RAT + gear (Here lies great links)

That Marlin might have to do if Springfield Armory doesn't remove its head from its colon. :D

As for the M6, I'd rather have it in .22LR/.410, but one cannot be picky. I wonder if they make one of the old shell shrinkers in .22 Hornet to .22LR, I know it is centerfire to rimfire but I'm pretty sure they had that covered with some type of mechanism in the base of the shrinker.

I would like to get one of them. :)

Thanks for the info on the Tac-Ties as well.

Me too, or better yet .22 mag to have nearly the performance of the hornet at about a third the cost. Last week I saw a box of .22 hornet priced at $50. A dollar a shot, even in a survival situation a person would be thinking "do I really wanna take the shot".:D

I'd just like to get my hands on the simple .22LR/.410 M6 Scout, I find that to be particularly well-suited for my requirements for banging around in the mountains...unless we're in bear country in which case I would love to have a Brockman Custom Marlin .45-70, but that's another story... :)

I can understand you not wanting to go with the Papoose, my favorite feature of the M6 is the 410 shotgun. I've only used the 22 hornet once, the rest of the times it was the 410 and it did the job.

Any reason you carry Pentagonlight over Surefire? Usually Surefire gets top billing when it comes to lights!

+1 for the Carhartt comments...I recently retired my decaying leather jacket and got a Carhartt coat..it's excellent.

+1 on the pentagon lights...They are great little lights...I love the angled head and the clip, the red lens on the bottom and compass are great little extras. At least the red lens is included and doesn't cost an extra 25$.

This isn't a review, just a quick assessment.
I just received my Lansky Deluxe Diamond Sharpening System and so far I'm not very impressed. The finest diamond hone seems too course and it's very difficult to lock the knife into the "Patented, precision-engineered, multi-angle, flip-over knife clamp" so it doesn't fall out.

It has it's moments but I don't think it compares to Spyderco Sharpmaker, which I luckily already had.

wait until you need a knife seriously re-profiled. Then you'll want that lansky. I use mine all the time and can get anything blistering sharp on it. Have you tightened the red screw AND the flathead screw towards the front?

I found them to be a pain in the ass. Using the oil, I also went to the ER one night after using the thing. Hahaha!

FREEHAND!!! LEARN!!! No contraptions in mountains, FREEHAND!

I read all the instructions and tightened the screws being careful to avoid gaps between the clamp and blade. Part of what I don't like, besides the clamp periodically letting go, is how aggressive even the fine stone is.

That was the conclusion I came to. I used to be fairly accurate free hand. Someone gave me one of the first ceramic stick setups years ago, it worked well and was easy so I drifted away from stones.

Regardless of the method that you prefer to use, everyone should know how to freehand at least passably well. What happens if you loose your field sharpener and just have stones lying around to use?

Take back the diamond set and get the deluxe regular stone kit. Its all I use and all I need. I'm not a fan of any diamond sharpeners.

I guess I'm not a diamond fan either, these diamond hones are too aggressive. I already used it so I wouldn't feel it was appropriate to try and return it. I'll just get the most use out of it that I can. I agree that it could be very useful for re-profiling a blade.

Same thing happened to me. I used to be able to put a blistering edge on just about anything freehand, but since I got my first pull through sharpener (for work, to make things faster) I've gotten away from stones. I've been trying to relearn for a little while, and it's amazing how difficult it is now. But I think freehand gives a better edge, so I'm gonna stick with it..... Hopefully it'll get easier again. :D

Diamonds are not too aggressive, some people are just too heavy handed. :D

That's a fact guys, it's not the diamonds, it's you. There is nothing wrong with that per se, just don't blame the diamond hones, it's sort of like bitching about a GT Mustang being too fast because you have a lead foot. :D

I loooooove diamond stones. They cut nice and fast and take the pain out of sharpening super hard steels. Easy to clean, too! ;)

I am not a fan of the diamond sharpeners either. Taking off metal fast is great in certain situations, but i definatly wouldn't have one as my "only" knife sharpener.

Has anyone dealt with tru-spec mil-spec packs? I just bought a level III assault backpack in desert digital and i like how well built it is but i am a little worried about the webbing and the buckles. I hiked with it a little bit today and it held up great with me throwing it around a couple of times. I also like the water pouch hole. That combined with another molle attach water bag means i shouldn't get thirsty before my next stop. After i played around with it for a while i noticed the webbing trying to slide through the buckles when i wear/tug at the bag. Is there any way to counter act this? I ended up puttting the extra webbing back through the buckles so it loops in the opposite direction and it seems to have stopped it but is this normal?

NorCalMtn2 seems to be running around buying all the same gear I do... Love RAT, Maxpedition, Guyot, MSR, Eureka, etc. Here are some of my favorite pieces of kit. All tested and proven in tough conditions from +110 to -20 F:
