Sodbusters, whos got em'?

This is my EDC I made; kind of a plain Koa wood with O-1 tool steel. 3 5/8". The first time I held a small sodbuster, I felt like it was the most comfortable pattern ever made!

Samblam, tell us about that little yellow sodbuster with the case emblem all over it. It looks really cool!

hey Grant

I like your version, seems very well made, we may talk about something  I think
nice work there!

it's a shepard hills special, it's just a yella handled jr with the case emblem etched all over it, and it has a stainless blade.

that soddie you have made is a very nice piece, how about a picture of it closed up.

thanks

these are my latest 3, a carl schlieper eye brand, a kissing crane brown mule, and a queen country cousin.

i queen is the nicest of the bunch, while the brown mule is my favorite of the three i think, it has a tremendous snap on opening and closing. the eye brand is also finished nicely. does anyone know what kind of wood they used on the mule or the eye brand.

oh and by the way i should have a large boker and a small boker on the way.

thanks
sam

I'm curious about that wood-handled Eye Brand. I have one of the large synthetic-handled Eye soddies, and I like it. Good carbon blade. I've been a little reluctant to purchase the wood version, as I've seen some older wood-handled knives with cracking/splitting issues (at/near the pins, especially). I'm wondering if the wood on these newer knives is sturdier (maybe stabilized?).

Well, I own a Case Soddie CV with yellow synthetic handles. It´s a very good blade and the steel is very good to resharpen.

That´s one of my standart-working-knives

What I wanted to say, in my opinion the sodbuster-style is some kind of the "original-slippie-style" in knives. Spartanian style and a hughe kind of working capacity...

i try to think of a wood scaled knife like a piece of fine old furniture, if you keep it clean and use a little polish with some oil in it or even something like tru-oil for gunstocks, it'll do better and the elements well wear on it less and pro long the life, but who knows if that's the right kind of thinking or not, as i'm only 24 and still have alot to learn. i'm sure if i'm wrong someone will come along with a very welcomed correction because i need all the help i can get.

thanks

I'm generally inclined to agree. I've got a bunch of 'older' knives that I've not abused at all, and they've always been kept clean. Most of the cracks & splits that I've seen on older knives were there when I acquired them. Didn't know if that was due to lack of care, or if it was just typical of the older wood handles.

Think I might just bite the bullet and get one for myself. I'm sure I'll get a feel for it then. :)

Thanks.

what if any thoughts do you guys have about the boker tree brand sodbusters, i've got a large and small version on the way (they should be here friday) but was just curious what others thought of them. i'll let you guys know my thoughts in a week or so.

thanks
sam

i retract my previous post hehe, the search function is a great thing. i have found what i was wondering about, i was just being impatient in my wait until friday for my new knives.

thanks
sam

The bottom three Sodbusters in the picture arrived late yesterday afternoon.

ed, those bulldog brands are really cool, i like that they come in different colors, i'm gonna have to try one of them, i also wish queen hadn't stopped making the red country cousin.
thanks for the pictures, now if it were only friday so my new bokers would get here.

thanks

How would you sodbuster guys rate the Kissing Crane brown mule I seem to recall some negative and postive stuff about it but it looks like a good deal to me anyways.

i have had one for about a week now, and have used it for breakfast and lunch everyday, and i like it a lot, it is roughly finished, and the blade is not centered well on mine, but the wood handle feels awesome in my hand and the blade takes an absolutely razor sharp edge with relative ease, and has no play what so ever. overall as a work knife, or a "beater" knife i love mine and would say if you like the looks get it and use it, if you like sodbusters then you'll understand it and love it. oh yeah it has a ridiculous snap opening and closing.

thanks
sam

I ordered a 4 5/8" Rough rider sodbuster...in Amber bone, its a shame I have to wait till I'm back in the US to use it. :)

they didn't show up friday, i was at the shop when the big brown truck showed, and no knives, they said they would be in monday but i'm out of town til all week, so i guess i have to wait another week, but when i do get them, ill get pictures and let you know what i think.

My K R Johnson sodbuster came in this week. Here it is next to a Queen Country Cousin.

well my boker sodbusters are home safe, and also joined by a small rough rider in amber jigged bone. the large boker is a bit disappointing, the snap is so so (might improve with a good clean and oil job) and has more play in the blade than i like, but it cost me a whopping 15 bucks so i'm gonna throw it in my work stuff and use the fire out of it when i get it good and sharp. the small boker on the other hand is great, a little rough around the edges but tight as it can be with no play, and awesome snap. the rough rider needs a little work, it's super sharp, but i need to peen the pivot pin as it can be worked loose just by opening and closing it, but it was an 8 dollar knife so i'll use it til it falls apart and be happy with it.
