Show us what's in your survival kit.

Yeah I am in big time need of a SAK or something of the like. Well, I'm off, be back monday. Wish me luck!

Hey guys, as you may know I am going on a hunting trip here in Michigan tomorrow and have put together a little survival kit that will go into my backpack. My main concerns will be water, fire, and shelter. Here is a pic of all the goods laid out. By the way, most of this stuff I found around the house.

9) RAT 3
10) Cotton balls with petroleum jelly and bic lighter

21) Medical supplies
22) 1 cup metal measuring cup for boiling H2O
23) Roll of duct tape
24) Several feet of braided string, extra pair of shoelaces, paracord, and twist-ties.

Not Shown: Nail clippers, floss, extra batteries, Remington 700 and Fatwood tinder and kindling wood. (Knives, flashlight, and compass will be on my person at all times) And sorry for the bad quality pic, it was taken with my cell phone.

What pack did you use?

This thread is a great source of things to consider for addition/substitution. (Why didn't I think of THAT?)

Countycomm.com
Theepicenter.com

Have lots of small stuff. The tubular Al whistle at EpiCenter (nice guy)(NOT the one with the space for ID) is really lound.

CountyComm firesteels seem pretty good. Lotsa sparks. Swedish.

Cuchuga, here's hoping you had a good time chasing the critters. Hope you were able to fill your freezer, or at least get some meat in.

What pack did you stuff your gear into?

This is my take on the "possibles bag" as carried by frontiersman. It provides a basic survival kit for use when on a day hike or could be kept in a vehicle. It's designed to help provide me with basic shelter, warmth, water, and food for two or three days. Aside from what's in the bag, I'll have a pocketknife or two on my person, along with a Photon Microlight and a lighter.

The bag I used is a an EOD Utility Bag or mine bag from Countycomm.com. Here's a look at the front of the bag:

eodbag-front.jpg

As you can see, the bag has rows of PALS webbing on the front (it's also on the bottom and back). Attached to the webbing I have a Maxpedition Mini Roly-Poly bag containing a 32 oz. Nalgene bottle of water, a Brunton compass in an old USGI pouch, an SO-LED light from Countycomm, a Maxpedition Grimlock carabiner, and a heavy duty contractor's garbage bag. The garbage bag is for use as an expedient shelter or poncho and attached with some paracord.

Here's the back:

eodbag-back.jpg

It's not very visible in the pic but I added a Maxpedition pad to the shoulder strap to help distribute the weight.

I've lashed a Frost's Mora Swedish Army knife to the PALS webbing using some paracord. Moras are great bush knives and very reasonably priced, under $15 each.

Next, a peek inside, and then a look at some of the contents:

eodbag-inside.jpg

eodbag-contents1.jpg

Left to right in the top row:
-Olicamp stainless steel cup (a 32 oz. Nalgene nests into it, but the cup won't quite fit into the water bottle pouch)
-Ziploc containing some paracord, flat pack duct tape, a P39 can opener, and several large safety pins
-Tobacco tin containing fatwood tinder and REI storm proof matches
-Esbit stove with hexamine fuel inside it

Middle row:
-Ziploc containing a basic first aid kit
-Ziploc containing Moleskine notebook and a pen
-Ziploc containing a bandana and some tissues

Bottom row:
-N95 mask
-Two light sticks
-Space blanket
-Task force 3xAAA LED flashlight in pouch

Here's a look into the tin:

fire-tin.jpg

It contains a pack of REI storm proof matches, the strikers from the match box, a couple pieces of cardboard from the box, and fatwood, both sticks and shavings. Fatwood, or pitchwood, is pine that is saturated with pitch (sap). It burns very hot and is easy to ignite, greatly assisting you in getting a fire going.

Here's the rest of the contents:

eodbag-contents2.jpg

-3600 calorie Mainstay ration bar pack
-Ziploc with some tea bags and boullion cubes
-Ziploc with water purfication tablets, a tealight candle, Swedish fire steel, and 35mm film container of cotton balls impregnated with petroleum jelly
-Pocket straight razor and Pocket SERE saw from Countycomm
-Whistle with a compass and thermometer

There is still some room left in the bag for me to pack a lunch and a spare pair of socks.

The EOD Utility bag is very well made. Likewise, the Maxpedition Roly-Poly pouch is quite well made and the MALICE clip attachment is secure.

This is not a comprehensive get home bag or bugout bag. Rather, it's intended for use on dayhikes or if for some reason I needed to grab something light and compact which could keep me going for a couple days.

Those EOD bags are very cool... wish County Comm would ship abroad (I like broads :D)

Tea bags are a good call... must add some to my kit. You should consider an Esbit stove and fuel tabs, just in case everything is wet and you can't get a fire going. You can at least get a hot brew going that way.

Did you have a look at the County Comm Bug-out Bag? Very nice item. You might want to upgrade at some point and give yourself a little room for expansion. I find myself constantly adding stuff to my BOB.

Good looking kit ya got there. Oddly enough I have virtually the exact same setup; From the coyote brown EOD bag, right down to a 1.5 qt pot with kit inside and my knife strapped to the outside. hehe  I put it together for much the same reason that you did, a small pack for short hikes or those that I take up to 3 days, without having to carry a heavy pack/load.
Still haven't had time to take pictures of it, but been meaning to post that and an itinerary for this thread :D

Look again. There's an Esbit stove with the hexamine fuel inside it in the back row of my 4th picture. ;)

Oddly enough I have virtually the exact same setup;

You are obviously a man of good taste and intelligence.

This is more or less the contents of of what I carry. Or items that I have on my belt or in my pockets when I set out for a day or two.

On my person:

8mm X 4in. ferrocerium rod and striker

In the bag:
1.5qrt. pot with lid

X-acto knife handle and blades(5 standard 5 various)
Spare batteries
Butterfly closures
Neosporin packets
Alcohol pads
Sterile gauze pad
Several bandages of assorted sizes
Medical tape
50' hank of polycord
50' hank of 650 cord
100'-200' of 550 cord
15' nylon rope

My solution for dayhikes and short jaunts away from civilization without carrying a full sized pack. :D

Well guys...no deer:(. I had a perfect shot at a big doe if I had the license for it.(she was about 30 yrds away) I called her in with a grunt call and then 10 min later a buck totally tricked me(newbie). Oh well, it was a blast.

Anyway, I just packed it into a small woodland camo Remmington backpack I saw at an outdoors shop for $20. Nothing special. I took that pack with me every time I went out hunting. Although I never needed it for survival most of the stuff in there came handy for camp chores. I would post a pic but am too tired.

The first fire I made at camp was with PJ cotton balls, birch bark, some fatwood, firesteel, and some dry weeds. It worked like a charm. The fatwood burned hot and for a pretty long time.

It sure is nice to be back:)

Brain, Knife, Fire makins, Water bottle and filter, smethin to eat, cordage, etc depending on conditions.

+1 on the G-2. I carry a G-2 Mini. Fits in my Maxpedition M-2 Waistpack without sticking out the bottom. I was always loosing the regular sized ones.

Nice set-up

Curious about the eye-lets. These would be used for snares, right..?

Any chance of a list to go with the pic?
