The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

My F95 arrived today, along with the break down tool.

There was some discussion of mirror polished blades on another Shiro board, so I added this one and thought I'd show it off here. It is a pretty standard F3 in Carbon Fiber. But what makes it special is the mirror polished ZDP 189 blade.

I notice that some folks here manage to post full size images. Anyone doing that care to share the secret? I've been trying without success.

Hi Rick. Welcome to the Bears' Den. I've been pretty busy lately and not on the forums much and am happy to see some new "faces" here along with a couple pages worth of activity.

You've got some sweet Shiros there that certainly deserve full-sized images. The way to achieve that is to use a photo-sharing service like Photobucket, Flickr, or the one I use--Imgur. Open a free account and upload your images. There are editing tools there--you'll need to down-size your pics to 900-1000 resolution in the larger dimension to fit the page--and you can crop, enhance, etc. When you're ready to post, find the links page and find the BB code (for message boards and forums), copy that, and paste it into your post.

It took me a while to get the hang of it, but it works great and will give us a chance for a better look at those great Shiros of yours. That last F3 you posted is exceptional!

Love my Thorburns but the Shiro's seem to always win out.
Also has anyone tried to sharpen Vanax 37 ? If so how was it and any pointers?

Really like that F3, PM. There've been a couple others of those posted here, and they really are just extraordinarily handsome. The all-Ti F series knives are amazing. I put something else in my pocket yesterday for the first time since I got my 95T. I'm handling my other knives and did just buy large 21 Seb Insingo Micarta, but when I walk out the door that Turtle just climbs back into the right front of my jeans.

You got pics of your new F95? I love my turtle also I need to carry it more. Flips and feels amazing. The only thing I would change on my turtle would be to give it the shiro style back strap.

You asked, so I just shot these, CJW. I posted a couple a few pages back when I first got this baby, but these are a little sharper. All that clutter on the board is the schedule for the youth basketball league I run. That's where I've been for the last couple weeks--buried in this thing for 693 games, for 99 teams, from 18 clubs. Got about 1200 kids playing for us. Schedule's almost done, but is enough to make me wary of having sharp objects around for fear of opening a vein in desperation.

Anyway, I know what you mean about the backstrap, but I really love the open construction of the knife and wouldn't want to give that up. The lanyard's a little funny coming off the side like it does, but it's a small thing to live with for such an incredible knife. Only thing I've carried since I got it was my Sebenza 25 yesterday.

BTW, I cut a ton of cardboard with it a week or so ago and touched it up on the SharpMaker. The factory angle was just perfect for it and it's even sharper now than when I got it. Like a lazuh....

That's awesome you are doing that for the kids. Do you have kids of your own? I got two girls in basketball right now and they go to my Ex for all the basketball advice lol. I myself was more wrestling, boxing, and baseball. I help coach my son in wrestling when I can. But that's about it for me as far as coaching.
That 95T looks great!! I need to get a lanyard on mine. Has your bead on there scratched it at all.

We started the league and our club 17 seasons ago. My youngest son was on our first 6th grade team. He's now in his 4th season coaching in our club and in his third season coaching at our high school, second as Freshman Boys Coach. What goes around comes around, for sure, and I'm pretty proud of him. He's a knife guy, too.

I have lanyards on lots of my knives, most of my frequent carries, and all four Shiros, with beads on all the latter and many others. I've had no problems with scratches. I think all my beads are ti so maybe that helps. I usually carry with the lanyards out anyway and am careful if I tuck them in if I need to be a bit more discrete.

I bet you are one proud dad. One of the best things in life is seeing your kids do good and succeed. My son and one of my daughters are all about the knives like their dad also. It's pretty cute.
Yea I don't have any lanyard on my shiro's but think I am gonna go with one for my Neon.

Here's one of my odd ball Shiro... probably early version of the NF1 on the 95 before they gone on to make the flipperless version in F3

So here's one for y'all--my beloved F3 Python has developed lock-stick. I'm the third owner and the knife was damn near LNIB when I got it. It's had some carry and use by me and has been touched up on the SharpMaker, but mostly it's been played with and opened and closed A LOT.

What I thought at first was that the lock-bar insert had come a little loose. My 95T has a torx screw screw holding its insert in, so I assumed the same for the Python, not being able to see the back of the bar in a liner-lock. I figured it was a good time to suck it up and disassemble a Shiro for the first time, so I got out my 1-cent take-down tool and plunged in.

The short story is that there's no screw, the insert seems press-fit in place, and doesn't appear loose or to have shifted. I gotta say that dealing with those dozens of tiny ball-bearings was not a lot of fun. It took several attempts at keeping the ring-retainers and bearings in place before coming to a proper order of operations for re-assembly. It also took quite a lot of effort to re-install the back post, as the tolerance there is extremely tight and it took loosening the pivot as much as I dared, lubing the back post, and some light mallet work to get it back in place.

With everything tightened back down the knife comes right back to smooth action and dead-balls centering. The lock-stick is about the same. What I'm thinking is that all my opening/closings have advanced the break-in to this undesirable point. I can see a bit of a wear mark on the blade tang. Pencil "lead" applied there doesn't really help, but does illustrate the extent of the lock-up. The knife has the earliest of my three similarly-locking Shiros and is really too early for my taste, to the extent that if I open the knife without the flipper the lock barely engages and will slip.

I'm thinking that I'll keep opening/closing the knife and it will continue to break in and perhaps pass this sticking-point--indeed a double entendre. Barring that, I would consider taking down the lock-bar and insert just a smidgen with a diamond stone (which would yield a little more lock-up) or perhaps lightly radiusing the edge of the insert. I know that I have to be careful not to angle the lock-bar face as pitching it leads to slippage.

Let me know if any of you have had similar experiences or any thoughts on my issue. I don't like my Python any less for this--he's just a sick pet that needs to be nursed back to health.
