Think I'll just wait for results from the Scout/Sniper check. I think with a potential resolution at hand, the thread is just gonna get wonky(er) since everyone else hasn't got much of anything concrete left to say on the subject (or never did to begin with)

Up until this thread started on 12/15, there was never any doubt to most people out there about Duane’s background. Sorry but I was not a Marine or a Sniper so nothing that I had ever seen jumped out as being off. Then out of the blue this thread with a title that said it all. So far the main proof being records on a Poland, that doesn’t come up under quick searches. So no nothing in this thread has changed my opinion. As I don’t consider Lance neutral or just seeking the truth I am sure a lot don’t view me as unbiased either. So now there is a third party and we’ll see.

You have set the record straight on that situation concerning you and SOCNET and cleared up any misunderstandings.



I deal in research, not personalities, my research took me to SOCNET and linked you with Lakis and Strider, Your words have been used in the past to give credibility to people who are not credible and you were never on the record as correcting that, now you are and that is done. This was never about you are myself, only a journey to get to the facts, to what the true story is, toes got stepped on, people got their feelings hurt, thats because certain people were/are liars who have committed military fraud, smoking them out is not pretty to look at for anyone and I find no pleasure in any of this.

Duane Dwyer called me back, today. I had left a message for him a few days ago, simply giving my name and phone number, and asking him to call me.

He was friendly and polite, and didn't seem to have any issue with me for asking about these matters. Unfortunately, he called me at a time when I really couldn't talk, while I was watching over my dear friend's sick 1 year old and 4 year old, and both were demanding immediate attention.

I will relate the brief call below, as best I remember. Please forgive me for any errors. I may be prone to errors, due to the fact that I have never been in the military (couldn't have, even if I'd wanted to), and have little familiarity with military matters. I'm just a nature photographer. And the call was very short, while I was distracted. I wasn't able to take very careful note.

Me: "Hello."

Duane: "Hi; may I speak to Mike?"

Me: "Who's calling, please?"

Duane: "This is Duane Dwyer, from Strider Knives, returning Mike's call."

Me: "Oh, Hi, Duane. Thank you for returning my call. Unfortunately, you caught me at a bad time. May I call you back?"

Duane: "Yeah. I'll be available for the next hour and a half."

Me: "There's no way I'll be able to return your call in the next hour and a half. When's the next good time to call you back?"

Duane: "You can try, tomorrow. I'm pretty busy getting ready for SHOT show. If I'm in the shop, grinding, with the respirator on, I don't take calls. Otherwise, I'll be in and out."

Me: "OK, I'll call you back, as soon as I have an opportunity. I'm sure we'll get in touch, sometime over the next few days."

Duane: [Muffled... I couldn't hear over yelling kids]

Me: "Excuse me?"

Duane: "What is this regarding?"

Me: "Well... It's probably a lot to get into right now, when I need to get off the phone. I've read all kinds of things about you on internet forums, over the last few days, and I was hoping I could get your take, ask you a few questions, and get some answers."

Duane: "Sure. Those accusations are false. It's a personal attack by people with long time vendettas against me. I'm litigating. Litigation is underway. The Scout Sniper Association will be releasing a statement, soon. This will all be out in the open, soon. It will be taken care of. If you still want to know more, feel welcome to call me back, and I'll tell you the details of the story."

Me: "Thanks, Duane. I will. Talk to you, soon. Bye."

Duane: "Bye."

So, there you have it. I'll try to call him back, Friday, to get the rest of the story, and to ask pertinent questions. In the mean time, at least we do finally have some direct comments from him, and I hope they help resolve this.

"Gunnery Sergeant" Gary Lakis Incident!

Vice President Joe Tablada reported that he had received reports from other SpecOp contacts that the person who attended last year's 2001 Reunion in Louisville had never served in a Force Recon unit and was thus an impostor (or "wannabe").

For those in attendance at Louisville, Gary Lakas purporting to be a "Gunnery Sergeant" was wearing 3 silver stars, 2 bronze
stars and 3 purple hearts. He had the audacity to have his picture with all of his ribbons and decorations taken with our Commandant, General Jim Jones. When this fraud and illegal impersonation was discovered, Lakas flew to Hawaii and confessed personally to Vice President Tablada. The Executive Committee determined that he had either failed to or presented forged documentation (DD214?) to the prior Executive Director Gary Marte. In that he had never qualified for membership, he was not considered a member. His name has been expunged from FRA records. Investigation is continuing for possible criminal charges. Allegedly, based upon his "membership" in FRA he was able to get a contract training SEALS and other SpecOp personnel.

It would appear that if the other allegations against Lakas are substantiated, that any training contracts obtained would be under false premises and could be revoked. President Sasser warned that it appears that there are a lot of "Wannabes" out there. Persons who claim various special types of duty and appropriate decorations. The Board of Directors urge that complete documentation be required for all future members and that the application contain names of FRA members who were supposed to have served with such person in a Force Recon billet. Further that these sponsors be vetted to ensure that the prospective member is truly eligible.

Remember Members: "If everyone could get into Force Recon, It would not be "Force Recon"!

