Stormy Weather

Stormy Weather's handle has been oiled, the next and I believe the last step for the handle is for it to be waxed and buffed. Magnus didn't sound convinced that he was entirely happy with the way the patina turned out but I like it fine. It's up to him to change it if he wants, but it's his call.

Not long now!

In the bottom two pictures the handle is actually still slightly wet from the oil, just prior to wiping it off.
The top one is with oxidized copper and waxed handle.

We'll see about the patina, it looks good but it will change slightly with time, so I can decide when the sheath is done.

Thanks again for all kind words!

Regards
/Magnus

The way he finished that handle REALLY made the colour and grain POP!

This is turning out to be absolutely stellar! Thanks for the pictures, I'm having a blast with this thread.

These are all the pictures I have til this point.
I expect that there will be more soon, and I will post them as Magnus sends them to me.

Hope you're enjoying the thread!

Magnus sent me the following photo to get my opinion on what the stitching should look like. I agreed with him that brown is the way to go, I don't really want this sheath to be too black, and besides the brown stitching will go well with the copper bits and the browns in the wood.

Wow! Very cool. There is so much architecture in the leather work. I can't believe that you would actually go chop something with this. I know it's a knife but man this is art.

amazing, isn't it?
Everything is so precise. Magnus is a knife maker who relies on precision and it shows. It's rare to find that intertwined so cohesively with such a creative mind.
Relax, I won't chop cinderblocks. But I do intend to use it.

That would be a tough decision....on one hand, it was designed to be used, and looks like it would cut great, but on the other hand, it is so nicely finished, it would be hard to mess that up!

That quandary belongs to Lorien:D

We all derive our enjoyment from knives in our own ways. Lorien likes chopping/clearing trails. So, what the heck, get at it.

I'm SURE Lorien will report back to us after he puts it to use.
I'm interested in how it's going to perform and hold up.

And on the third hand, Lorien is not lacking for big hard-working choppers in his rotation that have already been put to use. No question it's up to him - his knife, his dollars, his call. But if I were in his shoes, I'd keep this one pristine and add some more battle scars to the ones already scratched up.

That would be my choice as well, but that is coming from someone that uses a lightweight folding saw to clear obstructions from my mountain bike trails.;)

A far more efficient tool to trim branches than any knife. It's simply a better tool for the job.

You are going to 'use' this knife? Chopping? Of course it's built for this. It's going to be inefficient at the task in comparison.

Understand that admiring this knife, in pristine condition, for many ages, should far outweigh the impulse to hack anything for the sake of showing us you are a 'user'.

Magnus is an artist of the highest order. That he makes a tool as his medium does not require it's implementation.

I know you disagree. That's OK. :D

That is so beautiful you couldn't pay me enough to go chopping with it! I just wouldn't have it in me...That being said, different strokes for different folks and all, toys are WAY more fun when you get to play with them:) Go with your heart Lorien! I can just imagine all the little trees trembling with fear...

well now, this is turning into an interesting discussion. So long as the condescension is kept in check, there could be a very good exchange of ideas brought about.

Is it really so simple- that if one uses his knives, he is 'classified' as a 'user' and one who does not use his knives is 'classified' as a 'collector'? Can one not use the knives he collects, and yet collect knives at the same time?

To me, the only difference between a knife which is collected, and one which is used is that the collected one remains 'mint', while the used one shows signs of wear. In either event, rust never sleeps, but a well made knife will always outlast a human life provided it is properly maintained.

Now with this knife, it was designed for a specific purpose. It was built using highly resistant materials, which were chosen based on that specific purpose. That purpose is not to chop logs, but rather to clear corridors through understory in a temperate rainforest environment. These plants are extremely tenacious and tough, and a lightweight folding saw is useless. I could go into great lengths to try and describe the difference between building a trail from scratch, as opposed to clearing obstructions from an existing trail, but really experience is the only way to know.

If Magnus truly is an Artist of the highest order, (and I feel that he is, but history will be the judge of that) I'm already ahead of the game, used or not. But the long term value of this knife is not important to me, or should I say the value of the knife is not nearly as important to me as the knife itself.

I certainly wouldn't use it, however from reading Lorien's posts over the years I can't imagine him not. I also can't imagine him ever selling it, so what's a few marks and scuffs. I'm sure there's some knife owners who consider their battle scars enhancements.
Back in the football days us defensive guys were very proud of the battle scars on our helmets. Paint them every few games? :thumbdn: Are you kidding me, we worked to hard for those marks. ;)

Whatever Lorien decides to do will be good for him.
