Show us what's in your survival kit.

I dont have a survival kit(stupid) yet but just found this cool item that will probably make its way in there when I do make one. My mom works at a doctors office and is always getting cheap office supplies(pens, tape dispensers, staplers, notebooks) from medical reps. This is something she brought home yesterday(4 of them) its got 10 colors of thread neatly wrapped, 10 needles, 2 buttons, and a safety pin. Not only will your stitches match your clothes, but the needles are already threaded for you.:D

Neat huh? Just figured I'd share.

Size: Its about 2.25in wide by 3in long and a little less than .25in high. All in a thin candy shell.

my packs are all very fluid, but I do have a couple of bags that are fairly set. the truck duffle has extra socks, mitts, skipants, hit-me vest, and fire extinguisher, all for any occasion, never know when plans might change.
My work backpack (mostly lunch kit) has a small fak in a straight wall nalgene jar (250ml), small bottle of tylenol, and burn gel, extra food: granola bars in case lunch gets forgotten about, pants.
I also keep my blackhawk E&E pouch which contains a couple of fire methods, a 1 liter stainless pot, more granola bars, and whatever random extra things get tossed in it.
I also keep my blackhawk BDU pocket pouch close by, it keeps my EDC stuff all in one place, Mini-mag with nite-ize LED, spare batteries, lighter, nitrile gloves, CPR mask, basic first aid stuff, pens, little zip ties, safety pins, and anything not jammed in my wallet.

My main day-hiker/ PSK is packed in a MEC "pulse" waist pack (10L) and is currently based on a MEC 1L kettle. It contains an assortment of fire, bigger FAK, good compass, food, and I've got a new GI surplus nylon poncho strapped on it using the compression straps and my SOG seal team elite MOLLE'd onto those, it disapears pretty well for a bigish knife. I've carried the pulse pack for 14+ hours per day this summer with 7kg+ and it shows no sign of wear and wears comfortably. I worked at a kids camp as part activity leader part medic, so it had to keep up with the kids, not me.
I have leatherman pulse any time I'm wearing pants, SOG trident or pentagon 2, and an opinel 7 carbon (in my lunch)
I don't have good lists because I change things around a lot, and some things I forget about (like the tarp and case of water behind the seat of my truck)
Where I live I would have plenty of warning of an emergency, so I would be able to select gear and a pack quickly depending on what was happening and the method of evac (truck, walking, group, individual)

some gear rotates around, such as:
MEC static climbing cord, various diameters 2mm, 3mm, 5mm
assorted nalgene water bottles
trail blazer saw, pocket chain saw
Magellan 315 GPS
Cobra GMRS radios
Micro pur tablets
MSR minworks filter
MSR whisperlite internationale (burns everything but melted yak butter according to the manual)

I am planning on adding at some point:
good breather mask with n95/ organic chem cartridges as the shortest notice threat is a gas well blowout which could cause massive chemical contamination. also plastic rainsuit/ civi NCB
KM match cases (thanks to BF threads), nothing beats a dry match when your hands are cold
small grundig hand crank radio (shortwave/am/fm)

kinda disorganized compared to most I know, but i don't follow the set it and leave it theory very well, I figure that if I use it all the time I'll keep track of what I need better, and so far that seems to be the case. there are too many variables for me to plan for, so I try to cover the most likely (snow storm/ vehicle trouble) and be aware of probabilities for other disasters. easier to plan for everything than pack for everything. and if TSHTF any two packs will have the basics covered by at least two methods.

1.fresnel lens-fire
2.150 mono filament(sp)test line(a lot)-fishing, traps, whatever
3.trip wire(a lot)-traps
4.Shred guard dental floss(can't believe I didn't see this on anyone's list)- anything
5. needles x 4
6. safety pin x 2
7. surgical blade
8. signal mirror
9. whistle
10. small bic lighter(ziptied to prevent leak)
11. spark-lite
12. tinder x 3
13. button compass
14. fishing kit(6 hooks various sizes mostly small, 2 small sinkers, 1 small fake bait)- wrapped in foil
16. zip ties x 2
17. all fits into small otter box a little thicker than a deckand a half of cards- very tough waterproof storage
18. 6" 550cord lanyard attached to case-un wrapped its about 5' strand x 2
19. Mini mag light, don't light protonsue to accidental discharge- will be replaced by mini solar powered led.
20. tek lok mounted to the back so it can be worn.
Need to add: tweezers, water tabs, small vial of deet, Bag, bandaids alcohol wipes.

