Strider Opinions

He is notorious for stealing knife designs. Not a hanging offense but not very ethical either. I'm not here to measure anyone's crimes or shortcomings, and I simply offered up Cold Steel as an example of a knife brand that gets a lot of criticism. Close whatever knife maker or brand that makes you happy. All I'm saying is that for those who chose a knife for its makers ethics or morality, there should be some discretion. If we knew the background of every makers life we might be surprised at what we find. Like I said earlier, I don't get too wrapped up in knife community politics, I just want a good knife at is functional, comfortable to handle, sharp, and well made.

Let me guess. It's the GI Tanto you're referring to, right? A sharpened prybar at 1/10th the price? With references to unnamed stolen valor/thief makers? Shame on him for stealing from a thief! Still, though, small potatoes by comparison.

LT's hunting line looks awfully similar to Fallkniven. I'm sure Fallkniven "inspired" some designs. Small potatoes that add up to big $$ over the long haul.

To the OP, I let the knives speak to me. If it's a good knife then it'll tell you that it's a good knife. Forget about the politics. It's a hobby and enjoy it.

When I first started out this hobby I got caught up in the knife politics and listened to reviews and what not, and when I did that I ended up missing out on some good knives just because they're from a certain manufacturer or brand. Microtech has a bad rep for this and that, but they make fantastic knives. One of my favorite knife of all times, the Socom Elite, is made by them, but I ignored the company for the longest time because of their said history or company policy. When I decided to get pass the politics, I seem to enjoy this hobby even more. I just buy whatever knife I want, and if it's up to my standards then I'll keep it. If not, then it's off to a new owner.

I initially avoided Striders because of his "past", but when I got my first SnG it slowly grew on me. I like the aesthetics of the knife, but I didn't like the ergo. The ergos eventually worked it self out as I use it. Is it worth the $400? that's for you to decide when or if you acquire one. Like I said, let the knife do the talking. The SnG so far is doing everything it's suppose to do.

For me personally, I would never own another Chris Reeve knife that's made with S35VN with the RC of 58-59. I followed all the rave and hype of the perfection of CRKs, but the performance of them are so lackluster that I sold all of them except for my Umnumnzaan in S30V. I owned a Small Insingo, Large 21, and the 25. None of them could out perform my Microtech or any of my BMs, ZTs and Spydercos. Sure CRK has great warranty and service, but if the knife itself is the most important part. If it's a well built knife, I shouldn't really have to use the warranty.

Who copied who? Cold Steel has been around since 1980. Fallkniven started up in 1984 with a knife very similar to an early Cold Steel model. Both companies copied much older American knife companies if you want to look into it.

Politics? Nothing political about not wanting to put my money into unclean hands. Lying, stealing and cheating don't necessarily mean politics is involved.

Wonders never cease...Cold Steel support in a Strider thread! :D

That's exactly why I don't support Strider. I already have every knife I could ever possibly need. At this point I am buying knives for the fun of trying out different designs/steels.

There are a lot of things that I need in life that I have little choice in who I buy from but thankfully knives aren't one of those. If I want to spend $400 on a knife there are plenty of amazing knives to choose from on the exchange made from great guys that support this forum.

For their price point, there are many others out there that I would rather own. I am not a fan of the knife length to cutting edge ratio in the SMF, SnG, and PT. I am also not a fan of the fat ended handle or the way the way the lockbar cutout hangs up on the pocket's edge due to the pocket clip placement on those same three models. These issues make it a pain to get your hand in and out of your pocket, causes the knife to hang up in your pocket sometimes when you are trying to pull it out, and really frays the hell out of your pocket after a bit of time.

Ditto. If the cutting edge on the smf was 3.5" I'd be all over it. I just don't understand why the cutting edge only grows 1/8" from the sng to smf. To me that doesn't even warrant making a larger model.

Opinions on Strider change drastically from forum to forum. The "stolen valor" thing is still just alleged, in my estimation. Mick still attends and is welcome at Ranger gatherings. The knives are bomb-proof. I have three with the new lock up and none of them have lock up problems. There are many who estimate Strider has perfected the frame lock. Buy the knife and make your own judgements. If you don't like it, sell it and recoup most, if not all, of your money.

Actually supporting a point but feel free to spin it as serves your purposes.

Heh, my purpose is having a tad of enjoyment during the day.
Life ain't as serious as some of you folks like to think it is, for some odd reason.

Still alive? Check.
Still got lots of knives? Check.
Still less grumpy than plenty of other people? Check. :D

As president and chief correspondent for "Grumpy Old Men Inc." I must inform you that we have taken a vote and have decided your post is not worthy of comment so we will not respond. . . . . . . . . . . . .D'oh!

Strider perfected the frame-lock???!!! You must be kidding.

He perfected it but he's paranoid. If he actually uses it on a knife available to the public some old meany like Chris Reeve or Sal Glesser will reverse engineer and steal it.

Haha I missed some of those. He's clearly a real class act, I should reconsider supporting such a stand up guy
