The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Except for thanking our friend @CPP for thinking of me, I'll just let the pictures tell the story tonight.

I've been trying to find a little time to crack open the RDD and finally got to it this morning. @CPP had warned me to be careful with the roller bearings as they're tinier than one might think and have a tendency to drop into their berths vertically when replacing. I'd wanted a look inside to check them out along with adding a little light lube, a taste of grease to the detent ball, and to check out the clip attachment.

I got the knife opened up while leaving the two bearing races largely intact with the female pivot and blade still in place, though a few rollers in the presentation side cage came away with the underlay washer. I found out exactly how difficult it was to get the bearings back in, a process complicated by the fact that they were magnetized, wanting both to not come off the tweezer and to be attracted to the pivot barrel while the tweezer would attract an adjacent roller. I got them back in with the help of a wooden swab shaft with the blade in place but found one roller in the lower race had gone vertical and had to lift the blade off. I wanted to snap a few pics while open, but by the time I got it all ready to reassemble I'd had enough and just kept at it to get the job done.

Not that it was lacking before, but I've got the action feeling a little more hydraulic and, for some reason, the lock releases much more easily now. Some of that may be due to my arthritic fingers getting used to it as well as the fact that this drawer queen still needed breaking in. This one is too nice not to carry and use.

No fresh pics today, but here's one from last week.

You know that without pics that didn't happen Chazzy. Sorry :p
You're right, of course, J. We must therefore assume that I was able to see inside the RDD with my x-ray vision and that the action of the knife improved not by interior lubrication but as a result of being bathed by the radiation emanating from my eyes.

You guys have some exceptional custom shop shiros. I have too many hobbies so the big dollars for custom knives for me goes to traditionals (after what’s left over from the hot rod budget), so I’ll just show my newest production shiro. A 111, cf, m390, mrbs but with no fuller. Took me a bit to track one down for decent price. It’s a Russian market one but no paper or cloth (if anyone knows where I might find those to replace, I’d appreciate it). I have the box. I intend to use this big boy (like all my other knives). My zero has made it through customs and should be in the last legs to me from ~24 hours the other side of Moscow lol. I have to admit, I like the latest 111’s that R1 is lottoing right now.

SVTFreak SVTFreak , nice new NeOn and sweet 111 too! I really wanted a 111 with the fuller and am very pleased with mine, but I like the looks of those without as well. After all, they're Shiros, so what's not to like?

@Vladimir_K is a super resource for Shiros and a great guy to deal with. I originally wrote him looking for an F95T, we had a bit of back and forth, and eventually he found and provided my SRBS, M390 Turtle which was state-of-the-art at the time. It's still a great knife and a frequent user. We also corresponded when I was looking for a NeOn UL, he got me my hedgehog tool, and my F95R was sourced from Russia through him by another BF member.

I had earlier procured my 111 new from Russia from another re-seller who often lists here, though he's not registered, and at other forums. He was excellent and helped me overcome my nervousness at buying from the Motherland. I've also dealt directly with Alexandr Cheburkov and find purchasing from Russia to be a smooth and economical process. One can get a much better price and EMS shipping seems safe and relatively quick, considering that knives must travel halfway around the globe. My shipments have usually hit a bit of a tracking black hole near the Moscow airport and another arriving at US Customs clearing on LI, but then seem to magically appear at my PO without any further notice. 10 days has been just about average for those deliveries, the range being one to two weeks. I've become quite comfortable with buying from Russian individuals as well as from Alex. I've not used any of the largely over-priced Russian dealers, though their track records do seem solid.

Obligatory Shiro pic....

quite an interesting design. I understand why they went with the 110 as it shows the biggest leap forward in design from an axis lock with composite scales to a titanium framelock with Lee's unique kickstop mechanism. However I know how crazy everyone would get if it was a NeOn with a kickstop :)

The knife has a very reduced tab size compared to the ones you would traditionally see on Lee Williams' knives and because of that I feel the flipping motion is definitely different than what you would see on a regular Shirogorov knife, I find myself using a similar opening method to how I would open the Pero. It can be quite rough on the finger if you don't open it properly...

mikomonday: The blue lanyard I made would look sweet on that knife. If your interested send me your info and I'll mail it out to you. (totally free of course)
