Teaser for the Hammer Men

Well thought out...and well struck! I need to log a few more forge hours to develop more proficiency. Someday....

It's ironic because most of the things I once thought were bad,... can actually be very good... just depending on which angle you're looking at it from.

Philosophers welcome! :)

"I want you to go in that bag and find my hammer"

"which one is it?"

"It's the one that says "Bad Mother....r"

(Quentin Tarantino reference)

What the Heck ??

You think if you stay real still for a few days we'll forget about 'em ;)

Not a chance !! :D

Lets gets these "Bad-Mo-Fo's" into production ................

Hey Dave,

That hammer will get turned in one set up, turned again in another set up, milled from one side, turned 180 deg and milled again, then turned 90 deg and milled again then HT. Once Tai has evaluated the prototype and made any changes I'll setup for production. But you can imagine the programming, fixtures and setup for the first run will be considerable. Add to that the number of jobs I'm already running and I think you'll see that it is probably going to take us a while. I figure 8-12 weeks to actually get these out there. Hey, if it were easy, a bunch of girls would be doing it... :D

Here’s a shot of the “B.A.D.A.S.S Mofo” prototype. The texturing from the milling and machining will be a little different on the actual production runs.

I’ve tested The heat treating “real hard” and it does a great job of supporting the geometry.

This puppy might just make power hammers obsolete!

Here’s what Nathan said about the heat treating:

“The hammer prototype was made of precision ground annealed and normalized 4150. It was pretty spendy, though the heat treat was simple. Heat to 1200 and equalize (30 min), then austenitize at 1525, also 30 min due to the thick cross section. Quench in room temperature high speed quench oil (with agitation), remove after about 30 seconds and finish in still air (this is like pulling a blade after 8 seconds, still hot). Tempered twice at 400. Estimated hardness HRC 53. I don't own a hardness tester, but it skated a file (under the decarb) before temper. The decarb is probably about .010".

I won't be using that particular steel for production because the raw material cost was $43! Instead I'll be using 4150 directly from the mill. Is it hot rolled, with enormous grain. It will be abrasive sawed into blanks (because it would eat up bandsaw blades to saw cut). It gets annealed at 1650 and air cooled to form fine pearlite, then normalized at something like 1550, then again at 1450 for grain refinement, then a long sphearoidize soak at 1300 to make it more machinable.“ Nathan The Machinist

This thing is SICK, any shots on how it works?? I attempted a hammer a Mexican Planisher but it was just too lite. This one will really move some steel. Can't wait to swing one. Heck you just might have em ready for your hammerfest in Feb.. If we buy a hammer can we come for Free??

I tell you what,... if you come to the hammerjamin and buy a hammer, I'll throw in a free DVD, (and free seconds at lunch). LOL :)

You got a DEAL. Just have to clear it with the boss. Probably my Bday present. Been wanting to come down for years now.

Hey Tai,

Ok guys, guess what? I actually have a week off, sort of, in February. I say sort of, because school's out for a week, but we have our inter-island teachers' conference then. It is considered professional development (PD) week. I could actually bow out of the teachers' conference if I am pursuing alternative PD. Attending a seminar with world renown forging masters, Tai Goo and Raymond Richard would be IDEAL! Hanging with the woodchuck would be a bonus!

Sooooo....have you guys set a date yet? If it happens to be sometime within the date range of February 12-21 that would be way cool (pretty please :o). Of course if it did, I'd still have to come up the airfare, ground transport and accommodations costs.

All the best, Phil

Phil,

It's the 27th, last Saturday in February.

There are some very reasonable quality hotel accommodations near by.

Hope you can make it.

Here's the first finished mill job from the first run. Of course, they will look a little different after HT and tumbling.

Pics from Nathan the Machinist.

Don, I should have some for sale at the Hammerjamin (last Saturday of this month). I'm getting 1 dozen before the Hammerjamin and another dozen ASAP. I doubt I'll sell the whole dozen at the Hammerjamin, and should have some left over.

I'll put you on the list and contact you as soon as I one for you.

Don't worry, I'm sure you can afford it. :)
