The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

The last couple years, Rufus1949 Rufus1949 , shipping direct to US customers from Russia has been pretty slow. It's generally taken the better part of a week for my Russian Post packages from Pavlovo (Cheburkov and Biryukov) to mosey along to clear Customs just north of Moscow in Khimki and then even EMS can sit in a black hole at Sheremetyevo Airport for 2-3 weeks. For your sake, I certainly hope things have changed for the better and your time estimate plays out as you expect.

For my part, today was a Tabargan Tuesday with my old school 100NS in G10 and 440C. Back in its day, that model feature two lines--one more modest like my present knife and another featuring contoured scales, higher-end steels, and upgraded detailing. Some years later, Shirogorov now offers two tiers of versions in F3's, F95's, and 111's.

I'm hoping nothing has changed. DHL just changed delivery date to Friday from next Monday.

I’ve been trying to make a purchase from Rusblades for the past two days but my credit card company is blocking purchases from Russia.

Call the credit card company, maybe it’s a fraud protection mechanism

Give card company a call and they will lift it when you tell them it's you. They will confirm amount then put it through.
I had same problem...somehow card rep stayed on line with me as I reordered. They said this would be a single approval situation.
Good luck.

Lol. I'd probably only shop there if there was a discontinued model I simple HAD to have.
You'd probably still feel dirty after you'd blown your, er, cash. 😧

I'm glad that we have finally have a BF-supporting, Shirogorov-authorized dealer in Knifecenter. I've been very pleased with them for a few years and bought my Ursus NL there. They've got super fast shipping and you basically get 10% back in rewards for future purchases. 😀

Compared to other Shiros how would you rate the Ursus?
That's not the easiest question to answer. The difference from one model to the next, or from a more basic tier of one model to the next higher, is never a matter of quality--it's defined by features, materials, detailing, and additional milling.

I've not handled a Gen 1 serial production Quantum, but I imagine the difference between that knife and the Ursus is similar to that between an F95R and the original F95NL. I own one of the former and had the NL World Tour knife to play with for three weeks back in 2019. The F95NL had a more basic, unadorned feel to it with SRBS instead of MRBS, no internal milling, and a "lesser" steel in Elmax as opposed to the Vanax 37 of my F95R.

That said, aside from possible lateral strength issues, the main difference between the two pivot systems is that SRBS tends to be snappier and freer than MRBS, which is certainly smoother. I like them both for what they are. My older F95 Turtle was the standard serial production version before the R series and the introduction of the more basic tier, is SRBS, without internal milling, but is M390, and I like it no less than my aforementioned F95R. It's in no way of lesser quality, just a bit less "advanced".

Anyway, the Ursus does have a bit of a more basic feel to it than say my Gen 2 111, the F95R, certainly my RDD, and even my older Turtle and SRBS F3 Python. It's not dissimilar in feel to my NeOn UL (open back, S30V) and, again the F95NL that I had the use of for a few weeks. Still, it has that Shiro quality which is not duplicated much elsewhere and gives you a knife from the SBW that prices in the same ballpark as an inlayed CRK.

I've had some recent discussion with Chuck_Nunface Chuck_Nunface --who has a G10 F3 and now the Merlot F95NL--about our growing admiration, possibly even a preference, for these more basic Shiro models as they're excellent working knives at about half the cost of the upper tier of the same serial production models. I really like my Quantum Ursus NL, am super glad I pulled the trigger on it, and am having trouble putting it down.

And since it didn't happen without pics...

Thanks so much for taking the time for such an indepth explanation. The Ursus has now become a more realistic venture into the world of Shiros for me to explore.

Maybe circumstances are not on our side, but I really like the design of the Ursus and would love to see it with a different inlay material. I have no knowledge of how Shiro patterns, develops, and drops their model configurations so I am blindly waiting for nice carbon fiber or micarta inlays.

And to hop on the bandwagon, I love my G10 F3. It is one of my most carried knives. The SRB produce a firm, yet light and snappy action.

There was an Ursus NL customized by Foster with a glow in the dark inlay that looked pretty sweet. First time I really thought about picking one up to send it off to someone for a cool custom inlay - similar to the F95 Anniversary models that get Timascus/Mokume custom inlays from modders.
