Dingus is a male Rhodesian Ridgeback (African Lion Dog). He currently weighs 100 lb, and can traverse 100 yds of rough ground in the blink of an eye.

When I fall behind Dingus posts himself on a high promintory to watch for my arrival. If he doesn't see me he fairly quickly he initiates a search. Sometimes I'll hide from him to see if he's paying attention; he never fails to find me within 30 seconds. Best trail companion I've ever had.

My little girl Kiera, Shelter dog who was abused when she was a puppy. She was and is extremely skiddish around other people. She's probably the runt of the litter at only about 40 lbs. She's such a good dog though, gets very protective of the house and has no fear of other animals, she chased a fox out of the yard the other day. She loves to swim in rivers, and I mean actually swim by going under the water, I've never seen anything like it before, she tries to scuba dive without any equipment it's cute.

Bonus pic of Kodiak and Kiera, Kodiak is a man cat, he's huge.

This little girl is Sally. She is two years old.

We adopted her on Saturday, seen here at a highway rest stop.

Sally is a sheltie, and she was found stranded with her sister and her puppy on top of some barrels. They were locked in a fenced-in area that was badly flooded, and the three dogs managed to get onto the barrels somehow to avoid drowning.

A neighbor spotted this, and realized the "owners" left them out there for at least two days. Sally, in particular, was badly sunburned. The neighbor contacted the police, who contacted animal rescue...who contacted Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue. They contacted us, knowing that we'd lost Lucy two years ago and were looking for another sheltie.

Sally has never had a family. She had never been in a house until ours. She does not even know how to walk up or down stairs--she is learning quickly, but still hops her butt independently of her front legs, and sometimes slides down. She does not know how to walk on a leash, does not know how to stay on sidewalks, and really doesn't know anything. This is all so confusing and scary to her.

But she is catching on that everything in her life is different now. She is sleeping near the air conditioning vents, getting clean water whenever she wants, and enjoying nice nutritious meals for the first time. She sleeps on a nice clean bed of fluffy fleece and flannel. She has also discovered tummy rubs while laying on the couch--she never imagined life could be like this!

Her sister still needs a lot of work: she has severe heartworms, but is responding. I understand that two separate families are interested in the sister (when she is cleared health-wise) and in the puppy. The puppy is weaned, but still needs lots of socialization. Sally might miss them, but she is quickly learning that in our house, she gets all the attention!

She is very frightened of doors because she cannot figure out how they work. She still flinches whenever someone stands up, but is slowly coming out of her shell. It'll be at least a month before she is confident enough to walk around the house by herself. She tends to hide in corners and under things, no doubt afraid that she'll wake up from this dream to be back on some barrels in deep water.

Anyway, I donated $250 to the rescue organization; they gave Sally all the medical treatment she needed, spayed her, checked her for diseases (she is in perfect shape, incredibly!), and gave her basic house training and obedience commands. They also determined she is not aggressive toward other animals, and in fact likes children.

In particular, she is drawn to my 4 year old boy. She is not at all frightened of him, and seems to brighten up when he comes into the room. He loves his "Miss Sally," and can usually be found hugging her. My thinking is that all the humans in her life were mean and nasty adults, and she's never seen a person his size before. She trusts him, and takes food and treats only from him. He already understands this special bond means he has some serious responsibilities, and is eager to make her happy.

She is our second rescue. At this point, I cannot envision *any other way* to obtain a dog. These are wonderful animals who are only now discovering happiness for the first time, and I am so grateful to the volunteers who rescued her and paid for everything out of their own pockets. Those are special people.
