SPYDERCO SALT THREAD...fishing, ocean, stories, pics and all things "salt"

Ok guys,

I got the Salt in and while the overall quality was great I wasn't sure if it were gonna be a keeper. I got it for a vacation/gym knife but I decided to use it all day today. Used it to prep for chili, cut up some cardboard, as well as prepare this fire and make smores.

I think me and the Salt are gonna get along just fine.

Sweet. You should try carrying every day for a few weeks. It will grow on you quickly. I still slightly prefer pe for edc but spyderco's serrations are very capable for most any task.

Nice work on the Assist. I was just curious as to which one you prefer between it and your modified Atlantic?

I'd say I slightly prefer the Assist. I like the longer bit of pe that it has at the tip. Call me a dork but I also dig the whistle. My only issue with the assist is I carry IWB in board shorts and the thicker handle is not as comfortable as the Atlantic.

Anyone have pictures comparing the Pacific and Atlantic. Also the Talsman?

Can't give you a comparison (don't own the atlantic) but I hope some of these below can help you as size comparison...

My parents, ages 70 and 80, very recently became Spydeco fans, so much so that they took their Spydies to the beach with them while on vacation last month and had a little photo shoot. :D

Nice story!
I've shown my Dragonfly 2 to two surfers this past month, now they both want one! They never handled a Spyderco before...

I can feel the H1 bite staring to grow there...

Dude...That. Is. Awesome. Cool to see people of older age get into Spydies....

Favorite fish to eat: Red snapper is probably my favorite. A good tempura coating and deep fry tastes like huge chunks of crab meat to me.

Most underrated fish to eat: Hmm.. mullets. I catch them with a flounder rig and some cubes of pork fat (stays on hook all day). Throw some corn meal clumps (like chum) in the water and you'll catch dozens quick. They're also the easiest fish to clean in my opinion.

Most overrated fish to eat: Hogfish. It's a type of snapper and real ugly too. That being said, I'm more convinced people praise them because they're a lot more uncommon to catch.

Most caught fish: Damn this is tough one. Probably a tie between pink mouth grunts and eels (I fish a lot on the seven mile bridge near Miami). Pinfish too, caught A LOT of those.

Biggest catch: 5 foot black tip shark. Pretty good too, but soaked the meat in milk to take the bite off.

Most used salt water knife: All sorts of cheap knives until the caspian 1 salt. It's been my most used utility knife for fishing. List of things I've found it useful at include: quick bait cutting, line cutting, rope cutting (this happens a lot less than people realize), prying off barnacles, and shucking a lot of oysters. Not so great at: cleaning fish. I can gut them well, but not enough blade area to scale them. And most certainly not good for filleting :p.

Hey, I know this is an older post. I always casually fished here and there before, but recently stepped it up a lot and learning. Mullets are the shad family right or no? Just curious of your input, are Mullets bony when eating them and also any fish you would compare it to in taste? I was looking up some of the shad near me, and people said for the most part not good eats. Pretty curious about Mullet then. Thank you in advance for your time if you happen to see this post.

Thanks for the comments. :)

Mom reports that initially she wondered what on earth she'd do with a little knife like the Dragonfly that's smaller than any of her kitchen paring knives, and she and dad both wondered about the usefulness of a knife with a serrated edge for every day tasks, but they agreed to humor me and give 'em a try. Dad now uses his Salt 1 when puttering around in the garden instead of an old, dull knife that he's kept in the shed for decades, and mom uses the li'l Dragonfly for, well, everything. Trimming herbs, opening annoying plastic clam shell packages, peeling oranges, butterflying chicken breasts (I feel like an infomercial: It slices. It dices... :D). If there's something that needs to be cut, she goes straight for the Spydercos; usually the Dragonfly, but sometimes the Delica. Depends on the cutting task in question. At first, she used them sparingly and was worried about wearing them out. I think I've managed to convince her that's not possible. *g* My parents. I'm so proud. :p

This thread has been dormant for a bit. So i took my Pacific Salt for a walk in the snow. Didn't ask it to do anything other than pose for pics.

I bought this Salt 1 a couple of years back for a beach trip and its gone with me multiple times a year to OBX and FL since. Rides in my pockets in and out of the water (fresh and salt) with nothing more than a rinse in between. Its also been my go to during the snow and past few years of pretty serious flooding here in WV. Put it on an Edge Pro Apex the day I got it and have only ever had to touch it up on fine rods maybe twice and strop it regularly. H1 is some pretty rad stuff haha

I still carry my Salts (Pacific Salt especially) as primary use blades everyday, they've seen much action in the Kitchen and outdoors these past Holiday season and Christmas, H1 is perfect for that.

To the dishwasher they go after some chocolate, syrup, veggies, meat, oil, and other food and stuff! :D

Of course opening gifts and packages was a constant this Christmas

and those plastic wrappings and clamshells fell victim to the Tasman, with the best blade shape for that task it made short work of everything

they were the choices for my lightweight Winter hikes and some small trips

ideal for humid environments (my Multitool rusted after 2 days there!). H1 is a breeze to sharpen, it gave me acouple cuts since I last posted here, but it's my fault no doubt.

And finally, I will say it again: When you need a PE, you have to have a PE. A serrated edge will not substitute a Saw either, not for wood at least. But i you got those two covered, then a Spyderedged Hawkbill can't be beat for cutting power!
