Spyderco is dead in Canada

If I were the big cheese at Spyderco I'd ship my knives to Canada with a nail groove for opening the blade, and a small indented hole on the blade where, if you have access to a standing drill press, you could drill a Spyderhole.

Sounds like someone in authority over pocket knives needs a whack upside the head with a hockey stick, just kidding, just kidding, just kidding.

If the CBSA found a knife like what they are disallowing through shipment being carried by a Canadian citizen's person returning to Canada could they confiscate it if it is not actually against any Canadian law? This is a real pickle! Sorry guys! :(
That is correct. This can also happen if a knife is sent for warrenty work. It basically negates any oem warrenty. I have heard claims like "lockbacks should be ok" or "chris reeve will likely be ok" but if one person decides its a no go there is no meaningful recourse. You are left with your legal property being essentially stolen from you by your own government. I hope we can stop this and send a message that this type of careless policy will not be tolerated.

Any knife that can be opened one handed is potentially subject to seizure. Nail nicks, thumb studs, holes, etc. all included. Even if you can Spydie Drop your Swiss Army knife it can be seized. Buck knives have been seized....

Extreme overreach by the CBSA and the CITT. This will have negative effects on businesses on both sides of the border. Sad state of affairs.

Warriors and Wonders is Canada's largest online knife retailer and undoubtedly the best source of Spyderco in Canada. This was just posted on their website;
'Important notice: Due to a recent CBSA decision, we are no longer able to import Spyderco folding knives. As individual items sell out, they will be removed from our web site.'

Where do you see that posted?
I don't see it posted on their site.

They also just got a bunch of the sprint runs in from Spyderco...I bought the Spyderhawk.

And Sal Glesser said in a PM to me that they have had no problems shipping to Canada.

So...where are you getting this from?

We all know about that idiotic decision.
The Spyderco knives Warriors and Wonders recently got in arrived just last month, well after that.
They had been added to the catalogue in December as a "Preview", then taken down till they were sure they would be able to sell them, as in when they physically arrived.

They physically arrived.
And I bought the Spyderhawk with orange handle.

So, since the knives arrived, and since there is no announcement on the website right now saying they aren't getting more Spyderco knives in, I am still asking where the OP is getting this from.

It was there a couple days ago and seemingly for just a few days. I just checked the site and didn't see the message anymore, only a link to the e-petition for parliament. I was going to screen shot the message, but didn't want to given that they're a non-sponser dealer. I can however, post their email reply to my inquiry about said message if anyone would like?

They did have a notice posted over the weekend but I sent some positive waves and the message is gone and the knives are in stock.

I don't need any thanks. Just want everyone to remember. Positive waves.

From the Spyderco forum, they have a screenshot:

I was going to do the same, but W&W isn’t a supporting dealer, so I didn’t post the screenshot.

On their main page they definately had the note stating that they are no longer allowed to import Spyderco due to recent CBSA decisions and to basically buy them now because once they are gone, they’re gone. Must have taken it down yesterday or today.

Their Spyderco prices are super high now anyways and I buy Spydercos elsewhere, but I would hate for them or any other Canadian dealer to be unable to procure and sell Spydercos. Not a knock against them as I had 2 non-Spyderco knives arrive from them today. :)

Huh, weird.
But the message is gone, so perhaps things are looking up.

Nothing opens by "centrifugal force" since it's an observed force and "centripetal force" would be more accurate. However it is inertia, rather than force which causes the blade to open. Someone should send CA Customs a page from a first year physics book.

Yeh it was only up for a day or two Stabman and then they changed it to a link to the petition. Looks like Sal is on it. In the meantime send the petition to everyone you know. Thanks for all the comments everybody.

My Benchmade 940's omega springs died a couple of weeks back. I contacted Benchmade customer support and they are mailing me a new set of springs. I did not want to take a chance of it getting seized at the border if I mailed it in for repair. Benchmade gave me the option of shipping the knife but said they would tighten the pivot so the knife could not flick open when they return shipped it. I guess they are aware of some of the over zealous efforts to disqualify knives at the border.

That's nice to know. I kind of figured they might rethink their policy for us poor ba$st@rds up here. If I ever have any issues with any of my knives, I'll have to fix them myself, however it would be nice to have the proper parts rather than try and cobble up my own.

A previous post mentioned that WW may be taking CBSA to court over the illegal seizure. If this is actually true, that may be the reason for taking down the announcement. Maybe they don't want it displayed with a court case pending.

Also, a large retailer seeding panic to promote sales? Only a cynic would say that was the case. Its going to be a struggle, but it seems pretty similar to what happened in Australia. Keep pressure on your MPs and ask when CBSA will have to be answerable to the people.

When I returned home from Pennsylvania to Canada last August after a long weekend the CBSA agent asked if I had anything to declare and if so the value? I said I had bought two pocket knives worth approx. $150 CAD. The border guard specifically asked me if either knife could open with one hand or a flick? I explained they were simple traditional knives and he smiled and said have a nice day.

I would not lie to a border agent as they have more power then we can imagine and I don't want my name in some bad book where I face scrutiny at my every entrance and exit of the country. I am also not a fan of latex.:oops::poop:

That said anything beyond a small traditional knife stays home when I travel across any border.
