Rambo V

Once again, this is false. I am currently serving at a USSOCOM unit with qualified Jumpmasters and a large number of both SOF and regular Airborne troops (multi services). There is no mention of knife sheath materials in the USASOC REG 350-2, Airborne Operations manual. In fact, the only place that a fixed blade knife is mentioned is under individual equipment:

"(c) A strobe light (night operations only) or service approved day/night dive flare and a sharpened, fixed-blade, sheath knife. The knife will be secured in its sheath to prevent loss during operations."

Having said that, I am talking with our senior Jumpmaster, this topic piqued his interest as well, in order to be completely thorough and to clarify whether this has ever been official policy.

I also want to add that I have in the past served as both a DZSO for US Navy airborne operations and a Safety swimmer for US Army Airborne ops overseas, the type of sheath for a knife was never specified.

Navman, thank you for the informative and current info on the matter. And thank you very much for your service!

I just looked through the FM's for Army Airborne operations, JMPI regulations/procedures, and Military Free Fall regulations and cannot find anything about knives or sheaths but I can find a lot about unit SOP's. I've worked with DoD's special kids on and off for years and some jump with small fixed blades tucked in various places but most don't, I have a feeling knives/sheaths are going to be up to the commander.

Exactly right. Unit SOP's and CO's discretion is usually the driving factor behind individual gear.

The first known Finnish emigrant Brita Matsdotter married Peter Rambo in 1647 at Wilmington, and she took name Brita Rambo. So, Rambo has Finnish bloodline and for that reason he should have a puukko. I was in the Finnish army in the time of the first Rambo movie. Finnish soldiers buy their own knives and they can select the knife model freely. Rambo's big knife was impressive and we nearly bought Rombo knives. However, it is difficult to break tradition and we acquired puukkos, which is the traditionall knife of Finnish army. Here is a picture of Finnish WW2 soldier who has two puukkos, front and back side. Perhaps Rambo should have two puukkos.

Yes, he needs two knives.

In Rambo 2, he carried four knives. :)

I cannot find the reference about not Jumping Leather sheaths. I remember it as it annoyed me so much at the time, but then again that was in late 1990 or very early 1991, and was probably a SOCOM directive, not a regulation. I checked with a friend whose son is in the 82nd Airborne Division, and he also did not know of any regulation or directive forbidding jumping leather sheaths, so hopefully it was because smart folks decided it was not a necessary to prohibit jumping a perfectly serviceable leather sheath. At the risk of being banned for life, did Rambo ever use the saw on his Rambo 1 and II knives?

In Rambo 2, he is seen using the saw to "cut" through a barbed wire fence, although he is actually bending the wire back and forth to break it, not sawing.

As for Rambo 1, I've always imagined that he used the saw to cut the wood stakes for the trap. :)

And yes, I've reported your post and you are being banned for life for not knowing. :D

well, I am in the second week of rehab from knee replacement, so if my wife will run a few errands I plan to watch the series again, and pay closer attention to details this time

Well, the Rambo V knife is already on eBay, thanks to our Chinese friends. Lucky for Sly, he can buy one for $43.31. :D

I think someone should test it out on KNIFE or DEATH, if it can pass the inspection to compete... o_O

I think the Case Peanut has been way too absent from action movies. Rambo deserves a Peanut, and we all deserve to see Rambo use a Peanut!
In the next one he smuggles one into the nursing home. When bully attendants abuse the elderly, patient Rambo uses a peanut to brutally impose justice.

What would make that scene even better is if the elder abusers all have Rambo knives! Haha.

Here’s a funny thing. I recently bought a Condor Kephart that came with a good quality brown leather sheath. The problem was, and this is apparently common to all Condor Kepharts, the sheath was not properly moulded to the knife and it had basically zero retention.

I often see such posted about the Condor sheaths. I find the Condor sheaths use inferior "leather" and that they suck. I end up buying replacement sheaths from LT Wright which are made by JRE Industries.
