SPYDERCO SALT THREAD...fishing, ocean, stories, pics and all things "salt"

Nice pic bugs. I actually caught a spotted eagle ray off the kayak a couple of months ago trolling a yozuri crystal minnow. Not a foul hook either...he actually tried to eat it. That was a first. Managed to get my lure back...carefully. Once of those guys would ruin your day if he jumped in the kayak with you.

That Yozuri must have been swimming deep. Many moons ago my wife and I were beach fishing at Boca Grande and fishing deep lures for snook in the pass. She hooked something big that just slowly and steadily swam away until it spooled her. Never could say for certain what it was but I always wondered if it was a big ray. Last time I saw a spotted Eagle Ray was in Palau; beautiful animal. I need to post some dive pics one of these days.

Haven't got anything major lately, only a few rat reds and the ever popular cats. [emoji14]

Regular CM probably running 5 or 6 feet deep in 8-10 feet of water. Right on the beach. We've got tons of those eagle rays here. I see them all the time.

We love to ride the beaches from New Smyrna north to Daytona looking for Manta Rays. The cobia hang out under them and will readily eat a live bait or artificial. They are a blast to catch but wouldn't want to put a big one in a kayak......without a bat or .22 first ;)

BC the way you are cleaning that fish makes it very easy to slice your palm open if the blade of a very sharp knife completely penetrates the fish which is easy to do. It scares me to see you do that. You are better off laying the fish sideways, IMHO. It only has to happen one time to make you a believer.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I will make sure to be careful and try to remember that. The pic may look deceiving as I am only slicing lengthwise down the belly in this photo. The throat has already been cut horizontally with a different (safer) grip. I never really considered the blade making it all the way through the spine of the fish and into my palm, but with enough force I am sure it could happen. Always pays to be safe!

Edit: I originally posted something about someone else not being safe then I remembered this. This was last year. Don't think the Pacific Salt would have helped me much if ole Bessie had gotten irritable.:p

Very cool. They sure are a pretty fish. I remember diving the walls in Palau. Looking down you could see massive schools of eagle rays. An absolutely stunning sight. Some things just get burnt into your brain.

As an aside my wife just informed me that my Pac Salt just went through a load of work clothes in the washing machine. Flushed it out with water and blew out the water with my air compressor. Seems to have smoothed up the action a bit. Hey Sal did say he wanted to see how this knife would hold up under adverse conditions. :D

My $20 antique mall treasure!!! I was like a kid in a candy store. It casts like a dream, the action is great, and the sensitivity is awesome. They don't make em like this anymore. And as this is the unofficial fishing thread, I had to share my joy with some guys that will understand the deal I got!!

Used to use Fin-Nor's "back in the day". Great reels and overbuilt. They hold up well. My only gripe was they are a little heavy and can be tough to get parts for. For 20 bills that is a steal. Out of Fin-Nor's current offerings the Lethal 100 is another well built reel at a steal of a price. The smaller Lethal models are not built to the same standards however.

Summer is ending, last week was the last for summer vacation for us this year. We explored a new area for us, the Conero Regional Park, in Marche Region, with its beautiful seaside, countryside, small towns and fishermen’s villages :). A farewell to the sea, the beaches, the wind, see you next summer! As usual, the Pacific Salt is my trustful beach companion  . Some pics, just to share :)!

My jealously knows no bounds...
;)

Great pics!

Thank-you Armadew! It's a very nice place, really. It took me 5 hours driving from Milano, I'd bet you can make it in 7 from CH. A lot of Swiss families there also! A long week-end can be something not so out of reach. September it's even better, crowd is gone, sea is warm and the weather still very nice :) ! Take care.
