I have a Waki in Black canvas and one in Red/Black G10. The G10 balances better and feels better in the hand IMO.:thumbup: The G10 handles are more than worth the cost of upgrading.

I don't know if this will help Russel, but the only reason I didn't go for the Red/Black G-10 is because the extra $50 was something I just couldn't spend. If you got the dough, you should go for it. There are plenty of guys who have their Wakis in G-10 and I haven't read any complaints yet.

Thanks for the added info. I'm thinking I'll just save the money and stick with the BCM. It's what I know, and I don't want to take a risk on this blade and end up not liking the G10. :thumbup: If these are ever offered again, I'll pick up another in G10.
 
Okay, I just placed my order for the black blade and black G-10 handles. I had a hard time deciding between the black G-10 and the Black and Red G-10. Oh, the difficult decisions one must make when faced with so many awesome choices! :D
 
For me, I still can't decide between the $30 difference between the black micarta and G-10 handles.Are there any more differences.....Is one more durable ?
 
I like canvas better.
The only reason I would go with G10 would be for the color.Love the black-red.

It came down to the balance of the blade to me. It sounds like the G10 offers a little better balance/feel. I don't think you can honestly go wrong with either. The micarta does absorb moisture slightly and has a fabric feel to the grip. The price made me think twice, but the previous posting about the balance pushed me over the edge. ;)

"Better" balance is subjective. The G10 offers a slightly more handle-heavy balance.

Honestly, I feel almost no difference between the micarta and G10 in hands. The primary reason to choose G10 on this blade is appearance, and the primary reason to choose micarta is cost, IMHO.

If you had me do a blind test, holding the G10 in one hand and Micarta in the other, and I had to pick which was which, it would be difficult to do. I MIGHT be able to figure it out based on balance, but I'm not even sure of that.
 
Got the note from the mailman that I missed my Waki yesterday and now it's locked in the post office until tomorrow-dammit. I'm thinking of breaking into the post office and taking my Waki. But I might be too tempted to take a couple more packages while I'm there.
 
Got my Waki's in yesterday and WOW!!! ...Just might have to order one more before they are all gone! :D:thumbup:

Sorry, no pix yet. It's so humid here today that my camera keeps foggin' up trying to take outdoor shots, grrr. :grumpy:

ETA: Because I'm still drooling over the looks of the Black and Red G10...still weighing the pros and cons.

ETA2: I just sent an email requesting a handle change to Black and Red G10, it's just too awesome. Made the final decision after searching for more pics here. I hope I didn't piss anyone off with the flakiness...:o.

Awesome, looking forward to it. Maybe if I get a windfall I can get a second strictly user-only waki, and keep this guy minty :D.
 
Man, this Waki is EXACTLY what I was looking for, for at least 2 years now:

-Shorter blade for tight spaces for home defense
-Short overall length for easy carry
-Tough blade to compensate for my horrible sword technique and just basic guy mistakes like accidentally hitting nails and such.
-Full tang. I hate the tapered tang in traditional katanas. I've read of too many times where the handles becomes loose or even the blade flies out on higher end swords.
-Light. I had a great Ko Katana from Dynasty Forge. It had most of the things I wanted in a sword, but the thing that kept running in the back of my mind was the heft. They made the blade extra thick to make it extra tough, but it became too heavy for my liking. (aside from that, the sword was outstanding. A stronger guy might not be bothered by it, it weighed 2.8lbs. Compare that to the 1.8lb Waki). This blade is about as perfectly weighted as I could ask.
-G-10/Micarta handles: The traditional katana handles seem like they're made more from tradition than practicality when considering today's options.
-Flat/convexed ground.

I've been wanting a Criswell Katana for a couple of years now, particularly one of his wakizashis for the above reasons. And now I have an arguably tougher blade without the one thing I didn't like about the Criswells- the hollow ground blade. I couldn't ask for more.

I've got a pile of gatorade bottles waiting to be filled with water and then sacrificed to the Waki gods as soon as I get a free day. I expect lots and lots of fun will be had :D :D :D
