Schatt & Morgan Keystone Series #69 - Barlow ?

Same model of knife:

It's hard to see, but in the second photo it does show that the liner is pierced for the shield pin, and the hole is rather close to the hump in the backspring. I'm sold on the theory that the item in the original photo is the untrimmed shield pin.

Definitely confirms my suspicions of it being the threaded pin holding the shield in place.

Here is my proof:

This picture bothered me a little as I have paid fairly close attention to the shields on GEC knives. Confirmed with the factory that they only used this method the first year or so. For the last many years they have used shields w/pins that look, for the most part, like the hat pins that come with Genuine Stag models.

Did they mention why they used the threaded pins? That shield was definitely pinned to the liner and had no glue on it...

I don't think it was pinned per se; I think the threads were used to essentially "press" and bite into the liner causing a good bond. But it was improved upon later, so it may not have had optimal results.

On another related note, I have owned several knives with pin holes in the liners but no pinned shields. If someone has a Queen #9 I think that is one of them.

I love this thread. It shows all that is best about this forum. Kudos to all hands.

I agree!!

The best part is, it ain't over 'til it's over!!

I have negotiated said knife be shipped to Chez Charlie!;)

I received the knife back today and it is going off to Charlie. He and Mike will have to duke it out over the source. For my .02 worth, it is the pin on the back of the shield.

Wow. yeah after having looked at the OP's pic a bunch of times and hearing the sworn testimony of the OP it looks like its a shield pin. It just boggles the mind that they would put a liner on the knife that had a long threaded pin coming out its backside. My theory for how this happened is the original shield came loose during assembly and fell out and so they decided to put a new one in after assembly. This would explain why the pin wouldn't be filed flush. It looks like the bent pin was filed and bent down but not cut off?

Who's taking it apart? Maybe they can put it back together with a little embellishment or their own special touch. Polished out liners, maybe filed.......

Well, I'm really good at taking knives apart, and I will do so here. Like an autopsy!:D

I've been busy for the last two days and can't believe I missed this thread! Unwittingly, I already contributed, as the two victims that Esnyx showed are ones I sent to him to be re handled. Glad I could help!

Really curious to see how this all plays out!

BTW, regarding the black eye on Queen, both of those S&M's I sent to Evan had issues... one of the back springs was so much thicker than the blade that through the gap you could actually see the pivot pin inside the handle. One had major gaps in the handle and both had really poor edge grinds which will require some tlc, but fixable. At their price point, those problems are unacceptable.

I'm eagerly awaiting their return and will post pics in Evan's custom thread.... his preview pics look outta sight! I wouldn't hesitate to send him more projects.

Where's it at, Charlie?!? The anticipation is killing us! Let's see this thing's guts!!!

Yep! Need some pictures of the knife split open.

It needs to be put together again after the diagnosis as it seems to have become a forum heirloom. A piece of Blade Forums history!
