The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Why is zirconium celebrated as a materials choice for knives?

For example, titanium is a great choice because it's light, strong (Rockwell ~35 - 40), has great corrosion resistance, and is hypoallergenic (low nickel content ~.03%).

I’m really really eyeballing that Shiro Hati CF Gen3. But I have a sneaky suspicion that since it’s based on the F95 they will be dropping a new F95 Gen2 with the captured pivot. But Damn, that Hati CF Gen3 only weighs 3.9oz 😮 that’s crazy on the money for the OZ to blade length!

Beowolf Agate Beowolf Agate what are your thoughts on that Hati Gen3. Does it really live up to the hype?? Would you take the Hati Gen3 over the Quantum Gen2? Thanks 🤙

Anyone else who owns the Hati Gen3 is more than welcome to chime in too.

Mr.sig239 Mr.sig239 What do you think of the Ursus NL? I have heard such mixed reviews I became disinterested. Seems like a decent deal, but owning a Gen2 Quantum I don’t feel the need to pick one up unless there is more to it. Thanks 🤙
It's a nice knife. Fit and finish are great! People just starting out in the Shiro world would do well to pick one up.
It no way in hell compares to my Quantum or F4ns. It feels more like my 95's.

Had the blue 95 apart today to give it a little cleaning and love. Has anyone else ever seen this type of washer setup in a Shiro? I was going to try a roller setup in there but the washers were to thick.

Mr.sig239 Mr.sig239 what you have in your fingers is the Bearing race that holds the ceramic bearings. Unfortunately with these pre 2014 F95 they have the tapered bearing race instead of flat and they have the channel in the Ti for the bearing to run in. No way to do SRRBS on these. The Only ones you can MOD to put the SRRBS in is the MRBS. Hope that makes sense 😆

But these SRBS in your F95 are damn cool and some of the best action you will get! They have great opening action with that perfect blend of drop shut but with a little hydraulic action and that self close when it sucks in!

Well I have both the Hati Gen3 and the Quantum Gen2 and they're both beautiful knives, and I wouldn't choose one over the other. They each have different handles (CF vs milled Ti) and blade shapes, so they are just...different. Buy both if you can would be my recommendation. Probably not what you wanted to hear, lol. Good luck!

Is either the blade or the handle milled to match the washer’s angle or does it just sit that space exposed? Could it be an early version of the washers they use for bearings?
Blade and scales are both flat bottomed.
I tried the washers both ways. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I put the flats against the scales in the end as I figured less friction on the blade this way.

Hati Gen3 "captured pivot" - What is the practical advantage of this? Sergei says below on his IG that this prevents the pivot from spinning. Is this a real issue, or a solution in search of a problem?

If you use thread locker, especially the stronger Blue type, a spinning pivot would likely require you heat it over the stove

Good. So ease of disassembly. Makes sense. So one can now use a screwdriver on the recessed pivot screw, and the opposite screw will not turn. Always scrstched my head about my other Shiros having one recessed and one non-recessed pivot screw, which was always (to me) difficult to secure.

My Shiro/RJM Soft Overkills have the captive pivot and they still turn some but they hit a ”stop” after about a 1/4 turn so there’s a little rotation but it’s minor for sure. I haven’t taken the knife apart though to see exactly how the pieces are set in there or what makes it catch though.

I think that once you get above titanium (pricewise) the other available materials are just for looks. ie: Timascus, zirconium, mokume etc... Zirc doesn't look particularly beautiful to me compared to some of the other metallic materials, but then again I've never handled it.

Oil-slick Zirconium is some pretty special stuff - different makers can finish it to a different degree

Seems like Zirconium is more for aesthetics than practicality where titanium for the handles or S125V, ZDP-189, etc. for the blades are chosen for their performance characteristics.

Alright Peeps…. here ya go! Some side by side on the Shiro Hati Gen3 and Quantum Gen2. As much as I love the Quantum Gen2 the Hati Gen3 just kicked it out of my pocket! Hati Gen3 is my New EDC 🤙
