Spent the day out in the woods building a debris shelter with my 12 year old son. He brought his Case Jr. Sodbuster, so we took some shots.

the large navy blue workman, the case image, and the stag german bull brand are my most recent ones. if you couldn't tell i really have a thing for the case sodbusters. i have however found a kissing cranes brown mule, and a queen country cousin, but i am out of spending money for this week, so i'll just have to let you know when i get them in a week or two.

thanks
sam

the only thing that i have really seen is a few for sale, and i have been looking because i have been looking at the one i bought for a couple of months at one of my local stores and then i searched on the forum and found pictures of one that someone hear had and it appeared to be a solid little knife and the stag was decent, but it is also a 30 buck knife so it's not perfect. i just bought it today so i'll use it for a week and let you guys know what i think about it.

thanks

hey Dave

are there differences in the two? did case change finish/quality/edges in 30 years or are they "good the same"? I've read here very often that case knives from the 60-70's had a better finish thanthe current ones

thanks

In a nutshell, yes. There are some noticable differences. I'd stashed the 10-dot away for a long while after I bought it. And I actually bought the newer one some time after that. So, I didn't immediately notice all the differences until I was taking these pics, with the knives side-by-side.

The 1970 has a thicker blade. It's heavier enough, that a difference can be felt in the 'heft' of the knife. You might also see, in the one pic I've posted, the tang on the newer knife is longer (meaning the actual cutting edge is a bit shorter on the new one).

Blade thickness comparison (2009 at top, 1970 below):

Cutting edge length comparison:

I'd say the finish on the older knife is a bit more refined. I wouldn't quite call it 'polished', but it does seem to have more of a 'sheen' to the satin finish. It feels smoother than the new finish. I've also noticed this on older Case knives of other patterns (I have some mid-70s vintage Stockman (5347SS) and Folding Hunter (5265SS) knives that look about the same, in regard to the finish on the blades. Keep in mind, the old knife I've pictured (1970) is a carbon blade (not stainless). So, I can't really expect the finish to look exactly the same as with the newer, stainless version.

I'll add some pics to this post, a bit later, to illustrate some of these points. (Edit: pics added)

Carried a large SS Case Sodbuster over the weekend. Got some great use out of it. After cleaning it up, decided it would make a great gift. Gonna give that one away, and replace it with a CV model (although the SS one worked great).

hey dave, thanks for the post! thanks a lot

well you seem to confirm at least partially that those from the older era are slightly better than the current ones
I'll try to snag an old one, maybe...

request: anyone have an OLD Eye Brand small soddie to show? I have a recent one and would like to know if the older ones were different too

thanks
Maxx

i just picked up 3 more, bwahaha, and i have 2 more on the way.

i picked up a large kissing cranes brown mule, a yella queen country cousin in d2(man that is some hard steel), and a carl schielper large eye brand, i'll try my best to get some pictures tonight when i get home. i also have a large and small yella boker tree brand coming my way, should be here by the end of the week. wooohooo, i'm broke again, and i couldn't be happier about it.

thanks

This is my EDC I made; kind of a plain Koa wood with O-1 tool steel. 3 5/8". The first time I held a small sodbuster, I felt like it was the most comfortable pattern ever made!

Samblam, tell us about that little yellow sodbuster with the case emblem all over it. It looks really cool!