President Sasser emphasized that with the new Executive Director Dr. Wayne Lingenfelter, that all 107 new members have been properly vetted and that the FRA is retaining copies of all DD-214s and other verifying documents. Unfortunately, following the turn-over from the prior Executive Director, there were virtually no membership records indicative of the right to membership. This has now been rectified and, from now on, all persons seeking membership in FRA will provide appropriate documentation (such as copies of DD-214s, orders etc). Efforts will be made to verify qualification for membership of new applicants from present members who may have served with the new applicants.

What matters to me, in this case anyway... what is the truth ?

As far as I am concerned..... I will take DD at his word...... PERIOD.

SO for me.... unless it is proven in black and white.... simple and to the point..... no BS and smoke and mirrows that Evolute or DD lied and this is not what really was said.....

Although I am a newbie on this particular forum, let me give you all some sage advice that has been hard learned by years of dealing with similar issues on SOCNET as an administrator.

Evolute, I know you meant well. No question about that. But you all, every one of you, need to remember that you are dealing with not only a mans livelihood here, but his honor and his reputation. This is real life. Not a game. As my old CSM used to say, good initiative, bad judgement.

You, by your own admission know zero about the issue at hand, Scout/Snipers. You are a nature photographer.

On the other hand, we have four former or current Senior Marine NCO's, all former or current Scout/Snipers, who have volunteered to delve into this and settle it beyond doubt and they have no interest in the outcome either way.

Let the guys who know how to handle it, handle it. When you insert people who have no background into the equation doing these little side investigations it can only cloud the issue and make things that much harder to resolve. It would also make Mr. Dwyer that much more reluctant to provide any info if every tom Dick and Harry from the net is calling him at work and questioning him down about things they know nothing about. If I were him I probably would have just hung up on you. Apparently he is a patient man.


In short, stay out of it. Stay in your lane and let the pro's work. I was a Sniper in the Army. I was a Sniper instructor for six years. I am still not nearly as qualified to check into this as the guys who have volunteered to do so. So, I'm gonna let them work on it and see what they come up with. I suggest you all do the same. This is a unique opportunity to put the issue to rest once and for all. Dont screw it up. If this happens again, I will pick up the phone and ask those Marines to cease and desist on trying to help resolve this, and I assure you they will stop helping as several are personal friends of mine.

Well, that is surprising. I'm not sure I understand what I'm reading. It sure sounds like you're asking everyone to see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, and let you get on with a cover-up.

You want everyone who's left a message on Duane's answering machine to refuse all calls from him now that you've started a ... what have you started? An investigation? A cover-up? That's a very confusing post.

You threaten that if anyone answers a phone call from Duane you'll pick up a phone and call off the ... um, investigation, is it? It's funny, I've never heard a threat like that from the police. I've never heard a threat like that from anyone doing an investigation before.

Yeah its a little late to wind the clock backwards to stop what already started. I think Sharky knows that.

Hopefully they'll resolve the birthdate issues and records for a second MOS and anything else that still had red flags for me that was never found.

Records are what I hope to see not some letter from the sniper school saying what a great guy he is and how well Strider knives have supported the Marine Snipers with free knives for umpteen years. That proves nothing. We need to see something substantial to shut this down so everyone can either apologize to the man and his company for their mistake in reading what was out there as factual or get to the bottom of the claims and see that they are in fact not holding water

Personally I'm cool with letting the pros handle it at this point so long as its not just another cover up to protect their brother kind of investigation. We are not getting anywhere by our further speculation so the only way to resolve it is for Duane to pony up some documents to be verified. Whats out is out and although it leans toward false claims I think many still want to know the rest without that shadow of doubt that remains for several areas.

I see your point, but even if Evolute's statement is 100% accurate how much weight can it really carry? It's only a brief conversation with someone who's accused of lying.

It does seem that Sharky's group would be more able to verify Dwayne's claims but it's going to take some proof if they do verify he's legit. A simple, "Yes, he's legit, take our word for it." won't be enough.

Emotions or ulterior motives do seem to be at play here from both sides so that must also be taken into consideration. Only time will tell, it's probably best that we wait to see what Sharky can come up with and if it's enough to cause a change to the POWNET site.

I do feel I owe Michelle an apology for her outting of Lance. He may be right or wrong but there does seem to be a personal stake or grudge in his postings. She was right to point that out. What came to mind was when one of the vocal opponents in Mick's thread had his picture and info posted as retaliation to his views. This does not appear to be the same scenario. Sorry, Michelle.

The only thing that is going to put this to rest is proof that shows that Duane is what the claims say he is. That proof will have to be presented for all to see. Where it comes from doesn't matter, but it can't be just some people saying they looked into it and have verified that Duane was a Marine sniper. That would prove nothing.

Only if you're thinking in terms of taking somebody's word that Duane is a dog. If you're looking at evidence it doesn't matter what anyone says he thinks about the evidence or what his emotions or motives might be; you can just ignore him and look at the evidence.

I think what he is saying is the professionals, snipers from the Military, are on the case so others shouldn't interfere.

For example, if Homicide is investigating a murder case does it make sense for a person that has only watched CSI a few times to be calling witnesses and asking questions in the off chance he'll solve the case? No it doesn't. The CSI wannabe wouldn't even know the first question to ask.

Some on the net have asked the questions...the snipers have said they'll get to the bottom of it so, IMO, they should be given room to do so. I'm sure they'll explain exactly how they reached their conclusion.
