Queens #99 Scout knife...

Not to take this thread off track but this is happening a lot. Ive read a few getting sidetacked coming out of Portland. Mine took 7 days to pop back up on radar.

At least that gives me hope it will.:D Although, with all the issues I'm reading about, I might be very disappointed. Some of these issues are not sounding good for Queen.

This thread has taken a very disappointing turn. I have been buying a lot of Queens this year, and have been happy with their quality. I really was convinced that they had finally put these issues to rest and were moving forward into the realm of GEC. Looks like this run of scouts is right back where they were, as far as QC being hit or miss. I'm wondering if it's something specific with this pattern or if they have let things slip with the latest runs across other patterns as well. I guess we'll see once more people get the 48 whittlers in their hands.

I'd hate to see that. I really would like Queen to get it together. The more quality knives to have available is better for everybody. Keeps pirces in check (hopefully) and keeps other makers on their toes. Come on Queen, we're rooting for you.

My ~15-year-old #48 Whittler in cocobolo is in a few of my pics in the preceding posts -- that knife is a flawless tank.* I hope Queen can still crank some out like that.

*Other than coming from the factory fairly dull, but for a user that's really not a big issue at all.

Good post. I couldn't agree more and I know that they can do it. I honestly believe that they will too. Unfortunately, it takes things like this to help them see where improvements are needed.

I don't know Ken Daniels but I do have a fair amount of respect for him. If I remember correctly, he was one of the guys that started up Great Eastern Cutlery. I think it's pretty safe to say that Ken is passionate about this. He wouldn't have taken on this challenge if he wasn't. When he finally does get Queen turned around we will all have some fantastic knives at our disposal and Ken will be nothing short of a hero.

Queen already puts out a great knife. They just don't do it consistently and that's a pretty big problem. Ken will get this all straightened out. I just know it.

Here is my Scout. All pictures.

Only the can opener and cap lifter rub a little.

Ordered one of these for myself for my birthday last week. Here it is next to my other Scout knife (a Camillus, which coincidentally has a date stamp of my birth year).

Wow, I was really wanting one of these as well. not so sure now. I may just stick with the Case Scouts. But in Buffalo Horns defense (and I have a lot of them) they usually aren't smooth and there is usually a lot of inconsistencies in the Horn.

Mine came in less than a week F&F great, blade very sharp, opening the blade and tools gritty but I'm working on that.

My stag bone scout arrived today. The bone covers and their fitting to the bolsters is excellent. The fitting of the bail is very well done also. Only a couple tiny hints of daylight through the brass liners. Perfectly acceptable. The main blade and can opener arrived unexpectedly sharp. The grinds are all pretty good.

The only rub between the blades is where the main blade rubs the awl. It marks the blade quite a bit, but it's a pretty tight fit where the main blade sits. Chances are, it's going to rub the awl or the can opener unless the fit is absolutely perfect.

The worst of the knife is at the pivot. The blades are very roughly finished near the pivot. Rough finish. Scratch marks. Feels gritty opening the tools, instead of buttery smooth. A great job was not done in that aspect, but time and use will smooth out the action.

Overall, mine is a good scout. Not great. Not $100.00 worthy, IMHO, but still a good usable pocket knife with great steel. If Queen had gone the extra on the blade finish, it would be a legendary scout knife in almost all respects. There's room for improvement here, but I'm pleasantly satisfied with my knife.

Unfortunately, I wasn't as lucky with a buffalo horn Mountain Man lockback that I also ordered. I have strong man hands, and even I have to use both thumbs to press down the lock bar to disengage it. It is crazy hard to unlock. It's not gritty or unlubricated. It's a fit issue of some sort. Does anybody know what I'd file down to fix a fit issue like this?

I had a similar problem with one of my Mudbugs. It was crazy stiff. Oil and constant use fixed it within a couple weeks. Might be the same with The Mountain Man

Coincidence?... Maybe. about 4hrs after I file a "no delivery form" online with USPS, my package shows up delivered to Orlando (which is about an hour away). As, you may recall it hasn't been seen since 6-13-15. Anyway, they say it should be delivered today. Hopefully, I'll finally get to see for myself what this knife is all about.

Double Darn it. For $100 I was hoping for a really nice Scout. It sure sounds like it's hit or miss on the quality being put out by Queen. I hope that
Mr Daniels reads this and they do something about the troubles that are causing these complaints.

I'm just going to sit back and wait, maybe later in the year I'll be able to get a nice one.

Tom

EDIT: It's not like I need another Scout in my collection of traditional knives.