I like this package because its tiny any pretty well rounded(I think). I keep this in my camping/shtf bag which has nice to have stuff like: hennessy hammock, poncho, fixed blade, headlamp, batteries, clothes, cateen, camelbak, recon sleeping system, extra loaded mags, blah blah blah. Like I said, nice to have stuff.

Funny, I've been trying to get a decent knife to my tiny survival case. It hit me today to bring he kit to a knife instead. So I'm going to take it out of the otter case, add a sharpener, wrap it in a bag, add space blanket, and mosquito headnet to the sheath of a strider.

A decent camping store is a good place to look, if you have one.

Thanks guys, this looks like a great place for me to start! I'm also looking forward to checking out some of the online stores to see where I can start purchasing these items on my own for my first kit.

Heres the last pic I took of one of my SAS tins.
Ive almost moved completely into BCB Mini Mess tins now & upgraded some components ("proper" paracord, better LED lights, New glowrings etc)

SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed!) My girlfriends pic as a sortof "morale booster", censored coz er...shes er... in the nuddy!!! (Blush!)

I've posted my PSK before, so I won't repost it here. For those that haven't seen it, it's here.

However, like Longbow50 posted a bit ago, I don't carry them most of the time, anymore, because I EDC a Buck Alpha Dorado, a Benchmade AFCK, a Vic Spirit, 5 or 6 6-foot lengths of 550, a Fox 40, a mag bar, a mini Bic in the new Zippo look-alike case, a Swedish fire steel, couple of firestraws, spare keys (van and apartment), Mini Mag with Nite Ize conversion and a Lee Valley LED Lenser (mini LED light), pain pills (in anticipation of the next wonderful kidney stone attack), Gravol.

So, I guess, in essence, I am a walking survival kit. The only really important thing I'm lacking is a pot to sterilize drinking water and for that, I'm waiting for the large Guyon stainless steel Nalgene-like drinking bottle(ordered 2 weeks ago).

Oh yes, I also was going to order a Stu Toffee set of dog tags but still haven't located a source.

Doc (walking along ignoring all the finger pointing )

Cuchuga - My dad has the entire bathroom cabinet stocked with those things. He goes on hundreds of business trips and always picks up a few because we always have camping trips and they are very handy. I might decide one day to send it out when they finally overflow.
Interesting that the name is "Cranbrook" thats a school down here.

Make your own Dog tags!!!! You wouldnt believe the hassle I got on another forum once for posting a slightly less censored pic of Tameras (my GF) photo on my dogtags.
I cant remember where I got the idea of a pic of a loved one for a survival kit, but it was somewhere on the internet.

Make your own Dog tags!!!!

Sure I can make my own dog tags, but you'll have to send me the picture. :D

That's why you come to this forum.

It's actually a really good idea.

I think it was whazzitsname...Tom Hanks on that survival movie Castaway. That picture of his GF he kept in the watch or locket to keep him sane and show off to Wilson. Of course Wilson left him and his GF was married with children when he got back. But he got the cool cowgirl at the end. :D

Not to sound full of myself, but I think Stu got that about the picture of a loved one idea from me. Of course, I did not originate that idea.

Stu, sorry if you felt we hassled you on that other forum; I thought it was just good natured ribbing.

Eastr77, I really like the look of that Spyderco forester - I was thinking of adding one to my kit recently.

Why so many knives??? Because we are knife nuts of course! You should see what I used to carry. Necessary? No. Fun? Hell yes!

There's a difference though between what goes into a 'survival pack' and what goes into a rucksack when I'm going hiking. The former is the essentials, the latter is the 'fun' part. As eastr77 said, his kit can be thinned down when appropriate.
