How To Put an End to the F&F and +% in the exchange.

WOW I had no idea this was such a point of contention until it happened to me yesterday. It was my fault, I made no mention of additional fees in my ad, but that's just how I thought business was done.

EVERYTHING I've bought from a seller here on BF or on any other venue has made me add 3% for goods and services. Which I really never have minded paying- It is a tax for using their services and gives you protection.

Now that I know it bothers so many people then I'll end the practice as well.. That's all I ever knew was to charge the 3% which is why it started in the first place.

The one time I bought a knife 'net to me' was a $50 knife my son really wanted.
Had no clue, so sent $51.50. Got an e mail from the seller demanding an additional $0.29.
Politely asked for a refund and will never do that again.
List one price.

 :D Had this happen too. I didn't factor the PP fee for the shipping costs so I owed the guy less than 20¢. He was quite insistent and with an attitude . As I recall I went through with the transaction but even as I was laughing about the absurdity I was putting the guy on my ignore list. Oh well...

I'd love to know how someone actually has the balls to demand an additional $0.29 Ray!
Annoyed me to no end!
Ugh

This is ridiculous.

So some potential buyers think its great if a seller says "the price is $103 with free shipping and I'll eat the Paypal fee", but they get their panties bunched up if the seller says "the price is $100 with free shipping; please at 3% for Paypal".

Newsflash: $103 = $103. Its same dang price!

This just demonstrates how kooky the human mind can be, and why ad agencies and marketing are so effective. Its the same price either way. But say it one way, and the buyer thinks he got a great deal. Say the other way, its he is incensed! Them is fightin' words!

Sweet Mother of Pearl. This is probably the dumbest thing that ever pops up on BF. Second dumbest is "two is one and one is none" - which is self-stultifying - but that's for another thread. Honorable mention for dumb goes to 1) those stupid paracord bracelets that guys wear solely to make themselves look outdoorsy, and 2) SOS modes on lights (that no one in the history of mankind has ever used). I could go on, but someone might get grumpy.

Moderators: please place this post in the BF Hall of Fame, along with all of my other posts. Thanks.

Usually the folks fine with gift stay out of these threads. Thank you for pointing yourself out. And I've used a paracord bracelet in the outdoors when nothing else was available.

I'm starting to come around to the idea of an automatic ban for mentioning gift or net or whatever. Or maybe a one warming system. It is still work for mods but anything else I think would be a lot more work for mods which I don't think would be a good thing.

If I may suggest to organise the whole sale including the pay pal matter... for example when someone wants to sell a knife, and press the new sale button a template will pop up and he have only to fill the blanks

Model:
Maker:
Country of origin:
Blade steel
Blade shape:
Blade finish:
Liners:
Scales:
Scale finish: N/A if not applicable.
Condition : example BNIB or LNIB.
Remarks: example... first owner , lightly used, scratches on blade...etc
Shipping Method:
International Shipping: YES or NO with remarks such as YES for added price

Price: $$$US
With a note at the end of the sale thread stating that the price mentioned is inclusive or all in or goods and services...etc. with no charges added

Man, I would just put something like this in my signature if I wasn't already at the character limit.

To be honest, you've had several knives for sale I considered purchasing over the past few months; but I closed the ads because of that. (It is rare for me to contact sellers with terms I don't accept...it usually has to be something I REALLY want, or can't find elsewhere)

Thanks for the heads up. I really didn't know it was so offensive since it seemed to be the norm. But I'm with you guys on this one, and have adjusted my ads accordingly. Thanks for your feedback.

Thus spake PayPal:
Payments received in your Account may be reversed at a later time, for example, if a payment is subject to a Chargeback, Reversal, Claim or is otherwise invalidated. This means that a payment may be reversed from your Account after you have provided the sender the goods or services that were purchased.
[emphasis added]

3.4 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method without our prior written consent. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions.
[Get it? It violates PP Terms of Service to add anything separately for the PayPal fee. That makes it an "invalid payment." See above.]

It amazes me that many people here can actually argue this point!
The amount of money we're talking about is quite inconsequential. Is a couple of bucks really worth losing a sale over for the seller??? Is saving a couple bucks really worth giving up PP protection for the buyer??

Were I "Spark For A Day," this is what you'd be reading: Enough's enough. Henceforth, and forever more, it shall be a 50 point infraction for any seller in the Exchange to offer to accept PayPal F&F, to advertise "Net to Me" as a part of the payment agreement, or to attempt to circumvent this rule by way of "offline" communications with potential buyers. Any sale conducted through the exchange will include all fees, shipping, insurance, or any other cost, in the advertised price - period. You've been warned.

I tend to agree now but it would still be a pain for the mods. People don't read the damn rules we have now and are too stupid to protect themselves by acting like adults. The ones who we see getting screwed would keep doing it and the sellers who justify gift will find a way around it. More work! I don't know what the solution is but I know the problem doesn't impact me. I never pay gift.

Is there a way with the new software to at the top of every sales thread post a warning about using gift?

I know what you're saying Cray.......the long timers won't get shafted by it, but I see lots of new guys falling in the FF hole.
You're also right about no one reading the rules. Although most are just common sense.
Is the problem sellers asking for fees don't know?? Or can they truly be that petty??

Now that we can easily snoop everyone's profile messages, I noticed that sometimes it's the BUYER who asks if the seller will accept F&F, I guess just to save themselves that extra $10 or 15.

I suppose those who don't want to pay any extra fees at all can just send cash in envelopes in the mail, or use personal checks. Then they could assume the full risk of loss or fraud themselves, versus using a service where someone protects you from all of that (for a fee, of course).

Cashier's checks, postal money orders, and registered mail could mitigate some of the risks, though even the post office charges a fee for money orders, and registered mail isn't free either.

Looks like there's no safe way to move money around without having a trusted 3rd party in the middle of it and having to pay someone for that service.

Well, sort of. Buy local, Brick and Mortar.
Pay premium and support local businesses.

 What does this mean? Are PMs (conversations) no longer PRIVATE? I have not noticed. How does that work?

SORRY to sidetrack this thread but this bit of news seems important TOO! Thanks for filling me in.

Ray

Privates Messages are now called "Conversations" and are still private. Profile Messages (the current version of the old Visitor Messages) are visible to anyone and anyone can post a new on on your profile, unless you go into your settings and lock them down. Visitor Messages were too, but you had to dig a little.

Now there is box on the main screen that takes you right there, and even shows you the most recent ones posted whether you were interested in seeing them or not.

Go look - it's the "New Profile Posts" list on the right side of the screen when you are at the Forums main page. That's what I meant by "easier".
