Super polished edges

Beautiful work. What stone progression did you use? How are you liking the Hap40? Any other steel you'd say it's similar to?

Thank you, I gave my early impressions of HAP40 and the stone progression I used in a previous post:

It is still very early with the HAP 40, but I really like it so far. It appears to have good high-sharpness edge
retention with a highly polished apex, and has no trouble taking a very high level of push cutting sharpness. As far as my very limited understanding of metallurgy goes, both are expected side effects of the high apex stability of HAP40/M4.

The stone progression on the ~8 dps edge bevel was Sigma Power Select II 1,000 -> 6,000 -> 10,000 -> 13,000 and then the apex was set using a micro bevel created with Spyderco Sharpmaker fine rods (which behave much more fine that their grit rating when used with grams of force and mineral oil). The resulting level of push cutting sharpness is well into absurd territory: Push cutting through a whole sheet of phone book paper at 90 degrees across the grain, passing HHT 3-4 on my extremely fine head hair, push cutting a tomato down to the cutting board, etc.

To that I would add that, from my very limited understanding of metallurgy, HAP 40 is apparently fairly similar to M4.

Keep in mind; a knife edge can be @ a high degree of polish and still not be sharp. The apex does not reflect an image and in the end, its the condition of the apex that matters.

Fred

I learned that lesson early on with my first few attempts at polishing. I ended up with a very pretty but worthless piece of metal. I had the false impression that the finer I went in grit, the sharper it would be. I now know that any edge will never be sharper than can be achieved at very coarse grits. Finer grits simply give a more refined bevel.

Thanks, Josh. -- Love it! Did my 0566 (Elmax) and it turned out great and super sharp as well. I generally don't use my knives extremely hard so I haven't hard-tested edge retention. But for my hobbyist uses, so far...couldn't be happier.

Awesome edge man! Which kizer is that? I like it!

Thx again, Josh. And again your work is beautiful. It's a Kizer 405. And just fyi...the blade isn't black, it's just the angle and the lighting. It's a really solid knife, a frequent heavier user of mine...."abuse-able". Very smooth flipper on washers. I decided it would look (and perform) a lot better with a mirror polished, super sharp edge. What knife doesn't?! :)

If you think it does good with a 20/25 dps edge, you should try a straight 15 😉 definitely gonna have to check into that kizer, love the blade shape.

Thanks, Steel_Drake, for the kind words. I'm relatively new to sharpening but find it very ZEN and relaxing. So I'm still in the honeymoon phase of enjoying it and doing it probably too often for my own good. I find myself looking for knives in my collection to experiment on and add that mirror polished edge to, to hone my skills and add that killer edge we all seem to like...along with our micro-fiber cloths! The second greatest invention after the angle controlled sharpening system, IMHO.
Nice work on the bunch you've posted lately, also nice green micro-fiber cloth that we apparently all have in various colours! :D

Excellent work as usual, I'm pretty surprised at how wide those bevels are for 15 dps!

Thanks man. Ideally the mirror edge would be a hairline wide when looking at it from the side. Say maybe .010" thick at 15 dps. This would really help with what this kind of edge is designed for - push cutting. Not only that, but mirroring and edge lol that only takes about 25 min vs 1.5hrs 😊

Yeah, getting knives down to ~0.010" behind the edge really pays a big dividend in push cutting ability. My edge bevels are still fairly wide out of personal preference, as I find I get the bevels flatter when they are a bit wider, but really it is the thickness behind the edge rather than the angle or width of the edge-bevel that matters.

I totally hear you on the time though, in your shoes I would probably do regrinds on all my knives to make it faster to polish them on a guided rod system.

Here's a couple of new pics from me, one of my HAP 40 Endura and one of my ZDP-189 Caly 3.5:

Josh, tried your tip. Hairline micro. You're right... Thx.

high contrast at just the right angle - to highlight the micro...(pixels do funny things when pushed)

^ Very nice dude! I like doing a micro because that way you are guaranteed to hit the apex w/ the finest grit!

Just finished this up at 15 dps

Just did this on an edge pro clone with edge pro stones. No worries, just ordered a real edge pro, the clone's wiggle and cracking parts were pissing me off [emoji12]
