having said that, I get tired of how these threads become all about who the OP is.

I don't know how much posting the OP has done on Kai in general, some people here say a lot, some people say he wouldn't say anything like this about another company. I find that hard to believe and I really don't know or care.... Huge fan of Kai/ZT/Kershaw... but I am annoyed how many people feel like they have been personally attacked by threads like this. As a fan I don't feel attacked and, it seems, neither does Kai. They probably couldn't care less.

I have not attacked you directly, please stop making incorrect comments. I'd appreciate it.

I took issue with your comments where you were supporting a 10 post count person incorrectly labeling a longstanding member as a troll, and then stating that he needed to be disciplined. I then made some comments concerning people who believe that this forum should be censoring other members for stating ideas or positions that they don't like or agree with.

Guess what? It's a great big world out there, and there will always be people who believe or view things in a manner you don't like. That doesn't make them trolls, and it damn sure doesn't mean "they should be disciplined".

Travesty is a nice way to say it. If I win an award for making the best product of the year but I can't deliver it and you can't buy it, what would you call it?

Much ado about nothing.

So they win the award in 2014.

Pole vaulting over mouse droppings.

Your mileage may vary.

I can't wait for the 454!

Pardon me, please move over so I have a place to sit down. I'm in the same boat with you. I LOVE KAI/ZT products. In fact, they and Spyderco are my two favorite knife-companies overall. That said, I am rather indifferent to the OP's position, because I don't really care one way or the other who wins this award being talked about. I am a member of this forum, so pretty much all of my exposure to new knives happens here. Also like you, I don't understand people who totally flip out whenever their favorite companies are questioned, or receive criticism.

Speaking of pole vaulting, let's keep things light and all be friends. Remember why we're here folks.

I used to feel this way about my favorite TV shows and movies. If they got a lot of criticism I felt such a need to defend them. Don't know why. I guess I felt that if movies I liked were attacked, they must see me as a fan of said movie to be stupid. Or something. In the end, I decided, so what? I rarely visit any forums besides BF.com and I don't really spend a lot of time on the internet talking about my interests. I have and like what I like, and I know I'm at least average in terms of smart. I love good literature and foreign movies and good (and also cheap) knives. In the end it doesn't really matter if people see me as stupid for it. And I bet it doesn't matter to Kai if they see a few threads like this.

By the way +1 on your choices, in addition to Kai/Kershaw, Spyderco is way up there for me too.

Would ABSURD work better? And yes, this thread will probably end up in W&C at some point. But I expect that as people who can't argue the message invariably attack the messenger.

Carry on. :)

You're already well on the way to fitting in in W&C, given that you invoked the "attack the messenger" card.

No one is attacking you; they are objecting to the patently obvious nature of the offense that you are taking, which is WAY out of proportion to anything given. Stabman is right...."travesty"? "Unfair"? "Disrespectful"? That is ridiculous and way over the top; and it undermines your at-best nominally valid point.

This is not about any knifemaker or Blade.....they are private companies and they can do what they want. They don't owe anyone anything beyond the standard rules of commerce and fair exchange. They can establish their own competitions and standards and run them any way they choose. The original "point" of this thread can be condensed down to "why does a knife win a production award in a year it is not in production?" Sure, it's a fair question on the surface; but it was presented terribly ("Travesty"? "Unfair"? "Disrespectful"?.......Really?); and it was already addressed in a number of ways prior to the irrelevant and evasive invoking of the ATM card.

BLD522....did you confirm the correct name of the award? Have you confirmed with Blade Magazine on what criteria they judge the award? That would seem to be a good idea, given that it's their award, don't you think? Isn't it better to go straight to the source, rather than begin a discussion, the result of which has been preordained by you prior to you making your first point?

I agree with the people saying that as a "travesty" the OP is overreacting a bit to what he considers a sleight...

Having said that, if we really follow that logic, the amount of stuff being dumped on him for it, considering how small his complaint is, is also WAY over the top. What's happening here is more appropriate as a reaction to a "I just found out all their knives are secretly 440A steel" claim. Just sayin'.

Disclaimer: Just in case it isn't clear, my "440A" example was just that, an example. Cheers. ;)

I like how you didn't even read most of this thread. Other people made better points.

Also, this whole "product" argument no sense. The OP seems to have convinced a few people (initially himself) that assigning a narrowly convenient meaning to the word is evidence of sketchy practices. It's disappointing how easily people's B.S. detectors are led astray when someone pretends to be offering some backhanded, pseudo-constructive criticism.

I did read the whole thread. I am not attacking ZT, they make killer products (my new 700 continues proving that claim), in fact I love them to death. That doesn't mean that they get a pass on breaking common sense. I can live with the long waits for a knife to come out, I know new products take time and switching machines over to a whole new product is not easy... That doesn't give them a pass on vocabulary. Feel free to rag on my use of hyperbole (it was intended to be ridiculous), my point still stands that if you give awards for products that don't really exist that year then you may as well take the year out of the equation, and give awards to any product of any time.

All it takes for the dictionary to be killed is for men to do nothing as it is being attacked. I will stand up for the right of definitions to be unassaulted and undefiled!

I am a huge defender of the rights of the dictionary. If you were a woman I'd ask for tasteful photos.

The award isn't really relevant to any consumers since it's not out yet - both Blade, and Kai, would probably have more to gain by giving the award to a/winning the award for a knife that's already out and available. Kai might get more sales and attention, and Blade would be talking about a knife that consumers can actually buy.

Can custom makers submit one of their one off knives for the "Overall Knife Of the Year" award? Or is it production knives only? My impression is that the prestige of this award is related to the fact that a company is able to mass produce these knives.
