Tactical Hawk Comparison Old vs New

I like it.
Thanks. For the purposes of feedback is there anything in particular that you like about it.

That’s a great designee. Is that hole on the end of the handle a lanyard hole?
That is one of the intended purposes, yes. It can also be used as a wire breaker or nail puller.
Is a there a reason for the gap in the middle of the handle?
It just gives some separation between the two main grip areas, and indicates where the ideal hand hold areas would be. And less importantly for some visual aesthetic.
Love the designee on that thing, especially the pyramids on the hammer.
Do you like how it looks or the concept behind them as force multipliers?

The fact that it’s a hammer has a lot of usefulness when it comes to breeching tasks; the spike is a good complement to it and could be considered the weapon side of the tool. Is there going to be an edge on the bottom part of the spike ? Or can it be used as a handle when using the pray bar ?

That it does, but never underestimate the brutal effectiveness of the hammer side as a primary weapon.

-The back spike is sharped on the underside. The curve will help in cutting cord, rope, and webbing, & for pull cuts (pierce wall and tilt handle up and pull.)
With the top grip area on the handle near the head and the rest of the head I don't see a need to be able to have the spike as a viable handle area. I think it can be better utilized sharpened.

Like a can opener. If that is the case I would think that a bit more pronounced curved on the spike will help whit cutting into sheet metal and the like.

I do realize that the hammer can be a good weapon, but as far as stopping power, that hammer limits your target area to the head region. A body shot whit the hammer is not as effective as a spike going through the ribcage.

That is a true statement.

That being said, you have the two essentials on your tool a hammer and a spike, a fast turn of the head and it becomes a deadly spike, another spin and you have a wrecking crew whit you. I'd say go for it, Ii would love to see that thing come to life.

I can field test that monster. ;)

If I can get it into production you got a deal hermano.

It just seems pretty well thought out but is there a particular reason to it having the four pyramids on the hammer face versus just one big pyramid? Or would one big pyramid be too pointy?I'm saying one big one for the whole face but not very pointed or extended out. One big pyramid would certainly focus more force on the point and considering it is a tactical hammer that would be a good thing. It would certainly cause way more damage even with a bodyshot.

This is the only tactical hammer I have seen; it’s by American Kami, the guy i badmouthed a few post back, sorry again for that DJ.
It looks like the same concept. The spike is very well done.

And the finish on it is much more subdued, no if I could only get my hands on one to destroy a few Narco heads. ;)

Here are a few other pictures of breeching hammers from the Blackhawk line. They give you an idea of what is the need is in a breeching tool.

Here are a few more from Viking Tactics.

Yes, I see one pyramid while having a greater force multiplier having some downfalls.
1st and foremost there is a greater chance of a blow glancing off if you do not hit right ie. staight on. The multiple pyramids aid in gripping into a target. Think of a framing hammer that is why they put those mini pyramids all over the face of the hammer.
2nd it focuses the energy to multiple points say the lower ones go under a rib the upper ones will still hit and shatter the rib.

Bare Rib,

Interesting design!

Just wonder what metal would you be using?

For hard use metal I have always been a fan of 1095 Carbon. I don't know enough about tool steels to think of any options in that realm.

I have looked at many of the breeching hammers and thunder mauls out there but to me it seems like they only have one purpose breeching. They look to heavy and slow to be an effective fighting weapon. My goal with my hammer design was to make a multi purpose "tool." A weapon first but has breeching capabilities.

The one by American kami looks cool but I see some downfalls/drawbacks to it. I will post those up here soon but have to get going right now.

Ok I'm back. The things I don't like by looking (I HAVE NEVER HELD ONE OF HIS HAMMERS) at them is
1. Too many moving parts/bolts to it. The head looks to be separate from the rest of the shaft and the hammer face seems to be made of three pieces attached to each other.
2. The handle looks cool but it has too many angles and contours to it, which decreases the ease at which you can flip it around to utilize the other side of the head.

Interesting you guys went this way with this. I've been drawing up designs of a fighting hammer to compliment my kukri. I'm going to see if any of our custom makers here can/will make it.

That's exactly what I have found to be the case whit similar handel designs, that is what I really love about the Winkler combat axe, a fast turn of the handel and you change from blade to spike.

That could be a split second decision when placed in a combat situation. You might realize that your target has some sort of body armor or helmet, in this case a spike will be more effective at making a deep penetrating strike that the blade head would not.

I wonder what stopping affect a hammer strike to the center body mas area can have?

What I would look for in a strike in this situation, would be to stop an enemy combatant fast, that means targeting the head and neck area and possibly the exposed sides of the body. The legs are also a good target of opportunity if you have sufficient space. I know a hammer would be ideal for a knee strike.

I'm ranting. Sorry.

Probably not much unless it's a sledgehammer. The ribcage is very flexible and can absorb quite a bit of blunt force.

The hammer is good on any "hard" target, i.e. bone -- head, shoulder, elbow, point of pelvis, knees, etc. If the other guy has a knife or something you could hook with the spike end or bash with the hammer end.

A little off topic ( and a little gimicky) but it would be cool if under the head of DJ's hammer there was an axe blade...have the hammer face fit around the axe blade and you could remove it. Yeah I know it would weaken it and make it kinda funky but boy it would be cool for a mall ninja like me :).

I have seen a few SF guys in Iraq carrying what appeared to be ice axes. Wished I knew more about it. Other than that I had a CO that carried a small hatchet on his LBV (the kind sold in the PX, nothing fancy). Luckily I have never had to fight with an edged weapon, if I had to though one of those Wrinkler hawks would be my first choice.

i carried a Vietnam hawk in Iraq it was light and i could punch out a window or a make quick work on a cabinet. For breaching we used explosives or a foot never found a door i could not kick open of course im 6'4 power lifter and weigh 260. or we would bring up the shotgun, i was the breaching tool.
